Chapter 5: You Reap What You Sow

Alec went out of John's office but didn't go to his brother's instead he went to the garage of the FBI building and went into his car. He made two calls. First, he called William and told him he couldn't meet him because something came up and that they would talk the following day. Then he called his father and told him they needed to talk right away.He drove to his parent's house. He needed to talk to his father and plan a damage control strategy to deal with William's new mess. In the Baldwins' residence, Congressman Alexander and Alec talked for a while. Alec didn't leave out any detail of what he had seen and what John had told him. He told his father that William had the guts to invite him to John's house to celebrate July 4 and he went without knowing that was some other man's house and wife. Neither of them could believe William's behavior. This was, by far, the worst mistake he had made. Unfortunately, if they didn't deal with this problem, all of them will suffer the consequences of William's misconduct. Alec urged his father to pay a visit to William and Amy's house before they move the money from the safe. If anyone knew about this money, it would be a huge scandal that could destroy the family.When they rang the bell, Alec told Amy they went to surprise William. She smiled and invited them in. Mr. Baldwin gave Amy a bottle of wine and asked about the pregnancy. Alec showed her a box but told her not to worry he would take it into the living room so she and William could open it together. Amy felt happy to have her in-laws visit. This was a sign that they were accepting her into the family. Her dream of becoming a member of a prestigious family was coming true. Alec asked her to call William and tell him she had prepared a little celebration and wanted him to come home as early as he could. Amy was thrilled. Little she knew of the drama that was about to unfold in her living room. She offered her in-laws a drink and then excused herself so she could prepare dinner. They both smiled at her. Amy left and Alec wasted no time to find and open the safe with the combination John had given him earlier. When he opened the safe both men looked at its contents in shock. Alec opened the box and took a gym bag from it to put all that money inside it. He needed to use the box as well. Then he carefully placed the bag and box on the coffee table. Both men sat down and waited for William to come. William arrived home an hour after he received the call. Amy who was cooking heard him come and greeted him. They kissed. She then told him to wait for her in the living room, she would soon join him. William headed to the living room where he found his father and brother and saw the bag and box full of money on the coffee table and the open safe. The colors from his face drained. He went pale. He tried to talk but he couldn't say a word. He told Alec that he was under the influence of John. Alec told him to stop talking and sit down. He sat down and lowered his head.Amy said dinner was ready and went to the living room where the three men were sitting in complete silence. Her smile faded. Mr. Baldwin told her to sit down. Alec looked at William, he couldn't hold his anger anymore, and he burst, "You fooled me, little brother! I rooted for your medals and your promotion. You used me! You used Dad! You used your partner! You fooled the FBI!"William tried to speak but Alec gestured him to shut up. "Don't you dare to say a word! Now you will listen to me and you will answer my questions!" Alec yelled. "You brought shame to this family. Today, you embarrassed me in front of my daughter and some federal agents! I had a very interesting talk with your former partner." He looked at William and Amy, "Do you have anything to say?" Amy and William looked at each other. Amy was trembling. Alec went on, "No? Good because I have plenty to say to you two! You had the guts to invite me and my family to celebrate Independence Day in your partner's house, and introduced me to his wife as if she was yours! Not only that. You got his wife pregnant and moved into his house while he was working undercover!"Amy scoffed, "This is my house, too!""Only 12.5%, darling!" Alec corrected her and went on, "You told everyone in the FBI you were working undercover. Disappeared from the office and your family to fake this ops., you took the credit for your partner's work and made him look as if he was collaborating with you instead of doing all the fieldwork alone while you were on 'holidays' with his wife? That only leads to one conclusion, You two have been together all along. Am I wrong?" He paused and looked at them, "Don't dare to lie to me!" They remained in silence. "As I told you, John and I talked and we reached an agreement, I will tell you what we decided in a while, but first, tell me how you got this money!" Alec inquired.William remained silent, his father ordered him, "God damn it, talk!!!" William looked angry, he clenched his hands into fists but didn't say a word."If you don't tell me I will open an internal investigation and I will know how you got this money! But you already know how this will end for you, don't you?" Alec compelled William to talk."OK. I will talk! All of this because of that jerk?" He spat angrily."Be careful, William. You're walking on thin ice!" Alec