The decision to "figure it out together" had seemed so clear in the bar that night. Elena had walked home with Ivy, the world around them quiet except for their footsteps on the pavement. They had held hands the whole way back, and for the first time in weeks, everything felt steady between them. But as the days passed, things weren't as simple as they'd hoped.
For one, they still hadn't defined anything.
They saw each other almost daily, falling back into their usual routines—studying together, grabbing late-night coffee, lounging on Ivy's bed as the hours slipped away. But the ambiguity of their relationship began to eat away at Elena. It felt like they were playing a dangerous game, toeing the line between friends and something more, but never quite stepping over it.
One Friday evening, they were sitting in Ivy's dorm, textbooks and notes sprawled across the floor. Ivy was laughing at something on her phone, completely distracted from the work they were supposed to be doing, and Elena couldn't help but smile at her.
"Okay, seriously," Elena said, tossing her pen onto the floor in mock defeat, "how am I supposed to focus when you're not even trying?"
Ivy glanced up, grinning. "I'm multitasking."
"Sure you are."
Ivy leaned back against the bed, still smiling. "Fine. We can take a break."
Elena stretched her legs out and leaned back on her hands, her eyes drifting toward Ivy. The way she was bathed in the warm glow of the desk lamp, the way her eyes crinkled when she smiled—it was all so familiar, so easy. And yet there was always that tension lurking underneath the surface, like an uninvited guest.
"Ivy," Elena began, her voice more serious now.
Ivy's grin faded slightly as she turned to face her. "What's up?"
"We said we'd figure this out, right?" Elena asked, her heart pounding in her chest.
Ivy nodded slowly, sensing the shift in the conversation. "Yeah... we did."
"So, what are we?" Elena finally asked, the question that had been gnawing at her for days spilling out. "Are we just... friends? More than that? I need to know."
Ivy's smile disappeared completely, and she sat up, crossing her legs as she faced Elena. "I don't know," she admitted quietly, her fingers playing nervously with the hem of her shirt. "I've been trying to figure it out too."
Elena felt a wave of frustration rise in her chest. "But we can't just keep pretending like this isn't happening. I can't."
"I'm not pretending," Ivy said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I just... I don't know how to deal with this. You're my best friend, Elena. I don't want to ruin that."
"And you think not talking about this is going to make things better?" Elena's voice came out sharper than she intended.
Ivy winced. "That's not what I meant."
Elena sighed, trying to calm the storm of emotions swirling inside her. "I don't want to push you, Ivy. But I need more than this uncertainty. We've kissed. We've shared things that go beyond friendship, and I just—" she paused, her throat tightening, "—I need to know where I stand."
Ivy looked down at her hands, the silence between them heavy and uncomfortable. Elena waited, her heart pounding as the tension stretched.
"I'm scared," Ivy finally said, her voice barely audible.
"Of what?"
"Of losing you. Of us not working out. Of... everything," Ivy admitted, her eyes flicking up to meet Elena's. "I don't want to ruin this."
Elena's frustration melted at the vulnerability in Ivy's voice, but the uncertainty still gnawed at her. "I don't want to lose you either. But not making a decision doesn't stop that from happening. If anything, it makes it worse."
Ivy was quiet for a moment, her gaze distant. When she finally spoke, her voice was softer. "What if we just... take it slow? Figure it out as we go?"
Elena bit her lip, considering the offer. Part of her wanted a clear answer—something concrete she could hold onto—but another part of her understood Ivy's fear. This was complicated. It wasn't just about their feelings; it was about their friendship, their history. If they rushed in and it all fell apart, what then?
"Okay," Elena said softly, nodding. "We'll take it slow. But no more pretending. We have to talk about things when they come up, even if it's hard."
Ivy gave a small smile, relief washing over her features. "Deal."
The tension between them seemed to ease, and for a moment, Elena felt like they were on the same page again. But even as Ivy smiled and leaned back into the conversation, Elena couldn't shake the feeling that they were still walking on a tightrope. One wrong move, and everything could come crashing down.
The weeks passed, and though they tried to keep things light, cracks began to form. Ivy was pulling away. She wasn't avoiding Elena, exactly, but there was a distance growing between them, like she was keeping something back. The silences grew longer, the touches fewer. Elena noticed, but she didn't want to push. She had promised Ivy they'd take things slow, and she didn't want to break that promise.
But one night, everything came to a head.
They were at a party, surrounded by friends and music. Ivy had drifted off to get a drink, and Elena stood by the window, watching her from afar. She couldn't help but notice how Ivy seemed more at ease when she wasn't around Elena—laughing with friends, talking to strangers. It stung more than she wanted to admit.
As the night wore on, Elena's chest tightened with the growing realization that maybe, just maybe, Ivy wasn't as all in as she'd promised.
And when Elena saw Ivy talking to a girl she didn't recognize, the same easy smile on her face, the distance between them felt unbearable.
Elena turned away, the noise of the party fading into the background. For the first time since their kiss, Elena wondered if they had made a mistake. If taking it slow was only dragging out the inevitable.
Maybe things were already falling apart, and neither of them wanted to admit it.
