By this point it had already started getting dark out. Brandy and I walked out to the car, and we started the drive back home. "Well that went well," Brandy said. "Yeah," I responded, "They're an interesting bunch, that's for sure." "Just you wait. You haven't even met everyone yet," she said. I chuckled and went back to looking out the window. "Hey," Brandy said after a couple seconds of silence, "I really appreciate how well you did with everyone, especially Bluey and Bingo. They seem to really like you!" "It's no problem," I said, "They're a lot of fun to be around, though I hope next time includes less nail painting." Brandy laughed and refocused her attention on driving. We soon arrived back home. Brandy parked the car, and we made our way inside. Not seeing much else to do, I went upstairs and into my room. I sat down at my new desk and rummaged through a few of the drawers. Surprisingly there was already some basic supplies there: paper, pencils, etc. I imagine Brandy put them there for when I'd have school work. Anyway, I pulled out one of the pencils and a couple sheets of paper. One of my hobbies that I didn't mention earlier is that I like to draw. Now despite years of practice, I was not good. I could really only copy images from reference materials, and I was pretty much incapable of drawing anything from memory. I also usually didn't draw in my free time. It was really just something I did when I was incredibly bored at school, but for some reason I felt compelled to draw. There was only one problem; I had no idea what to draw. I sat there scratching my head for a little while just trying to figure it out. Suddenly, it came to me, I was going to draw Brandy. Now like I said, I absolutely suck at drawing from memory. But you know what I suck even more at? Drawing dogs. Believe me I'd tried before, but I was pretty much only capable of drawing objects. However, I decided to give it a go anyway. It took more attempts that I care to admit, but I did eventually manage to draw an acceptable picture of Brandy. Don't get me wrong, the drawing was terrible, but it was good by my standards. I put away the supplies, tucking my completed drawing into one of the drawers, and I checked the clock. It was about 9:30 at that point, so I decided I should probably get ready for bed.
I went through my normal nightly routine: cleaning my teeth, washing my face, etc. Once I was finished I crawled into bed. I wasn't exactly feeling tired yet, so I got out my book and decided to read a chapter or two. That turned into 3, which turned into 5, which turned into 7. Before I knew it, an hour had already passed. I heard a quick knock at my door, and Brandy walked in. "Alright Oscar," she said, "It's time for bed. Is there anything you need?" She asked. "No thank you," I responded, "I think I'm all set." I shut my book and turned off the lamp. "Okay then," Brandy said, "Sleep tight." She turned off the light and left the room, closing the door behind her. There I was left in silence. I knew it would be hard to sleep before I even got there. From my experience, the first couple nights in a new and unfamiliar place are always the hardest. I ended up just lying there, staring up at the white popcorn ceiling. One of the things that helps me get to sleep is music, so I got out my MP3 player and put in my earbuds. My playlist was sort of embarrassing, consisting of every song I had liked ever in my life. Needless to say it was a wild shuffle experience, but it still helped. I listened to my music player for an hour or so, still unable to fall asleep. Stereotypically, as soon as I was about to fall asleep I realized I needed a drink. I checked the clock and saw that it was almost 11:00 at night. I groaned to myself and got up out of bed. That same warm hardwood floor was now ice cold on my feet. I was very careful on my way to the kitchen. Walking around an unfamiliar space in the dark is another experience that's not on any bucket list of mine. The last thing I'd want to do is trip over something and fall face first onto the ground. Luckily, I did make it to the kitchen safely. It took me quite a while to locate the cups. By my own luck, they were in pretty much the last cupboard I checked. I grabbed a glass and got myself a quick drink of water from the sink. I stood there, leaning against the counter for a while just thinking about the day's events. I really did have a good time despite unruly hoses and painted nails, and spending time with this family was something I definitely wanted to do again. I refilled my glass once more before making my way back upstairs and into my room. I set the glass on the bedside table and got back under the covers. This time, I was finally met with sleep.
I woke up the next morning to the smell of bacon. I got up out of bed and made my way to the bathroom. Seeing myself in the mirror, I looked like a wreck. The left half of my face had the fur matted down where I had obviously laid in my own drool, and my shoulder was killing me. I must've slept on it wrong. A quick shower woke me up pretty quick, and then I went downstairs. In the kitchen Brandy was standing over the stove cooking eggs, and to her right was a covered plate of what I assumed was bacon. "Morning," I said as I walked into the kitchen. Brandy turned around for just a moment and greeted me with a smile. "Morning! How'd you sleep?" She asked. "Not well," I responded. "Yeah, I can see that. Is there anything I can do?" She asked. "Nah I'll be alright," I said, "I just gotta get used to sleeping in a new place." Brandy seemed to accept this answer. I sat down at the kitchen table and after a couple of minutes Brandy came over with the food. While we were eating Brandy looked over at me. "I need to run some errands today, and I figured you wouldn't want to go. While I definitely trust you, I'm not sure I feel comfortable leaving you home alone just yet, so you're gonna spend the day at Chilli and Bandit's place," She said. "Sounds good," I responded. I really didn't have a problem with that. She was right in assuming I didn't want to run errands, and being at the Heeler house was surely better than spending the whole day home alone.
After cleaning up breakfast, Brandy and I got in the car. I brought along with me my book, my MP3 player, and the homework that was due the following day. After another 20 minutes drive, we arrived at the same house from the other day. Brandy up to the curb, and I got out. Brandy didn't bother getting out of the car, but she called out the window, "Bye! Have fun! I'll pick you up around 5:00!" And with that she was gone. I wasted no time in walking up to the front door. I rang the bell as Brandy had done the other day, and Bandit opened the door. "Hey Oscar!" He said, "Come on in!" I walked into the house, which was slightly more familiar to me now. "Chilli is at the park with the kids. They'll be back soon enough," Bandit said, "In the meantime you can make yourself at home." I thanked Bandit and walked into the living room, taking a seat on the couch. I figured while there was nothing else to do I might as well get a move on with my homework. Considering I had missed the last half of my day on Friday, I had a good amount to do. After about 30 minutes of doing school work I heard the front door open and the sound of running footsteps. Bluey was in the room before I knew it. "Oscar!" Bluey said, "Do you wanna play?" I chuckled at her excitement. "Hang on a minute," I responded, "I'm doing my homework." "Ugh, but that's boring!" She whined. Chilli came around the corner and into the living room. "Leave it Bluey," she said softly, "And didn't I tell you and Bingo to tidy up the playroom before doing anything else?" "Oh...right," Bluey responded, "Sorry." She walked out of the living room. "So what are you working on anyway?" Chilli asked. "Pre-Calculus," I responded, "We're learning logarithms right now." "Oh! I used to be pretty good at these. If you need any help just let me know," she said. She then leaned down a little closer to me and said quietly, "But don't ask Bandit. I'm pretty sure he failed that class and had to retake it." I laughed. "Okay. Thanks for the advice," I said. Chilli nodded and left the room. After another 15 minutes had passed, I had finally finished my homework. It was time to see what on Earth Bluey and Bingo had in store.
