"What's up, Camp Cretaceous!"
Darius burst through the door, practically radiating energy. My eyes drifted up from the pages of my book just long enough to catch his entrance before I returned to reading.
The others barely acknowledged him with a glance before resuming their activities. Kenji was lazily spinning in a swivel chair, while Yaz and Sammy were huddled on the couch, focused on some sketchbook. Ben sat across from me on the couch, coloring like a five year old. As for Brooklynn? I had no idea where she was, and frankly, as long as I didn’t have to hear her constant squawking, I couldn't bring myself to care.
“Not sure any of us are in a ‘whoo-hoo’ mood this morning, Darius,” I muttered, flipping a page. “Trekking through a rainstorm and nearly getting trampled by dinosaurs kinda kills the vibe.”
Darius finally seemed to notice the room wasn’t reciprocating with his sunshine-and-rainbows energy. Ben shot me a glare, sucking down one of his weird carob juice boxes. “We only had to walk because you crashed our gyrosphere,” he grumbled.
I knew the taste of that juice because I’d swiped one once from his dork pouch —never again.
I shot him a look and tossed a crumpled ball of paper at him. “Maybe if you’d stopped whining, I wouldn’t have crashed.” The paper hit him square in the face, making him flinch.
“If you’d let me drive, we wouldn’t have been in that mess!” he fired back, clutching his yellow crayon with a death grip. If the kid had any more strength, he might’ve snapped it in two.
“I—”
“Alright, alright, enough!” Darius cut me off, raising his hands to calm the room. “Let’s just chill, okay? Today’s a new day! Kayak day! Who doesn’t want to paddle along real dinosaurs? It’s gonna be awesome, right?” His voice was full of hope, trying to hype us up like always.
I felt a twinge of guilt for being such a downer, but sometimes Darius and I had different views on the whole dinosaur thing. While he saw adventure, all I could think about was my parents.
Darius’s brows furrowed for a moment as something clicked. “Wait... where are Dave and Roxie?” he asked, suddenly realizing our babysitters were MIA.
Kenji, who had been lazily spinning in his chair, kicked off the wall and rolled over to Darius. “The babysitters bailed early and left this,” he said, shoving a crumpled note into Darius’ chest before pushing off again to continue his endless spinning.
Darius unfolded the note, reading it aloud. “‘BRB. Gotta go. Boss-talk. BB later. 🙂 🦕 👍’...” He paused, staring at the paper in disbelief. “Is that... a dinosaur with a thumbs-up?”
The room was quiet for a moment, before a half-smile crept onto Darius’ face. We were all thinking the same thing: even when they ditched us, Dave and Roxie couldn’t help but be... well, Dave and Roxie.
“It’s Dave-speak. Roxie translated on the back,” Kenji explained.
Darius flipped the note over. “‘We have to talk to our boss. Stay inside until we return. Draw, bond, whatever. The radio is set to channel six if you need us. STAY INSIDE. STAY INSIDE. DO NOT LEAVE. Kenji, looking at you.’” Darius raised an eyebrow before continuing. “‘Sorry for the kids’ menus—it’s all Dave had.’”
