It's strange how the end of something can feel like a beginning in disguise. As I stand here, staring at the horizon where the sun dips into the ocean, I can't help but think about how this summer was supposed to be a tribute-a chance to see what my parents had poured their lives into. Instead, it felt like an unwelcome detour in my already disrupted life.
I never wanted to come to Camp Cretaceous. It was supposed to be a celebration of my parents' legacy, but for me, it was just another reminder of their absence. My mother and father were brilliant scientists, pioneers in their field. Their work was celebrated by many, but their sudden deaths left me with nothing but the weight of their unfinished projects and the hollow space they once filled.
When the opportunity to visit the camp was presented to me, I saw it as a bittersweet token of their achievements-a chance to understand what they had dedicated their lives to. Yet, the idea of spending two weeks on a remote island filled with dinosaurs felt less like an honor and more like an obligation. It was as if the world was asking me to step into a legacy I had no interest in claiming.
The island, Isla Nublar greeted me with a heavy humid hug, I could hear the distant chirping and chipping of the island's many surprises having to come. The fairy ride was calm to say the least but it was much better to be on land for once.
I was with a group of five other lucky kids who happened to get the opportunity to see the greatest of the newest additions to the Jurassic world collection. Once the fairy docked we were all met with one of the councilors running the camp that would be our home for the next two weeks.
"Welcome to Isla Nublar, Campers. You are the chosen few, first kids in the entire world to ever experience the awesomeness that is camp cretaceous." The man paced back and forth while speaking.
"I know the trip from the mainland was rough on some of you. Hello, Ben..."
Heads turned to the boy on the sidelines, hunched over and clearly struggling. After he finished emptying his stomach, he managed a weak thumbs-up before retreating to his spot, presumably bracing himself for round two. I caught snippets of the speaker's introduction-Dave, I think his name was, but my focus was fixed on Ben. I couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy for his unfortunate first impression of us, giving us a front-row seat to his meal's last moments. There wasn't much I could do but look away, giving him a moment of privacy.
Just then, a camp jeep skidded into view, and a woman jumped out, flustered and apologetic for her tardiness.
She took her place beside Dave and introduced herself with a bright smile. "Welcome, campers! I'm Roxie, the head counselor of Camp Cretaceous."
Everyone's eyebrows lifted in curiosity, their gazes shifting to Dave, who looked uncomfortable. He rubbed his neck and chuckled nervously. "Well, it's sort of a co-head counselor situation," he explained, though Roxie didn't seem to share his amusement.
"Hmm, is it?" she replied, her tone suggesting otherwise.
Dave cleared his throat, trying to recover from the awkward moment. "Anyway, some of you won contests to be here, some of you received VIP invites, but for the next two weeks, all of you will be getting the five-star treatment!"
