CASSANDRA WAS PETRIFIED.
Flowers. Pretty flowers that grow in the meadow. Sunflowers. Marigolds. Daffodils. Daisies. Carnations.
Sunlight. The way it hit the canoe lake at camp. The way it turned her best friend's eyes into a brilliant gold. The way it made the leaves in the trees turn an emerald color.
But staring into the Furies' eyes, all of her happy thoughts slipped from her mind.
Cassandra had to get them away from Percy. He had a quest to complete. He had to save the world.
"Where is it? Where?" they hissed, lashing their whips. People on the bus screamed, obviously seeing something abnormal.
It. Not him. Which meant...what? Were they searching for the bolt? Impossible. Chiron said Hades had it.
Still, Cassandra kept up with their terminology as she pulled her best terrified face (which wasn't difficult all things considered) and pointed behind them. "Is that it?"
The Furies somehow fell for it and turned completely around to look for it. Cassandra saw a blur of movement and realized that Percy had made a run for it.
Get out of here, she thought, drawing her sword.
The Furies turned back around, knowing they'd been tricked. They raised their whips to attack. Grover and Cassandra cowered, preparing for the worst.
The blow never came.
The bus suddenly swerved into the tunnel wall, the sound of metal scraping filling Cassandra's ears. The Furies were thrown against the windows meanwhile Grover and Cassandra latched onto the seats to prevent themselves from being put into a rather awkward situation with the Furies.
"Hey!" Cassandra heard the bus driver yell. "Hey, kid, stop—woah!"
She peered over the seat and saw none other than Percy yanking on the wheel. Huh.
They sped out of the tunnel and swerved down the road, hitting cars left and right.
Cassandra squeezed her eyes shut and said a silent prayer to the gods. If there was a god of driving, she hoped they'd save them now.
