One second, we had been peacefully shopping for more supplies for the ship. The next, we were running for our lives with bounty hunters on our tail. They were firing at us, and I could feel the bolts hissing past my head. I slung the pack that had the kid around so that he was against my chest. Then Mando suddenly turned a corner. I had to slow down a bit to be able to make the sharp turn. I presumed we were looking for a more open place, but all this maker forsaken city had was narrow streets. As this was going through my head, I felt a blaster bolt hit my shoulder. I cried out in pain, then realized that I couldn’t keep running. I had to protect the child though, so I found a small alcove to take shelter in. I slung the pack back over my shoulder so it was on my back again. I took out the blaster that Mando had given me. I fired the blaster a few times, and then tried to fire again. But nothing happened. I tried it again. Once. Twice. Horror slowly took over as I realized that it was jammed. I thought to myself, I have to protect the child. I have to. I realized that Mando was running back towards us, shooting blaster bolts as he ran. I knew that he could still take care of the child even if I died. So with this thought, I darted out from my alcove, simultaneously slinging the child to my front with my back towards the bounty hunters. As I awaited the hot pain of the blaster bolts, I could still hear Mando’s footsteps, and then I was suddenly swung around. Then all I could hear was the pinging of blaster bolts against metal. I opened my eyes and looked up in disbelief. Mando had swung us around so that his back was to the bounty hunters and the child was between us with his arms around us both. “Mando what? Why?!” He shushed me, then I could hear his hands moving behind my back. After a few seconds, I heard the whistling birds and then there was no more blaster fire. I tried to break from his embrace, but he held tight. “Are you alright, cyar’ika? Are you hurt?” I shook my head, then yelled at him, “Why Mando?! Why would you waste whistling birds like that! That was a waste of them, Mando!! You could have pulled the child away from my body and kept running back to the ship! I was fine! You put the child in danger! I was handling it!” I could tell that he was horror stricken. Don’t ask me how I knew, but it radiated from him in waves. “It was not a waste of whistling birds. I still have plenty, plus you were in danger. It was not a waste, cyar’ika. Do not put your life on such a low pedestal.” I shook my head, then replied, “The child would have been fine. You and the child could have escaped. The wellbeing of the child is more important than mine. Get that through your beskar-encased skull, Mando.” I could still feel the heat of his gaze, and even through the helmet I could tell that he was furious. I looked up at his visor trying, and failing, to guess what he was thinking. He squeezed my arms, like he was making sure I was still there. His hand was actually quite close to where my blaster wound was, and I hissed in pain. “Sorry about that.” he mumbled. I shrugged. “Maybe we should head back to the ship before anyone else tries to kill us,” I suggested. He nodded and we headed back to the ship.

I need to determine whether or not I should post the rest of the story, tbh. Let me know if I should.
