Pebblespirit opened her eyes and took a few steps backward in shock. The whole MountainClan camp was littered with blood, scraps of torn fur, and a powerful scent of fear wafted over her. Pebblespirit looked around, panicked.

Where is everybody?! Pebblespirit thought in panic. Her sharp eyes caught a still, bundle of white fur, stained with blood, by the Greatrock, and she tentatively stepped forward. Nothing came out to attack her, and she gained confidence as she edged closer. Pebblespirit turned the body over to reveal the cat's face, and she gasped.

Winterstar was dead, with horrific wounds stretched across his throat and chest. Pebblespirit felt a heavy stone drop into her chest and fear spread from it. She scrambled towards the nursery, and dread hollowed her heart. The kits were missing, and the nursery was destroyed. The nests were ripped, blood trails extending out towards the broken wall, that oversaw the Mountain Cliff. Pebblespirit walked over to the Cliff, and alarm threw her dread off the steep, deadly Cliff.

MountainClan was in war with SnowClan. Pebblespirit saw her littermate, Strikefang get thrown off into a small gully, where SnowClan warriors lunged after him, their big paws allowing them to not sink in the snow. Her clan was loosing, partly because MountainClan cats had small paws and shape, allowing them to leap gracefully and skillfully to the ledges where the clumsy SnowClan warriors cannot reach them, and that made the MountainClan warriors sink into the snow.

Strikefang howled in pain as a gray SnowClan warrior sank her teeth into his shoulder. Pebblespirit felt a pang of regret. Why had she chosen to become a medicine cat instead of a warrior?

As Pebblespirit was reflecting on her choice, a strong and big pair of paws with thorn-sharp claws gripped her shoulders. Pebblespirit whipped around, but the paws were to strong for her to throw off. A pair of stormy blue malevolent eyes appeared in her vision, along with a white-gray face.

Willowstar, the leader of  SnowClan!  Pebblespirit thought with fear. What was she doing up here?  Willowstar smiled cheerfully and shoved her off the Mountain Cliff.

Pebblespirit screamed as she plummeted towards the rushing ground. The ground rumbled and the earth beneath her split open, revealing a hidden abyss. Her heart flew into her throat as she was plunged into darkness.

Suddenly, a single clear voice echoed around her.

"Believe what you see, young Pebblespirit. Your clan is in danger of being in war, but 'as the darkness rises, only the light of the frosted moon shall send shadows back into the ground.'"

"What do you mean?" Pebblespirit yelped as the wind buffeted her face. The voice had quietly vanished, and Pebblespirit was sent with extra force down the abyss.

❄❄❄

Pebblespirit woke with a start in the medicine cats' den, accidentally prodding Nightstone, her mentor, on the shoulder. Nightstone grumbled, turning his head toward her with a half-closed eye looking at her reproachfully.

     "Whatttttt." Nightstone muttered.

"I-I think I got a vision from StarClan-" Pebblespirit mewed, faltering as Nightstone abruptly sat up, his gaze intent on Pebblespirit.

So Pebblespirit told Nightstone everything about her dream, as Nightstone stared at her, unblinkingly.

As Pebblespirit finished with the prophecy, a loud gasp came from the doorway. She whirled around, and caught Featherpaw ducking out of the doorway, intent on an escape. Nightstone rose, a cloud of black fury, and Featherpaw scrambled away with fear.

During sundown, every member of the clan knew about the new, cryptic prophecy that now haunted them. The clan was in full-blown panic, and Winterstar was trying his best to calm everyone down.

A small squeak sounded by the nursery. A small white kitten was staring out of the nursery, her mouth gawking at the panicking warriors.  Pebblespirit felt a strange twinge of fear as she met the kit's wide, bewildered gaze. This small kit was in the prophecy, that was for sure. But was she the darkness, the shadows, or the frosted moon?
