It's my birthday today
How quickly the years have passed
It's as if only a moment ago I was beaming up at my parents
Clutching the new doll they'd bought for me with my tiny hands
Her hair a silky blonde
Eyes the purest blue
"I'll treasure her forever" I thought to myself
I don't know where she is now
They threw her away
Told me I was too old to play with her
Too old to love her
It seems cruel
But they taught me a valuable lesson that day
You can love with all your heart
You can treat something with such gentleness
Spend every free second cherishing what you have
And it'll still be ripped away from you
The only permanence in your life is you
Things come and go
Sometimes they're lost
Sometimes they break beyond repair
People come and go
Sometimes they die
Sometimes they choose to leave
But you?
You are your constant
So tonight
I'll light my own singular candle
Whisper a wish only I can hear
And I'll smile to myself
I have me
And that's all I'll truly ever need.