reproached, "Now start talking. And make sure to convince me or else!" He warned William.Amy held his hand. William finally said, "That's the money from the undercover ops.""Come again!" Alec gave William a murderous look."That's the money for expenses when you go undercover," William explained."Are you fooling me? I used to be a field agent. The money you don't use, you give back and you have to justify every penny you spend, only 15% is considered lost in under-the-counter charges. So tell me William, how can you explain all this money unaccounted for?" Alec was getting impatient.William cleared his throat and said, "After John went undercover the first time, I noticed how little money he spent and how much the FBI offered. With each successful operation, the following tasks got more complicated so the expenses raised. John hated paperwork so I did all the administrative work, he gave me recordings informing me of his work and the receipts and cash transaction details and I filled the reports. The guy never read a single report! Can you believe it? I saw the opportunity and seized it. From the start, he told me he worked alone and that he needed me to do research and watch his back. The FBI thought I was undercover with him on his third or fourth task. In the beginning, on the second task, I told the Chief, that John needed me to be closer. On the third task, I told the chief, we were going undercover together. I just stayed at a friend's house and John called me when he needed anything. I used my share for my expenses and forged the receipts. As I said the task got more complicated and bigger and so did the budget, but John kept spending a few bucks, so I kept the rest and tempered the files to return as little money as possible. I also saw how John got commendations after his second task. I started writing the reports to make me look as if I was the one in charge. I hid my commendations. Our superior never complained because we got excellent results and put many criminals in jail. We solved many cases.""WE?" Alec mocked his brother, "You mean John did! John and only John did! YOUR commendations?" Alec took a breath, looked at his father, and stated, "John and I reached an understanding, here it is. This is not negotiable! You will buy 87.5% of this house and 50% of the SUV. And you won't get to keep this money! I don't want to hear you bother John at work. You will stay away from him. He works with my daughter so I will know if you bother him! Understood?" Then he looked at Amy, "And you, missy. You will sign the divorce papers without asking anything from him." William and Amy looked pissed.He gestured for William and Amy to remain silent, he turned to his father and told him, "Let's go, Dad! If I stay here I will kill these two!" Mr. Baldwin nodded and stood up. Alec grabbed the bag and the box. They left the house. Alec drove his father home. They were silent the whole ride.At five o'clock, John and Duke went to Morgan's lab to tell him that James and his brothers would help him move everything to his guest house that same evening. Morgan said he would be heading home and he could lend a hand. John thanked him. They said goodbye and left.John met Darren outside his apartment building. It was going to be an easy and quick task since all of John's belongings were already boxed, They hurried inside and took all the boxes into John and Darrell's cars. Upon loading both vehicles, John went to the Landlord's to give back the key and get the deposit back. The landlord gave the deposit back but told him he couldn't make a refund for the rent. John couldn't care less. He left the building and they both headed to Morgan's house.At Morgan's James and Owen were carrying John's boxes to the guest house. The men made several trips to the vehicles to get all the boxes. They got them all piled up in a corner of the living room. Later on, John would see what to take to the bedroom and how to arrange the rest. Morgan came and showed John where the sheets for the bed, duvet, and towels were. The house was well equipped so John didn't need to buy anything except for groceries. Morgan told them that he was going to grill something and invited all of them. James told John that his motorbike was still in storage. Darrell and Owen stayed and helped Morgan get dinner ready while James and John headed to the storage facility. John took his Harley out of the storage, returned the key, and got the deposit back. Then he followed James's SUV back to Morgan's. John left his Harley Davidson in the garage and both men went in to join the others who were at the grill. Duke ran to John's side."Are you happy buddy?" John patted Duke's head and the latter wagged his tail in response, "Common, let's go with the others, buddy!"They joined the others at the grill. They had a great evening, they talked, laughed, and enjoyed a good dinner and some beers. Then James and his brothers left. John helped Morgan clear the table and put the dishes in the dishwasher. Morgan told him, "You are a good man you have good friends. In this life, you reap what you sow!" John thanked Morgan for all he did for him. Then they said goodnight. John and Duke went to the guest house. He sat on the sofa and rolled a cigarette. He looked at the boxes and thought that was a task for the weekend. He smoked his cigarette and went to bed.
