Mia sat at her dining table, a mug of tea in her hands, staring out the window as the soft hum of the city filtered through her apartment. The golden light of the setting sun bathed her living room in a warm glow, but the unease gnawing at her chest dulled its usual beauty. She knew what she had to do, but the thought of hurting Lucas—or worse, getting hurt herself—made her hesitate.

For days, her mind had been an emotional battleground. Lucas was a good man—ambitious, kind, and passionate. He had been supportive of her creative work, and their shared love for stories had given them a strong connection. But ever since Jake had walked into her life, things had shifted. The barista's easy charm and playful banter made her feel light and carefree, and their conversations always flowed so naturally. She couldn't ignore the magnetic pull she felt toward him, but what scared her was that Lucas had no idea she was grappling with these feelings. He was still under the impression that they were building something deeper together.

Her thoughts spiraled in circles, leaving her restless and uncertain. She needed clarity, and she needed it fast.

That's when she remembered Sarah.

Mia picked up her phone and texted her best friend, Sarah, asking if she could come over. It didn't take long for Sarah to reply, her message quick and to the point: "Be there in 20. You're making dinner."

Mia smiled despite her inner turmoil. Sarah was always direct, and she'd never sugarcoat the truth, no matter how harsh it might be. She was exactly the person Mia needed right now.
