Mailin’s POV

The early morning light filters softly through the windows as I sit on the edge of the bed, carefully removing the last of Shota’s bandages. His skin, still marked by bruises, has healed considerably since the USJ incident. As I peel away the final strip of gauze, my fingers linger for a moment longer than necessary, brushing over the now bare skin of his cheek.

“You’re almost back to normal,” I say softly, trying to lighten the mood. But the tightness in my chest tells me that normal doesn’t mean things will stay the same between us.

Shota’s dark eyes meet mine, a flicker of something unreadable in their depths. “You don’t need to fuss over me anymore,” he mutters, leaning back slightly as if trying to put distance between us.

I force a smile, nodding as I stand. “You’re right. I guess my job here is done.”

My hands move to the bag on the floor, slowly gathering up the few things I’d brought with me during the time I was taking care of him. Clothes, a few personal items—nothing that should make this feel so hard. But the weight in my chest is almost unbearable as I pack, knowing that once I’m done, I’ll have to leave.

Shota’s injuries have healed. He doesn’t need me to care for him anymore. That’s what I came for, right? To help him recover. But now... now it feels like I’m packing away more than just my things. It feels like I’m walking away from something important.

Just as I zip up the bag, I hear his voice from behind me.

“What are you doing?”

I freeze, my heart pounding in my chest. His voice is low, but there’s something in it that makes me stop. Slowly, I turn to face him, forcing a lightness into my voice that doesn’t quite reach my eyes.

“You’re better now,” I say, trying to sound casual. “You don’t need me to take care of you anymore.”

Shota’s eyes narrow slightly, a frown tugging at his lips as he stands from the bed, stepping closer to me. “So you’re leaving?”

There’s a weight in his words that catches me off guard, and I can’t find the right response. Instead, I look away, trying to busy myself with the task of zipping up my bag. But before I can finish, his hand is on mine, stopping me.

“Don’t.”

It’s a single word, but it’s enough to make my heart skip a beat. Slowly, I look up at him, my breath catching in my throat as our eyes meet. His hand is warm against mine, and for a moment, everything else fades away. The room, the bag, the distance I thought was there—it all disappears in the space between us.

“Shota...”

His gaze doesn’t waver, and his hand tightens just slightly over mine. “I don’t want you to leave, Mailin.”

My heart hammers in my chest as his words sink in. He’s always been so reserved, so careful with his emotions. But now, standing here, there’s something raw and vulnerable in his eyes, something I wasn’t expecting to see.

“I...” I start, but my voice falters as the reality of the moment hits me. I thought we were just... dating. Casual. But this—this feels like more.

Before I can say anything else, Shota steps closer, his hand moving to cup my cheek, his thumb brushing gently across my skin. The touch sends a shiver through me, and I lean into it, my eyes fluttering shut for a brief moment.

“I love you,” he says softly, his voice barely more than a whisper, but the weight of the words crashes over me like a tidal wave.

I open my eyes, staring up at him in disbelief. “You... what?”

Shota’s expression softens, and he lets out a small, almost exasperated sigh. “I’ve loved you for a long time, Mailin. I just... didn’t know how to say it.”

The tears well up before I can stop them, and I blink rapidly, trying to keep my emotions in check. “Shota, I...”

But before I can finish, he pulls me against him, his arms wrapping around me tightly. His chin rests on top of my head, and for the first time in a long while, I feel like I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.

“I love you too,” I whisper into his chest, my voice thick with emotion. The words tumble out before I can even process them, but they feel right. They feel true.

Shota pulls back just enough to tilt my face up toward his, his dark eyes searching mine. Then, without a word, he leans down, pressing his lips to mine in a kiss that’s soft, tender, and filled with everything we’ve been holding back.

Shota’s POV

The words come out before I even fully realize what I’m saying, but once they’re spoken, there’s no taking them back. And honestly, I don’t want to.

“I love you.”

I’ve known it for a while now, buried it under layers of responsibility and fear. But seeing her pack up her things—seeing her get ready to leave—it broke something inside me. I couldn’t let her go. Not like that.

When she says it back, when she says she loves me too, I feel something unclench in my chest. The tension, the worry—it all fades away, replaced by a warmth I haven’t felt in years.

I kiss her, and it feels like everything finally falls into place.

As we pull apart, I brush a thumb over her cheek, wiping away the tear that escaped. “You’re staying,” I say, not as a question but as a statement. I need her to stay.

Mailin smiles, the kind of smile that lights up her entire face, and she nods. “I’m staying.”

I feel a weight lift off my shoulders, and for the first time in what feels like forever, I let myself relax. She’s here, and she’s not going anywhere.
