The air grew heavier as Jung Yoon ventured deeper into the cursed forest. The trees, gnarled and twisted, seemed to whisper to him, their branches stretching out like claws in the thick mist. Each step he took echoed in the unnerving silence, and though the dokkaebi had warned him of the dangers ahead, nothing could have prepared him for the suffocating atmosphere of this place.
Jung Yoon's thoughts were focused solely on Tae Ah. He knew he was getting closer, but the path was becoming more treacherous, and the cursed energy surrounding the forest made it difficult to keep his bearings. His hands tightened around the talisman hanging from his neck, hoping it would offer some protection.
After what felt like hours of walking, a faint glow appeared in the distance. The light was soft and flickered like a lantern, but it had a warmth to it that contrasted sharply with the cold, eerie atmosphere of the forest. Jung Yoon cautiously approached, his instincts on high alert.
As he neared the source of the light, he saw her—sitting gracefully on a rock, her long black hair cascading over her shoulders, and her pale skin illuminated by the soft glow of an ethereal flame. Her nine tails swayed lazily behind her, each one adorned with faint, shimmering patterns that seemed to move like smoke.
A Gumiho.
Jung Yoon had heard stories about the Gumiho—mysterious, dangerous creatures known to seduce men and devour their hearts. But the one sitting before him had an air of calmness, almost regal, as though she was waiting for him.
"Ah, so you've come at last," the Gumiho said, her voice melodic and laced with amusement. "I've been expecting you, Jung Yoon."
He stopped in his tracks, surprised that she knew his name. "You know who I am?"
The Gumiho smiled, revealing a hint of her sharp, fox-like teeth. "Of course. The souls of this world speak of you. A living boy wandering in the land of the dead—searching for a girl he loves." She tilted her head slightly. "Quite the romantic quest."
Jung Yoon kept his distance, unsure of her intentions. "I'm looking for Tae Ah. Can you help me?"
The Gumiho's eyes flickered with a mixture of curiosity and something deeper—something ancient. "Help you? That depends on what you have to offer in return."
Jung Yoon hesitated. He knew that making a deal with a Gumiho could be dangerous, but he was running out of options. "What do you want?"
She stood slowly, her nine tails fanning out behind her in a mesmerizing display. "It's not your heart I'm after, if that's what you fear," she said with a smirk. "I have no use for such things. What I want is information."
"Information?" Jung Yoon asked, confused.
The Gumiho nodded, her gaze becoming more intense. "There are secrets in the soul world—ancient, forgotten truths. I've been trapped in this realm for centuries, bound by forces even I do not fully understand. What I desire is knowledge—about the living world, about the nature of souls, and about the Jeoseung Saja."
"The Jeoseung Saja?" Jung Yoon's interest piqued. "Why do you want to know about them?"
The Gumiho's expression darkened. "They control the flow of souls, deciding who lives, who dies, and who is trapped in between. I have spent countless years trying to uncover their weaknesses, their hidden rules. If you can help me with this, I will tell you where Tae Ah is—and how to break the curse that binds her."
Jung Yoon was silent for a moment, considering her offer. He had already learned about the Jeoseung Saja from his research, but there was still so much he didn't know. Could he trust this Gumiho? Her motives were murky, but he couldn't ignore the fact that she might hold the key to finding Tae Ah.
"I don't know much about the Jeoseung Saja," Jung Yoon admitted, "but I'll tell you what I've learned. In return, you tell me where Tae Ah is."
The Gumiho smiled again, this time more genuine. "A fair trade."
Jung Yoon began recounting everything he had learned during his journey—the role of the Jeoseung Saja as guides for the dead, the legends that said they could be swayed by powerful emotions or ancient rites, and the stories of those who had tried to escape their grasp. The Gumiho listened intently, her sharp eyes never leaving him.
When he finished, the Gumiho sighed, as if processing the information. "You are wise for one so young," she said softly. "And yet, there is so much you still do not know."
She stepped closer, her tails trailing behind her like a living mist. "Tae Ah is not just trapped by a curse. She is caught in a web of fate spun by those who have controlled the flow of souls for eons. The Jeoseung Saja are only a part of this—there are darker forces at play."
"What do you mean?" Jung Yoon asked, his heart pounding.
The Gumiho's expression turned serious. "The curse that binds Tae Ah is tied to her soul's past, to the tragedy that separated you in your previous life. It was not just a random act of cruelty—it was orchestrated. Someone, or something, does not want you to be reunited."
Jung Yoon's blood ran cold. "Who?"
The Gumiho shook her head. "That, I do not know. But I can tell you this: the curse that binds Tae Ah can only be broken by confronting the one who placed it. And that spirit resides in the deepest part of this world, where even the Jeoseung Saja dare not tread."
Jung Yoon's mind raced. He had suspected the curse was connected to something bigger, but hearing it confirmed by the Gumiho made it all the more real—and terrifying. "How do I find this spirit?"
The Gumiho reached into the folds of her robe and pulled out a small, shimmering stone. It glowed faintly, like a star caught in the palm of her hand. "Take this," she said, placing the stone in his hand. "It will guide you to the spirit's domain. But be warned—once you enter, there is no turning back. The spirit will test you, and it will try to destroy you."
Jung Yoon nodded, his resolve firm. "I don't care how dangerous it is. I have to save Tae Ah."
The Gumiho's lips curved into a sad smile. "You remind me of someone I once knew—a boy who loved as fiercely as you do. But be careful, Jung Yoon. Love can be a powerful force, but it can also blind you to the truth."
With that, she turned and began to fade into the mist, her voice echoing in the air. "Good luck, human. I hope you succeed where others have failed."
Jung Yoon watched as the Gumiho disappeared into the shadows, her words lingering in his mind. He clutched the stone tightly in his hand, feeling its faint warmth as it pulsed in rhythm with his heartbeat.
The path ahead was clear now—he would follow the stone's guidance to the spirit's domain, confront the one who had cursed Tae Ah, and free her from the chains of the past.
But as he stood alone in the cursed forest, a lingering sense of unease crept over him. The Gumiho had given him valuable information, but her warning echoed in his mind: Love can blind you to the truth.
Jung Yoon shook off the doubt. Whatever lay ahead, he was ready to face it.
For Tae Ah. For their future.
With the stone's glow lighting his path, he continued his journey deeper into the soul world, unaware of the even greater challenges that awaited him.
