The sun reflected off of the skyscrapers as a freckled fairy wearing leather boots sped through the maze of buildings, her wings beating hard. Five years had passed, and her figure showed that, being fuller and taller. She thought, 'There are other fairies that can take care of the animals. After all, there's plenty of animal fairies, unlike the shortage of water fairies a few years ago.' Jenny needed to satiate her curiosity. She dodged a drone. A nagging curiosity began when she remembered the story of the dark kingdom and her old teacher. A lump lodged itself in her throat as well, forcing her hand to investigate. Using her black binoculars, she noticed a house right next to the border. Her head turned to check if the coast was clear of patrolling drones, and she scurried over to the brown, dreary house. From there she could see the dead trees scattered across the dark fairy kingdom.
She entered the stone house, and was met with a house full of stars. The ceiling was covered in paintings of the starry sky as humans see it from on top of the clouds. The rugs were of various planets. Some were from the Milky Way galaxy, and others originated elsewhere in the vast regions of space. Nebulas and expanding suns dotted the walls, and small solar system mobiles hung from the ceiling. A woman glided down the stairs, and smiled at her.
"Welcome, my dear. My name is Luna, and I am the queen's sister."
Her jaw hung open, entranced by her and her house's beauty. Luna's wings were crescent-shaped and grey like the moon. Her hair and nails were silver while her eyes and her clothes were azure. Jenny cleared her throat. "Sorry for intruding."
"Oh, I don't mind. I have not had visitors in such a long time." She sighed. "What brings you here, Jenny?"
"How do you know my name?"
She approached the young fairy and took her hands. "I can see the future, my sweet, and I have seen a great evil heading towards Fairyland."
"How can you see the future?"
"I am a moon fairy. Moon fairies have the ability to see the future, and live for several more years than normal fairies."
"Cool!"
"By the way, why did you come here?"
Her hands began sweating, and she blurted out the answer. "I was curious about the dark fairy kingdom, and I noticed this house. Please don't rat me out, I swear that I'm a good fairy."
She lifted her hand to her mouth and giggled. "Do not worry, my dear. I will not tell my sister about you. In fact, I'll help you get in there."
"Really?"
"Yes." She showed the animal fairy a map of the dark kingdom, and told her where to go. She thanked her and flew off towards the border.
The trees seemed to reach for her body as she flew over the invisible border between the two kingdoms. She landed on the purple ground, the dead leaves crunching beneath her feet.
Wooden houses were scattered across the plains. As she walked through the fields, she saw fairies with wrinkly skin and gray hair, fairies with broken wings, and fairies her own age with dark purple hair. They pointed at the intruder and whispered amongst themselves.
One person dressed in rags approached her and said, "Are you here to save us, my dear?" They held her hands, and she didn't know what to say, so she simply nodded her head. They released the newbie, tears streaming down their face as they smiled to themself.
She hurried to the castle. It was made of stone, towers spiraling towards the sky, and the door was huge. The door opened to a stone gray floor, several large windows with billowing curtains, and a huge staircase covered by a red rug. She ascended the stairs. She saw a silver throne, and on the throne was a woman with sculpted, knee-length, straight purple hair, a black cape, a medieval-style purple dress, and purple flats. The foreigner bowed.
"Rise." She rose. "Welcome to the dark fairy kingdom. My name is Angel, and I hope you enjoy your stay here."
"May I ask you a question?" Jenny inquired. The queen nodded. "Why are you all of you here? And why did Queen Lavender banish all of you?"
Her head fell. "Some of us are runaways who didn't agree with the "good" queen's rules. The others are people who were undesirable to your queen, such as the elderly, the disabled, and the infertile. As for why, I have no idea." Angel sighed, and it echoed throughout the empty castle. "I want my people to be happy and free. Can you please convince your queen to let us go?" Her eyes grew big, and a tear was begging to be released.
"I can try."
"Thank you, my dear." The young fairy left the castle and went back home to her apartment. The night had risen, and Jenny needed her sleep, crawling under various animal furs.
After a good night's sleep, she traveled to the edge of the world to the castle, which was a large golden fortress. She entered the shining castle, and prepared herself for the guardians. A statue of a lion, a wolf, and a rhino came to life and tried to injure her. The rhino charged towards her, but she flew up and it ran into the wall, wires sparking from its damaged horn. Dazed, it laid there while the wolf growled at her. It almost got her, but she managed to dodge it. The lion pounced at her, but it got the wolf instead. The two animals began fighting each other, and she scrambled into the throne room. Metal against metal screeched throughout the halls.
The queen was seated on the golden throne. All of her clothes gleamed in gold. "Who are you, and what are you doing here interrupting my precious time?"
"My name is Jenny, and I have a request to make, my queen." She kneeled down and bowed, kissing the floor. An urge to make an obscene gesture with her hand was suppressed.
"Yes, yea, hurry up," the queen said.
Jenny rose and said, "I want you to allow the dark fairies into our kingdom."
"Why, in Myra's name, would I ever do that?! They deserve to be banished. They're ugly, rebellious, and awful."
"No, they're not! They're genuinely nice people, unlike you!" she shouted, not thinking of her words.
Her fingers tapped the glass she was holding continuously, and her smile grew. "Would you like to join them, then?" Jenny shook her head, her hand slapped over her mouth, and flew out of the castle as quickly as she could. The animal statues were back to normal, not moving an inch.
