Algebra II. It's easy for some people. It's complicated for others. For Cole and Drew, it's complicated. We are on Drew's living room floor. Cole is very patient with me, but Drew flips out every time he gets something wrong.
"Quadratics are our main focus on this topic. What's the formula when transforming a quadratic function?"
"f(x) = a (1/b (x-h)) + k."
"Good. Where is the vertex in the formula?"
"(h,k)."
"Good. Plug that in and try to figure out the formula of this function." I point to the graph and Cole goes to work. I turn to Drew. "Do the same."
"I can't. It's too hard." He whines.
"No its not. Use the formula and apply it."
Drew starts scribbling and Cole finishes the problem.
"Come on Drew. You can do this." I encourage him.
"That's what she said." Cole said. I laughed and turned back to Drew.
"Why are you being so nice to me? I made your life a living hell." he asks
"Whatever. Keep going with the problem." I decide not to get in an argument and push the idea aside.
"No, really? Why are you so nice?" I could see his face heat up.
"I'm just trying to be nice. I don't know but--"
"It's a simple question!" he yells.
"So is Algebra II! Ok? I don't know answers to everything in my life. I'm just trying to be nice for once! Is that so hard to understand? Please! stop asking me questions about that! You have been for the past hour and its so fucking annoying!" I scream. They look a bit taken back and I sigh as I get up.
I walk towards the bathroom and I hear Cole follow me.
"You okay?" He asks.
I turn to face him. "I'm sorry."
"Dont be. He can be an ass. Im fact, I find it hot when you're pissed."
I smile and slap his arm in a teasing manner.
"I think this has been enough for today. I'm gonna go."
"I'll go tell Drew." I smile as he walks back to the living room. I quickly take out my phone and called Tori.
"Hey Girl! How was tutoring?"
"Hell."
"I feel a rant coming on."
"you know me so well."
"Go ahead."
"Drew is a pain in my ass and Cole is really patient which is good. But Drew keeps complaining and I want to kill myself. He won't stop complaining and it's really annoying. He just doesn't care enough to try even though I know he'll be in deep shit if he doesn't raise his grades. I just don't see the point of my wasting my time by tutoring him if he's not going to try, ya know? Then there is Cole. Cole is literally like the perfect student when it comes to learning. Sure, he skipped classes and all that crap, but he's pretty smart. He got the concept within minutes."
"You seem to like Cole."
"I mean, he's nice."
"Get to know him better."
"What?"
"Go to Starbucks or something and ask him questions about himself."
"Why?"
"Why not?"
"Fair point. Bye." I hang up and put my phone away.
"Hey, Starbucks?" I ask as Cole comes over to me.
"Sure. Why not?"
We drive to Starbucks and I order my Frappucino. We sit near a window.
"You wanted to talk, I assume?" he asks. I put my pointer finger up, indicating him to wait.
"Roxy!" the barista called. I smile and grab my drink.
"What do you want to talk about?"
"I want to get to know you better. I know absolutely nothing about you. Spill." I lean in and put my elbows on the table. My head rested on my hands and I was anxiously waiting for a response.
"I don't know where to start. um.."
"Girlfriends. Girlfriends, dude. So ever had one?"
"Ya. Actually, I did."
I squeal in joy and clap my hands together like a little kid and he just laughs. "So... tell me about her!"
"I knew her in 8th and 9th grade. She was great. She was funny, smart, loyal, caring, accepting, and beautiful."
"I feel like something bad is going to happen.... What happened?"
"One day, she disappeared. I didn't see her for 2 months. I asked everyone if they had seen her, but they said they haven't. Two months passed and she came back. I was so happy and I threw myself at her, but she pushed me away 'cause she had a new boyfriend. Apparently, he was a badass."
"That's why you became a badass. You tried to win her back." I say, putting the pieces together.
"Yep." He said popping the 'p'.
"Did you win her back?"
"No. After that, she never talked to me."
"I'm sorry. She's an idiot for not seeing how awesome you are." I smile. "I know lots of cool girls who would love to be with you!"
"Thanks Roxy, but I have my eye on another girl."
"Ooooh! Really? Ask her out!" I cheer.
"I'm afraid she doesn't like me that way."
"Well, you never know unless you try!"
"I'm pretty sure I'm stuck in the friend zone."
"Oh please. Don't give me that shit. Any girl would die to be with you!" I nudge him and smile.
"You think so?"
"Of course, you big dummy!" I ruffle his hair in a teasing manner. "Who is she?" He immediately fixes his hair and I laugh.
"I can't tell you. It's a secret." He winks at me.
"Fine. At least tell me about the girl."
"Ok. She's beautiful, caring, funny, she has sass, but extremely easy to talk to... I like her a lot. I recently met her, but she's awesome."
"Then get to know her better! Become one of her best friends if you think you have no chance with her. Get closer to her that way."
"Good idea. Thanks. How'd you become an expert with dating advice?"
"I got a little help from a friend. She's cupid's bow and I'm the arrow."
"Ok..." he stared at me like I was a lunatic.
"Cause you know, like--- Nevermind."
"You are hilarious."
"Thanks. I know!" I joke.
We talk a bit more and eventually leave Starbucks. He drives me home and I thank him for the ride. He walks me to the door.
"Goodbye kiss?" He teases.
"Too soon." I laugh. He fake pouts but quickly turns it into a smile. He is too cute. I kiss him on the cheek and he blushes.
"You're blushing!"
"Shut up." He says. I laugh.
"Bye Cole."
"I'll pick you up tomorrow." He winks and I close the door.
