(Song for this chapter: "Wild Wild World" acoustic by: Set It Off)
A tree outside knocks against my window, attempting to pull me from sleep. Ignoring the sound, I pull the covers closer to my body and roll on my side. The wind picks up making the tree hit the glass louder. That's when I realize there's not a tree near my window. Sitting up in bed, I look over and see Calum standing on my balcony, frantically tapping the door.
I quickly get up and unlock the door, letting him in. "What the heck do you think you're doing?" I whisper yell at him.
"Do you have any idea what time it is? You're going to be late to school. Honestly Riley, you're a senior now. You would think this would stop being a routine for you."
Glancing at the clock sitting on my nightstand, I see it's almost seven thirty; class starts at eight. I groan, "I must've forgot to set my alarm."
Calum ignores my comment and goes to my closet, pulling out a gray t-shirt, black hoodie, and a pair of skinny blue jeans. He throws the items on my bed and turns his back to me, signaling for me to get dressed.
I slip on the jeans first, considering I'm only in a tank top and underwear. Then I pull the shirt over my head and lastly slide the hoodie over the shirt. I walk past Calum and into the bathroom. I run a brush through my tangle free, dark hair then brush my teeth. Calum follows me, leaning against the doorframe, watching me with a scowl.
"What?" I mumble, my mouth full of toothpaste.
"You're lucky I came and got you," he states like it's the most annoying thing in the world.
I roll my eyes. "Oh yes, what would I do without you? God forbid I'm late to high school, the most important four years of my life," I say, my words dripping with sarcasm.
He turns away clearly unsatisfied with my reply.
"Cal, I'm sorry," I say chasing after him, "you know I didn't mean it."
"I know," he says, now downstairs. He holds my backpack out to me. I take it and sling one strap over my left shoulder and we walk out the door. Thankfully the school is only about a fifteen-minute drive from here. I get into Calum's car and he pulls out of the driveway.
"Thank you," I say after a few minutes of silence.
He gives me a smirk. "It's my job."
Now at school, we run to our first hour. As soon as we both sit down, the late bell rings.
"Miss Parker and Mr. Hood. Cutting it close again, I see." Our math teacher, Mrs. Bell calls us out for the third time in the past week.
"I apologize, Mrs. Bell," Calum says, "I promise it won't happen again."
"That's what you said the last time," she says disapprovingly.
The whole class lets out a couple giggles until the teacher tells them to be quiet. I sink further down in my chair. Calum catches my attention from across the room. "You owe me," he mouths. I ignore him and face the chalkboard, trying my best to focus on the boring lesson being taught today. Mondays are the worst.
"What do you think, Riley?" Calum asks.
"Huh? Oh, uh great idea, Cal," I say not remembering what the question was. I zoned out for a few minutes and pretty much missed the whole conversation. It's lunchtime and Calum and I are walking outside towards our picnic table in the courtyard. We set our trays on the table and sit down before Calum repeats himself.
