The shift was subtle at first..
After that night—after Sasuke admitted that he wasn't completely revolted by him—Things didn't spiral into chaos the way Naruto had imagined. Instead, it was like the storm had passed, and they were left standing in its wake, a little uncertain but not as distant as before..
Naruto woke up the next morning with a sense of unease in his chest, half-expecting the awkwardness between them to be even worse. But when he glanced over at Sasuke's side of the room, he was already gone, as usual. The room felt empty without him, but this time, it wasn't the heavy, oppressive emptiness that Naruto had grown used to. It was just... calm.
By the time Sasuke came back from his early class, Naruto had already convinced himself that maybe things didn't have to be weird. Maybe they could just go back to the way they were before—roommates, friends, nothing more, nothing less.
When Sasuke walked in, tossing his bag onto his bed, Naruto looked up from where he was sprawled out on the floor, flipping through some old notes. "Yo," he greeted casually, glancing up at Sasuke. "How was class?"
Sasuke paused, his dark eyes lingering on Naruto for a beat before he shrugged. "Same as always. Boring."
Naruto snorted. "You always say that. Maybe if you stopped taking all those complicated classes, you wouldn't be so miserable."
Sasuke shot him a look, but there was no bite in it. "Not all of us want to scrape by in the easiest major possible."
Naruto grinned, flipping a page in his notebook. "Hey, being a communications major is harder than it looks. Not all of us are born geniuses, y'know."
"Clearly," Sasuke muttered, but there was a faint smirk on his face.
It was a small exchange, but it felt normal—easy, even. Like some of the tension that had been brewing between them had finally started to dissolve. For the first time in weeks, Naruto felt like he could breathe again around Sasuke. He didn't have to tiptoe around him, didn't have to second-guess every word he said.
Over the next few days, things between them slowly returned to a semblance of normal. They didn't talk about the tension, about the conversation they'd had that night. It was like an unspoken agreement had formed between them—they'd acknowledge it, then move on. No need to dwell on it longer then they absolutely had too.
Their conversations became more frequent again, less stilted, and they started hanging out more in their dorm like they used to. Naruto found himself enjoying Sasuke's company in a way he hadn't allowed himself to in a long time. There was still an awareness there, a quiet understanding that something had shifted between them, but it wasn't overwhelming anymore.
One evening, after they'd both finished their classes for the day, Naruto suggested grabbing ramen at his favorite place just off campus. It had been a while since they'd gone together—Naruto usually went with Kiba or the others, but Sasuke had been distant for weeks. Now that things were getting back to normal, it felt like the perfect opportunity to drag Sasuke out of their dorm.
