Raising A Bun In The Apocalypse

Chapter 5

At home, after she sent An Wei to change and wash his hands for dinner, An Yiyi ran to her own room with haste. She has been so busy, she truly had little time to do every safeguarding measure such as stocking up water. Luckily, she had bought enough drums and water containers.

Frantically, An Yiyi filled up her 200L capacity drums, filling it up in her bathroom with a hose. An Yiyi will start tonight, even when sleeping, for the rest of the week. Anyways, the water will be rationed only after a month, and the electricity will disappear after 2 months. By that time, surely she can fill her 200 empty drums.

Afterwards, she quickly whipped up a warm meal for An Wei with 2 vegetable sides, and 2 meat dishes. They finished with 2 bowls of rice each.

"An Wei," She gently called out to him. "You heard the news, today right?" She prompted him, and he tilted his head with nod, "En."

An Yiyi placed her hand on his head, "How about accompanying Mom for a week? I'm worried it will be too troublesome outside at this time. The weather is starting to be too hot." She reasoned with him.

Naturally, An Wei noticed it too. In school, asides from having an air conditioner, there was also two fans blowing air around the classroom. This was after a child fainted due to the heat.

An Yiyi was frightened that the apocalypse will come earlier and she won't be by his side. Since the time is all wrong, and crooked, she has to be sure. Otherwise, what would her hoarding and saving up be for?

"Okay, i will listen to mom." An wei nodded, smiling childishly, she squeezed his cheeks and hugged him with a squeal.

"Let's exercise and practice the self defense moves you've learned everyday."

At night, she managed to fill up 50 of her drums, after using two hoses altogether. Even if she only managed to sleep for 4 hours, she felt alright.

Later, she could rest, but now there are things she needs to buy, such as more gasoline, more food to fill up her pantry at home. Only one of her large freezers were filled with lean meat purchased days ago, while the other she had planned to store ice, popscicles, and frozen buns, dumplings, bao zi's etc. Which she would make today.

An Yiyi planned to take An Wei with her to the market, so after they had a hearty meal, mother and son went into the wet market.

An Yiyi bought 10 kilos of ground pork,7 kg ground beef and chicken. Then she proceeded to buy vegetable fillings, such as cucumber, leak, potato, and bought extra seasonings like salt, pepper, chili, liquid seasoning, fish sauce etc. three bottles each. Then she planned to buy wrapper for dumplings, and flour and yeast, oil for the steamed bun.

At home, they unloaded their groceries. She instructed her son to wash his hands, and help her wash vegetables. Then she started chopping the ingredients, and then taught him how to make the dough.

He was so cute, focused on massaging the dough, An Yiyi decided to take a picture of him. She would show him the picture of his when he was older. Seriously shaping the dough.

An Yiyi then seriously washed and season the meat, using separate bowls but same flavor and seasoning. Afterwards, they started making the buns and dumplings, only until 11. They had a small lunch, and she patted little bun to sleep!

An Yiyi kissed his forehead, praising him for his good job as he drifted into an afternoon nap.

Then, she proceeded to finish the job they left behind. They had only collectively made 100 buns and dumplings, with An Yiyi making 85 and little bun making the rest. Soon as she got the hang of it, An Yiyi was able to complete her task, ending up with 200 pork bun, 150 chicken bun, 150 beef bun. Then she made 170 pork dumpling and 200 vegetable dumplings. She vacuum sealed all of it, and put them in the freezer.

After making sure that her son was tucked safely in the bed, An Yiyi decided to drive to the car company. They sell brand new, and second hand cars, and she wasn't necessarily picky about such things, especially with her budget; but she would prefer if it was bulletproof windows, and the vehicle was similar to an armour.

An Yiyi said this to the sales person, and she was given 2 options. One is a hummer that could seat six comfortably, with space in the back, and the other is a modified RV with 2 medium sized rooms, a bathroom and a small kitchen.

"I would recommed this rv, especially for travelling. Not only is it comfortable, with 300 liter water tank, it also has a functioning solar panel above, and bulletproof tinted windows. However, the price is a little big." The salesperson says, "It costs 3.5 million. Although it's second hand, the first owner is a rich second generation, who only used it twice."

An Yiyi winced, "Is there any way for an installment plan?"

The salesperson, gestured. "It's available, ofcourse, but the owner want atleast half a million down payment."

"And how long will the paperwork take to be processed?" She flexed her fingers. She still has 1.5 million, and 500,000 is a bargain. How else would they try to charge her in the middle of the apocalypse? Can they breave through zombies to ask for money?

"A day is available." The salesperson said cheerily, "We need your id, and some paperwoork."

"Great." An Yiyi nodded, and entered the office, snacking on some nuts and sipping tea while the salesperson walked her through the contract and such. "Can i ask you to prepare some extra parts? Such as tires, wiper fluid, motor oil and maintence parts? I'm planning to take a trip with my family to the countryside, and it would make me feel safe if i have replacement."

"We can prepare some, ofcourse. We can even give you two extra tire for free!" An Yiyi happily signed the paperwork, where it states she has to pay 25,000 per month. "You can pick up the car tommorow, no problem."

"Happy to cooperate." An Yiyi shook hands with him, and the salesperson also smiled happily because of his commission.

Afterwards, it was only two hours. An Yiyi decided to pick up her ready made meals, and did some minor shopping; canned mushroom, corn, peas, beans, spam all ten each. Also bought 15 kilo rice. She also bought 5 packs of ten biscuits in two flavors, 4-1L fresh milk, 60 packs of water. Then she also bought 3 pieces of body wash, shampoo in 2 variety. Then she bought 5 loaves of bread, 3 kinds of spread. She also bought 12 lunchboxes, and sanitary napkins. An Yiyi also bought 5 bottles of mouthwash, wet wipes, cat litter and cat food.

After passing by the pharmacy, she pondered for a while and bought 3 boxes of contraceptive and 10 boxes of condoms. Although she has no use of it, she could trade it with young couples.

When she said what she wanted to buy, the cashier looked at her weirdly, but her face was normal and stoic. Let others be embarassed, she's not! She's a grown woman afterall.
