Only one day left until they'll be in Hogwarts.
Remus and Colette are getting along even better now that she knows of his lycanthropy. She's grown to be a fan of her werwolf brother. The past few days, ever since she found out, she hasn't stopped talking to him about it. Remus likes talking to her about it, with her, he feels so normal. Like being a werwolf is no different from being a wizard, and for her it's not. She has even told him that she thinks being a wizard and a werwolf is cool. Remus thought it was anything but. At least she's not afraid of him, he'd told himself.
They are in their room, packing their luggage. Colettes was almost empty compared to Remus's. He had a Gryffindor emblem printed on his trunk, and it was filled with stuff like Gryffindor scarfs and socks, photo's of him and his friends and a lot of chocolate.
Hers had no emblem on it, yet. And it was filled with nothing but what she was required to bring.
'Are those your friends?' she asked, pointing to the photos with her chin.
'Yeah, James, Sirius and Peter.' he smiled looking at the photos before closing his trunk and sitting down on his bed, facing Colette.
'All Gryffindors?'
'Yeah, we even share a dorm room.'
A smile tugged at her lips as she listened to his answer.
'You'll love it there, trust me.' he says.
'I hope so.'
She trust in his judgement, but it doesn't take the fear off her shoulders of being alone.
'You know, I'll always be there, even if we aren't in the same house.' he assured her. They went to sleep and got woken up early in the morning. The train wasn't leaving the station until 12pm, but the Lupins wanted to be early.
Kings Cross felt magical, although the only magical thing about it was the fact that they ran through a wall to get to the station 9 3/4. The train hasn't arrived yet, but a lot of wizards and their family were already there, waiting. Colette, next to Remus, seemed to be overwhelmed.
He turned to her, weary of her.
'Are you nervous?' he asked.
'No... only a little bit.' she answered with sarcasm.
He chuckles at her respond and shakes his head. 'It's okay, I think I might've been even worse than you.'
Their conversation was broken up as their gazes fell upon a family with two black haired boys.
One of them was wearing a Gryffindor tie, the other one was unsorted like her. She recognized the older one, he was on one of Remus's photos.
'Friend of yours?' she asked.
'Yeah, Sirius. The Blacks are one of the most influential pureblood family's, they're not exactly proud that Sirius is a Gryffindor.'
'Why's that?'
'Because the Blacks are a Slytherin Family, Orion and Walburga Black, his parents, are both Slytherins. So are his three elder cousins. He is the only Gryffindor.' he explains.
'And why is that a bad thing? Isn't it like totally insignificant what house you're in?'
'No, a lot of people care a lot about their house. For them it's a little bit complicated though. Gryffindor and Slytherin are rivals, have been for centuries. This rivalry is more or less important to some, but to house Black, it's deeply important.'
He pauses, debating with himself, wether to tell her or not.
'Most students in Slytherin come from blood supremacist family's and are purebloods themselves. They believe that, because of their pure blood status, they're supreme. Gryffindors usually are filled with muggleborn students, to them it's the biggest insult to be one or to be friends with one.' he adds.
She was a muggleborn by blood, halfblood in name. The thought send a shiver down her spine.
Remus has also spotted his other friends, all of them standing on different sides of the station.
The train finally arrives.
'A compartment has only got space for four... but I can get one with you-' he offers.
'Go with your friends, I'll be fine.' she assures him, smiling at his offer.
'You're sure?' he asks hesitantly.
She nods and makes her way to her own compartment. The crossing of the black lake the first years do, was beautiful. The castle, the light and the stars were breathtaking. Colette was amazed, her fear had turned into excitement.
Professor McGonagall is leading the first years over the grand staircase to the great hall. Before entering, she brought the group of students to a halt. She turns to speak to them, making sure to have their undivided attention. She explains the houses and house points to them.
"Your house will be like your family." Family.
The grand brown doors to the great hall open and they walked towards the front, where the teachers are seated. Right to the sorting hat. After looking around the hall for a bit, Colette spotted Remus at Gryffindor table with his friends. His friend Sirius looked like a different person from a few hours earlier at Kings Cross. He's much happier here.
