Two weeks after that meeting, it took some adjusting but eventually, everyone got sorted into their new squad assignments. Room assignments didn't change much, much to the relief of everyone. What did change were the locker assignments, which were annoying depending on how much stuff you had (Mike had the most shit in his, watched him nearly throw out his back.) Four squads were established after the meeting: Wolfguard, Red Hammer, Viper Strike, and Ghosteyes.
First up, Wolfguard – the humanitarians and mainly non-lethal gadgets. Collateral damage was not an option for them. Their also the poster children for Rainbow when it came to press and politicians. As expected, Gustave 'Doc' Kateb is in charge.
On the opposite end of the scale was Red Hammer, when casualties are all but guaranteed. High risk calvary unit for breaches and high-intensity raids. If you want a firefight, don't pick one against them. Jordan 'Thermite' Trace leads these guys.
Viperstrike was the clean cut by the book operators. Like a fucking scalpel with how precise they were, these guys are the first choice for what Rainbow does. They maintain the original order of the organization. Led by Yumiko 'Hibana' Imagawa.
Then there was the squad I was a part of, Ghosteyes, the shadows of Rainbow Six. Stealth and intelligence operations were our specialty. We do the work that no one else wants to do, hiding in the shadows and erasing the line in the sand. The things we know usually reach us before anyone in a seat of power. We are led by Taina 'Caviera' Pereira, its not as bad as you think I swear.
I looked around the locker room, it was dark and lit only by the table in the middle. Files upon files of evidence and targets rested on it, partially translucent from the light. A peg board on one of the walls held the heavy-duty gadgets and tools, cage lockers with our callsigns on one side of the room: Taina "Caveira" Pereira, Timur "Glaz" Glazkov, Meghan "Valkyrie" Castellano, Chul Kyung "Vigil" Hwa, Zofia Bosak, Liu Tze "Lesion" Long, "Nøkk", Collinn "Warden" McKinley, Erik "Maverick" Thorn, Max "Mozzie" Goose, Nienke "Iana" Meijer, "Zero", "Flores" Lucero, and at the end was "ETA-10".
"Hey, does it always need to be this gloomy in here or can we turn on the lights?" Max voiced my thoughts exactly, this much darkness can't be good for the human mind. "I get we're the stealth infil yada yada, but don't you think we're playing it up a bit much?"
"Just five more minutes and the lights will go back on, we need to break down the intel that Wolfguard got us," Meghan explained, spilling the contents of one folder onto the table. Inside was information and schematics of a Nighthaven facility. "We were able to get some information on where they store most of their data, bad news it can't be hacked externally otherwise Dokkebei would've already been on that. Before Taina left for South America, she issued that Nokk would be the one to infiltrate Nighthaven. Though Wolfguard requested that one of theirs, Sens, would join Nokk on this just to make sure the VIP extracts safely."
I raised my hand, "And what about exfil? Are the rest of us gonna be on standby or is there a time."
"Good question," She nodded, sliding over a map of the area. "The facility is on the coast so she'll exfill via boat once the data is collected. It will be there around 0100, you and Sam will make sure of that."
"Me?" I chuckled. "Thought this was gonna be an in and out mission."
"If things get too heated you'll make your way inside and assist Nokk in the escape. You two seem to work well together, so I assume nothing will be a problem," She dangled the boat keys in front of me. "Right?"
"Yes ma'am." I took the keys and pocketed them in my vest. After the briefing, those who weren't involved with the operation went off to their own business. Sam held out his hand to me, to which I understood immediately, with a roll of eye I handed over the keys to him before he left the room. Looking around it was just me and Nokk left in the room, she was looking over the information. The light makes her silhouette underneath the veil a bit more visible. "Hey, how're you holding up?"
I leaned against the table opposite of her. "I'm doing fine, could be a lot better though." She remarked with a slight chuckle.
"Was that a laugh?" I smirk, pointing her out. "So you do have a sense of humor!"
"I do have a sense of humor, you're just not funny." Her head tilted up slightly to look at me, setting down the files and leaning across the table toward me. "Maybe you can work on it until our date."
"You wound me, but for you, I'll make the exception," I smile, inching my hand toward hers. "You got a day in mind or are you just gonna keep me on a leash?"
She took my hand and raised it to her lips, removing my glove before kissing my knuckles. Imprints from her lipstick stained my skin with every kiss. "You on a leash...Is a thought I quite like Ethan."
"I...uh," Yeah I got nothing.
"After the mission, we'll head up to my place and maybe I can show you around the country." She offered, letting go of my hand and picking up the evidence. "Does that work for you, Smuk?"
I stumbled on my words, leaning against the table to keep my cool. "Yeah– Yeah! Totally, I would love to."
"It's a date then, see you around, Ethan," She waved as she left the room. Leaving me to myself and the humm of the LED table. Oh boy Ethan, you sure did it this time.
I saw her off that morning, helping her load in equipment and getting to meet Wolfguard's newest member 'SENS' in person. Pretty nice person, with great tastes in music. Alongside them was the VIP, the architect for Nighthaven. He would get them through the doors without confrontation. Giving her a wave as the helicopter took off, a fake version of Nighthaven's insignia was spraypainted on the side.
