The next morning, Elena woke up with a strange sense of anticipation, her mind still tangled in the events of the night before. For a brief, fleeting moment, she wondered if it had all been a dream. But then she touched her lips, and the memory of Ivy's kiss came rushing back with vivid clarity.

She groaned, burying her face in the pillow. What was she supposed to do now? How could she just go back to pretending everything was the same?

But she had promised Ivy. Pretend everything was normal. She wasn't sure if Ivy actually believed that was possible or if she was just as scared of the truth as Elena was.

After dragging herself out of bed, Elena dressed slowly, her mind still whirling. She'd see Ivy soon—probably in their usual study spot at the library or on campus somewhere—and the thought both thrilled and terrified her. She wasn't sure if she could act like nothing had changed, but she had to try. At least for Ivy's sake.

By the time she left her dorm and headed toward campus, the sun was already high in the sky, and students were bustling about, caught up in the rush of midterms. Elena felt like she was walking through a fog, barely noticing the chatter and noise around her. Her mind was too focused on what would happen when she saw Ivy again.

As she approached the library, her phone buzzed with a text. She glanced down and saw Ivy's name on the screen.

*Library. Same table. See you soon?*

Elena's heart gave a little jump, and she paused, taking a steadying breath before typing back a quick *on my way*. Her hands felt shaky as she shoved the phone into her bag, her legs carrying her automatically toward the familiar spot where they always met.

When she pushed open the library door, her eyes immediately sought out Ivy. She spotted her in the back corner, head bent over a textbook, hair tumbling in messy waves over her shoulder. She looked so much like she always did—focused, determined, her brow furrowed in concentration. And yet, something was different now. The kiss had changed everything.

Elena approached the table slowly, unsure of how to act. When Ivy looked up and saw her, she smiled—an easy, familiar smile that made Elena's heart twist. It was like they were back to their usual routine, but with an invisible thread of tension woven between them.

"Hey," Ivy said, her voice light, as if nothing monumental had passed between them last night.

"Hey," Elena echoed, sliding into the chair across from her. She could feel the weight of Ivy's eyes on her, but she kept her own gaze on her bag as she fished out her laptop.

They worked in silence for a while, the only sounds between them the soft tapping of keys and the rustling of papers. But the quiet was suffocating, thick with all the things neither of them was saying. Elena's mind kept drifting back to the kiss, replaying it over and over again, wondering if Ivy was thinking about it too.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Ivy broke the silence.

"How's your essay going?"

Elena blinked, snapping back to the present. "Oh, um... it's fine. Just trying to finish the last section."

Ivy nodded, but there was a strange tightness in her expression, as if she was forcing herself to stay casual. The tension between them was palpable now, stretching thin and taut, ready to snap at any moment.

"Ivy," Elena blurted out before she could stop herself. "About last night..."

Ivy's eyes widened slightly, and for a second, she looked like she might bolt. But then she took a deep breath and nodded. "Yeah. I've been thinking about it too."

Elena felt a strange mixture of relief and dread. She wasn't sure if she was ready for this conversation, but she also knew they couldn't keep pretending forever. "I don't know what to say. I just... I don't want things to get weird between us."

"They're already weird," Ivy said softly, a hint of a smile tugging at the corner of her lips. "But I don't want to lose you, Elena. I can't."

"You won't lose me," Elena said quickly, leaning forward, her voice urgent. "I don't want that either. But I also don't know how to just... go back to how things were."

Ivy bit her lip, her eyes flicking away for a moment. "Maybe we don't have to."

Elena's heart skipped a beat. "What do you mean?"

"I mean, maybe we don't have to pretend everything's the same. Maybe we figure this out together—whatever *this* is."

Elena stared at her, the weight of Ivy's words sinking in. Ivy was scared too, but she was willing to take the leap. And in that moment, Elena realized she was too.

"Okay," Elena said, her voice steadying. "We'll figure it out. Together."

Ivy's smile this time was real, warm and bright, and for the first time since that kiss, Elena felt a little lighter. The tension between them didn't disappear completely, but something had shifted again—this time in a way that felt less terrifying and more hopeful.

They went back to studying, the quiet between them no longer suffocating, but filled with something new. Something that felt like the beginning of whatever was coming next.
