Our Line

"I'm with you till the end of the line" Steve and Buckys famous phrase. But what if the line ends for one of them wya before the other?

It was never unusual to find Steve at Buckys' or Bucky at Steves', the pair never seemed to leave the others side even when Steve found himself sick in bed more often than well. Maybe more especially during these times that they would be together. Bucky would return from school and immediately head to see Steve. He would walk in the house as if he lived there, if Mrs Rogers wasn't working she would send him to Steves' room with food for the pair and explicit instructions that Steve should eat everything on his plate. If he walked in and he was asleep, Bucky would sit and wait on the floor doing his own homework so he could help Steve better. If he was awake they would eat then Bucky would teach. There didn't seem to be a moment when they weren't together.

As they got older they only remained as close, but by the time they were in High School, Bucky had become very popular with the girls - much to Steves' disgust- whilst Steve remained just known as 'Buckys' Best Friend.' Steve, of course, didn't care that many people didn't know, or like him for that fact, but Bucky was determined to show everyone exactly what he saw in Steve. This meant everytime Bucky got a date, Steve would join with a double date with a girl who clearly didn't want to be there. The only time he ever had fun was when Bucky asked out a girl called Angie and her friend Peggy joined along. Steve and Peggy got along like a house on fire, whereas Bucky and Angie had nothing in common. By the end of the night Bucky had stared at Steve more than he had his own date. That was the night when Bucky realised he liked Steve, and more than he had thought of before.

Steve and Peggy went out once more after that night but when Bucky hesitantly asked about it, he just said they were better as friends than anything more. He knew he should have, but Bucky couldn't help but be secretly happy. That was the last double date, and date in fact, that either of them went on until it was with each other.

Only a few months after that, on Christmas Eve, Bucky had decided to confess his feelings to Steve through his christmas gift. Sarah was working late that night so Bucky offered to go and keep Steve company. He normally did, meaning nothing would seem out of the ordinary. Walking the few blocks over nervously, Bucky made sure several times that he had the gift on him.

At home, Steve sat on his couch twiddling his thumbs making sure everything was in place. Peggy had figured out from one conversation after their double date that Steve liked Bucky, even before he did. They were chatting harmlessly and Peggy had counted Buckys' name 37 times in the span of a 48 minute call. After their next date, Peggy sat Steve down on one of the park benches and asked him if he liked Bucky. Steves' face turned a bright red as he spluttered out a pathetic excuse only to realise that he did in fact have feelings for him. He sat there ashamed as he took out this beautiful and perfect girl only to finally realise that he liked his best friend. Peggy was understanding and told him she also liked Angie, that was why she agreed to the double date.

Knocking at his door, Bucky took one final shaky deep breath as Steve opened the door with a smile warm enough to melt all the snow around them. Walking in ' The Santa Clause' was playing quietly in the background as they went to sit down on the old sofa. Reaching into his bag, Bucky grabbed Steves' attention, turning it towards the gift in his hands. The look on his face made Buckys' heart skip a beat as his hands gently picked up the present. Carefully opening it, the wrapping paper revealed a copy of Oscar Wilde's poem collection. Removing the paper, Steve saw one singular sticky tab sticking out the side. Looking up at Bucky, he gave a small nod to the book with tears brimming in his eyes. Heart rate picking up, Steve opened up to the page to a poem called "Wasted Days'