She got ripped from her thoughts as her name was called out. She quickly put herself together and moved up to the chair. The sorting hat was a pointy brown leather hat and he was way heavier than she would've expected. She could see her brothers head having turned in her direction, looking foolishly proud of her.
'Mhhh a rare mind.' the grumpy old hat mutters upon her.
'You are strong and enduring, a good heart too. But oh... I sense that it is not glory you strive for, but for vengeance. You are determined to prove yourself and you will.' he pauses and breathes heavily.
'SLYTHERIN!' he calls out.
The tables started cheering, even Remus at the Gryffindor table. Colette stood up from the wooden stool she has just sat on and watched her unsorted-uniform turn into the Slytherin one. She walks over to Slytherin table, where students have already made space for her. One of them being the boy she has earlier seen at Kings Cross, Sirius's brother. He had been sorted into Slytherin as well. Colette is thinking whether she should speak to him or not, but he looked as if he wouldn't wanna speak to anyone, from what she could perceive, so she choose not to.
Later, the new Slytherins were lead to the common room by their prefect. The Slytherin common room is in the dungeons, under water. It looks pretty dark and cold, but Colette thought the room was brilliant. She scribbled something down in her notebook at bed.
'Can't sleep?' her roommate asked. Colette hadn't even noticed when she had entered the room. The lights were still on so luckily she didn't wake her.
'Uhm no, that's not it. I just wanted to write down some of my thoughts, you know, about crossing the black lake, entering the common room for the first time, stuff like this.' Colette has found her self talking to much before seeing the slightly confused expression on her roommates face.
'I'm Colette, Colette Lupin, by the way.' she added.
'Dorcas Meadows. Lupin, is that right? That does not sound like a Slytherin-ish family name.'
'Yeah, it's not. The rest of my family are Gryffindors. How about you?'
'Oh my family is a mixture of Ravenclaws and Slytherins.' Dorcas suddenly looks far less bored by the conversation than before.
They talked and talked, partially gossiped, until the lights went out and they went to sleep.-
Weeks went by, weeks in which everybody was too busy with schoolwork to meet outside the classroom. But things eventually calmed down and Colette was making her way through the corridors.
'Cole, wait!' a familiar voice called after her. It was Remus.
Cole was the nickname her brother has given her.
Smiling, she turned around and walked towards him.
'Hey.' she greets him with a hug.
Together, they walk outside to the stone circle, where they could speak in peace.
'You look good in your Slytherin getup.' Remus said with a smirk.
'Thank you, you should see our common room, it's breathtaking.'
'I take it you adjusted well then?'
'I did, I mean some of my Housemates are annoying, but else I've grown to love Slytherin.'
'Annoying mhh?'
'Yeah, you know, the usual 'blood-traitor' stuff. But I won't hold long if I let that bother me.'
He nods understanding what she means. It hasn't escaped the students that she was a Lupin, and as such came from a line of so called blood traitors. Other than the fact that her brother was a Gryffindor and they still got along.
'How about you? How have you been doing?' she asks. He seemed tense.
'I haven't got a minute of sleep last night. Sirius is so upset with his brother being sorted into Slytherin that he won't let any of us rest. Have you spoken to him?'
'No, sorry. I've only seem him at class but he keeps his sweet distance from me, like some others. And you haven't fully answered my question yet, how are you?'
'To be honest, I'm not so good. Full moon's this week and it has it visible effects on me.'
'Right... I completely forgot. How are you handling your transformation at Hogwarts? I doubt you could use the basement here.'
Remus points in the distance. 'The whomping willow. Dumbledore has set it up for me so that I can transform without anyone noticing.'
'Cool.'
Remus chuckles at her remark.
'It's good having someone I can talk to about this. You're also the only one thinking any of this is "cool".' he says.
'Don't your friends know?'
'No, and they can't find out. No one here can.'
'Not even a few trusted friends? Are you afraid they'd tell anyone?'
He shakes his head. 'It's not just that. If they find out, they'll think differently of me. It's not even their fault, everyone would. But I... I don't want to lose them.'
