Mia hadn't seen Lucas in weeks. After the awkward and emotional breakup, the two had gone their separate ways, each needing space to figure out where they stood. It wasn't an easy process for either of them. For Mia, her growing relationship with Jake had kept her distracted, but Lucas lingered at the back of her mind. They had shared so much, and she hated the thought of losing him entirely, especially considering how well they had connected over art and storytelling.
As she sat in Brewed Awakening one rainy afternoon, her thoughts inevitably drifted back to Lucas. She missed his dry humor, the way he could make her laugh with just a quip, and their deep conversations about books, stories, and their creative ambitions. Their relationship had started with an unexpected coffee spill, but it had quickly blossomed into something more meaningful—until the romantic layer had complicated everything. Now, Mia was determined to salvage the parts of their bond that had been untouched by the messiness of love and heartbreak.
She pulled out her phone, staring at Lucas's name in her contacts. Her thumb hovered over the screen, uncertainty washing over her. Would he even want to hear from her? Was it too soon? Or worse, had they drifted so far apart that any attempt at rekindling their friendship would feel forced or unnatural?
After a few moments of internal debate, Mia decided to take a chance. She typed out a simple message.
Mia: "Hey, Lucas. It's been a while. I was wondering if you'd want to catch up sometime. I miss our chats."
She hit send before she could second-guess herself, her stomach twisting with nervous anticipation. She didn't expect an immediate response, but only a few minutes later, her phone buzzed.
Lucas: "Hey, Mia. I've been meaning to reach out, too. Yeah, let's meet up. Brewed Awakening tomorrow? Usual time?"
Mia's heart leaped in her chest. Relief, excitement, and a little anxiety mixed together as she replied.
Mia: "Sounds perfect. See you then."
The next day, Mia arrived at the café with a mix of emotions swirling inside her. She knew things wouldn't go back to the way they were before—they couldn't. Too much had changed between them, but maybe, just maybe, they could find some common ground and rebuild their friendship on new terms.
Lucas arrived a few minutes later, his usual confident stride tempered by something more reserved. He smiled when he saw her, though, and that was enough to set Mia at ease. They exchanged a quick hug, and for a moment, Mia felt the familiar warmth of his presence. It wasn't the electric pull she had once felt, but rather something softer, like a favorite sweater you wear on a cold day.
They both sat down, and after ordering their drinks, there was a brief but noticeable pause.
"So," Lucas said, breaking the silence. "How have you been?"
Mia let out a small laugh. "I've been good, actually. Busy with work, trying to keep up with this new graphic novel project."
"I saw some of your sketches on Instagram," Lucas said with a nod. "They look amazing. You've always been really talented."
Mia smiled at the compliment, a sense of gratitude swelling inside her. "Thanks. I'm finally starting to feel like I'm getting somewhere with it."
"What about you?" Mia asked, her curiosity piqued. "How's the writing going?"
Lucas leaned back in his chair, his expression thoughtful. "It's been... up and down, to be honest. I've had some good days, but also a lot of writer's block. I think I've been too in my head lately."
Mia nodded, understanding the sentiment all too well. "I get that. Sometimes, when there's too much going on, it's hard to focus on being creative."
Lucas's eyes flickered with something deeper, a hint of the emotional baggage he had been carrying since their breakup. "Yeah, I guess you could say that," he admitted. "After everything that happened with us, I needed to take a step back and figure out where I was headed."
Mia lowered her gaze, guilt tugging at her. "I'm sorry, Lucas. I know things didn't end the way either of us expected. But I've been thinking a lot about it, and I don't want to lose you as a friend. I know it's complicated, but I really do miss you."
Lucas looked at her, his expression softening. "I miss you too, Mia. And I agree—things are different now, but that doesn't mean we can't be friends. I've had some time to think, and I'm okay with how things turned out. I mean, I won't lie and say it didn't hurt at first, but... I don't want to let that get in the way of something good."
A wave of relief washed over Mia. It was as if a weight had been lifted from her shoulders. "I'm glad you feel that way," she said quietly. "I know we can't go back to what we were before, but I think we can start fresh—without all the romantic tension."
Lucas chuckled, nodding in agreement. "Yeah, I think that's a good idea."
Their conversation flowed more naturally after that, like a dam had broken and the water could finally run free. They talked about everything—art, books, their favorite movies, and even the latest news in the world of indie publishing. It felt like old times, but with a new layer of honesty and understanding between them.
As the afternoon sun filtered through the café's windows, casting a warm glow over their table, Mia realized something important: Lucas had been a big part of her life, and while the nature of their relationship had changed, it didn't mean they couldn't still care for each other in meaningful ways.
They had both grown from the experience, and now they were ready to rebuild something new—a friendship that could stand on its own
