The forest darkened the further Jung Yoon traveled, the faint glow of the Gumiho's stone casting eerie shadows across the twisted trees. Each step felt heavier, as though the air itself was thick with the weight of a thousand forgotten souls. The light of the stone pulsed in his hand, guiding him toward an unseen destination. Jung Yoon knew this journey would bring him face-to-face with the spirit responsible for Tae Ah's imprisonment, but the path ahead remained shrouded in mystery and fear.
After what felt like hours of walking, the oppressive darkness gave way to a clearing. In the center stood a massive tree—its bark blackened as if scorched by fire, its gnarled branches reaching toward the sky like twisted arms. At the base of the tree, a swirling mist coiled around a figure that seemed to materialize from the shadows. The cursed spirit.
Jung Yoon froze as he took in the sight before him. The figure was tall, draped in ragged robes that billowed around it like smoke. Its face was concealed beneath a hood, but the glow of its hollow eyes pierced through the darkness, burning with ancient malice. Around the spirit, the air crackled with a malevolent energy that made Jung Yoon's skin crawl.
"Why have you come here, mortal?" The spirit's voice echoed, deep and hollow, as though it resonated from the very earth itself. "This is a place for the dead, not the living."
Jung Yoon took a deep breath, steeling himself against the fear that threatened to overtake him. "I've come for Tae Ah. I know you're the one who cursed her."
The spirit let out a low, guttural laugh, the sound reverberating through the clearing. "Tae Ah... That name has not been spoken here in a long time. Yes, I am the one who trapped her in this realm, but it was not without reason."
Jung Yoon's fists clenched at his sides. "What reason could there possibly be for trapping someone's soul? She doesn't deserve this!"
The spirit's glowing eyes seemed to narrow, focusing intently on him. "You speak with the arrogance of the living, ignorant of the consequences of the past. Tae Ah's curse was not random, boy. It was the result of a debt—one that must be paid in full."
"A debt?" Jung Yoon asked, his voice trembling with frustration. "What kind of debt? What did she do to deserve this?"
The spirit extended a skeletal hand toward him, and as it did, the air between them shimmered. A vision began to unfold before Jung Yoon's eyes, showing images from another time, another life. He saw himself, though he looked different—clad in the traditional robes of a nobleman, his face both familiar and foreign. Beside him was Tae Ah, her smile radiant as they walked together in a sunlit field, hand in hand.
But the vision darkened, and the peaceful scene was replaced by one of tragedy. Flames consumed their village, and screams echoed through the night. In the midst of the chaos, Jung Yoon saw a woman—a beautiful yet vengeful spirit—emerging from the smoke, her eyes fixed on the couple. She had once been a powerful sorceress, scorned and betrayed in her previous life. In her bitterness, she had cursed Tae Ah's soul to wander eternally, never to find peace.
"You see now," the spirit intoned, its voice dripping with contempt. "This curse was born of betrayal. Tae Ah's soul is trapped because of the mistakes of your past. You, in another life, loved another before Tae Ah—someone you left behind, broken and forsaken. That woman's soul became twisted with rage and sorrow, and she placed a curse that has followed Tae Ah ever since."
Jung Yoon's heart sank as the truth unfolded before him. The woman in the vision—she was the source of all this suffering. "But... that was another life. I didn't know..."
"Souls are bound by the past," the spirit continued. "The pain, the sorrow, the love—it all carries over. The cycle of suffering will continue unless the curse is broken."
Jung Yoon shook his head, determined to make things right. "How do I break the curse? Tell me!"
The spirit's gaze bore into him, unyielding. "The curse is woven into the fabric of Tae Ah's soul, and breaking it requires more than words. You must confront the spirit who cast it—the one who still lingers in the depths of this world, consumed by her own grief."
Jung Yoon's resolve hardened. He would face the spirit, no matter the cost. "Where can I find her?"
The spirit gestured toward the massive, blackened tree. "Beyond this tree lies her domain—a place where the boundary between life and death is thin, where the echoes of the past bleed into the present. But be warned: confronting her will not be enough. The curse can only be lifted through sacrifice."
Jung Yoon felt a chill run down his spine. "What kind of sacrifice?"
The spirit was silent for a moment, as if weighing its words. "To break the curse, you must give up something of great value—something that binds you to this world. Love, power, even life itself. Only through such a sacrifice can the cycle of suffering be broken."
Jung Yoon's heart raced as the enormity of the situation settled in. The thought of losing everything—his life, his love—terrified him, but Tae Ah's face, her smile, was all he could see in his mind.
"I'll do it," he said, his voice steady despite the fear gnawing at him. "I'll do whatever it takes."
The spirit's eyes flickered, its expression unreadable. "Then go. Face the one who cursed her, and make your choice."
Without another word, the spirit vanished, leaving Jung Yoon alone in the clearing once more. The weight of the stone in his hand felt heavier than before as he stared at the blackened tree, knowing that beyond it lay the final part of his journey.
He stepped forward, his heart pounding in his chest. Every part of him screamed that this was dangerous, that he was walking into a trap, but there was no turning back. Tae Ah was waiting for him, and he would not fail her.
As he crossed the threshold of the cursed tree, the air grew colder, and the world around him began to warp and shift. The sky darkened, and the ground beneath his feet cracked and splintered. He had entered the cursed spirit's domain.
The sound of wailing echoed through the air as shadows moved around him, their forms twisting and contorting in agony. This was a place of torment, where lost souls wandered, trapped in their own suffering. Jung Yoon's steps slowed as the pressure of the cursed energy pressed down on him, but he forced himself to keep moving.
In the distance, he saw a figure standing at the edge of a cliff—a woman, her long hair flowing in the wind, her back turned to him. The one who had cursed Tae Ah.
Jung Yoon clenched his fists and walked toward her, his determination unwavering. The time had come to confront the past and break the curse once and for all.
