The road was blurry through the falling tears, blinking away regrets and sorrows of their most recent relationship, (Y/N) drove without direction. Needing to simply get away from everything all together, too many memories and too many feeling, it was overwhelming. With a sniffle, (Y/N) took one hand off of the wheel to wipe away the salty drops of despair on their cheeks. She hadn't been thinking properly when she got in the car, drove to her small apartment and grabbed everything she could. She didn't know where she would go, or where she was currently going, she decided in the back of her mind that anywhere else was better. Somewhere he wouldn't look. Her mind got lost in the past that happened not two hours ago, the yelling, the verbal attacks, the revealed truth. It just made another flood of tears surface and breach her long eyelashes. The honk of a horn from another car shook (Y/N) from her thoughts, alerting her to the now green stoplight. Her mind quickly drifted away again into her memories, this time.. the good ones. Half of her was angry for being deceived so easily, spoiling every living word spoken between them, now a bitter lie. The other half was... longing. It'd been so long since someone held her like she was the most important thing in the world, cherished, and that part of her missed it.
Driving on, (Y/N) was lost in a flurry of emotions and thoughts, soon realized she had gone so far, she was now in a small town. Heavily wooded, mountains in the background, the type of town where nothing really happened, the type of place that was exactly where (Y/N) could cool off and heal. Pulling off the road, (Y/N) parked her car and decided to walk around a bit. It was a fairly small town, likely with at least enough service to look at Google Maps if needed be.. which wasn't likely since the town looked small enough to walk around in about 30 minutes or less. There was 'Lester's Electronic's', 'Lil Country Style', 'Foist National Bank', 'Atlas Hardware', 'It's The Only Bar', and 'Muffin Tops' from what she could see.
Walking around a bit, (Y/N) felt her stomach rumble. Right.. in her emotional distress she'd forgotten to eat something. What time was it anyways? Pulling out her phone, (Y/N) checked the time; 3:46 PM. She hadn't eaten anything since 8 AM, she was long overdue for a quick bite. Suddenly aware of just how hungry she was, she looked around for the closest restaurant. Unfortunately, there wasn't one, thankfully however, there was a general store. It wasn't the most ideal, but there could definitely be prepared sandwiches, snacks, or something to eat. Going into the store, she quickly looked around. Grabbing her preferred sandwich from a small fridge, a bag of her favorite chips, and a nice drink. She quickly paid at the.. very short checkout line. Grabbing her bag of food, she began to walk out when a page in a newspaper article caught (Y/N)'s attention. It was an add listing for a camp counselor job.
CAMP CAMPBELL
HELP WANTED
Summer camp in need of additional CO-COUNSELOR!
Dial: 555-CAMP to Apply
Office Hours 7 am-7pm
Ask to Speak with GwenNo, we do not know where Cameron Campbell is.
Huh.. actually, that didn't sound like too bad of an idea. It would be both a job and a place to stay for the rest of the summer, not to mention a great distraction from.. what happened... it seemed like a great opportunity. Besides, how bad could kids be? (Y/N) had babysat before so there was definitely a little experience under her belt.
With nothing to do and no where else to go, (Y/N) pulled out their phone and dialed the number. It took a few rings before someone picked up on the other end.
"Hello?" A rather annoyed and exhausted person, sounding akin to a woman answered.
"Hi, I was wondering about the camp counselor position. Is it still available?" (Y/N) answered, trying to sound confident and assured.
"Oh thank god!!" The person exclaimed in relief, "How soon can you come?" They followed up immediately after, a desperate undertone in the persons question.
"Oh, uhm, I'm not exactly sure where the camp is.." (Y/N) began, looking around at the small town. She still held the bag with her sandwich, chips, and drink in one hand, the other holding her phone to her ear.
The person sighed, "Do you know where Sleepy Peak is?" They asked slowly. (Y/N) didn't want to lose the opportunity, something telling her that this was something she had to do.
"Uhm-" (Y/N) pulled the phone away from her ear and quickly opened Google Maps. Turns out she did need it today. Seeing that she actually was in Sleepy Peaks made a warm feeling ignite in her chest. "Yes, I'm there now actually." She answered, returning the phone to her ear.
"Great!" The persons hope was fueled once more. "If you head down the main road there should be a large sign." They directed, unaware that (Y/N) had Google Maps and could get directions that way.
"Ok, I guess I'll be there soon." (Y/N) gave a gentle nod despite the person not being able to see her. This would be good, this would be fun, this will be a great time to heal. Plus, she was getting paid to look after some kids. A short goodbye later, and (Y/N) hung up the phone.
Going back to her car, (Y/N) opened the bag and began digging into the sandwich first, opening the bag of chips and soda while she chewed. More ravenous than initially anticipated, (Y/N) went through the sandwich quicker than expected and moved onto the chips. Thinking over everything as she ate, she already had her stuff so moving into a cabin or tent wouldn't be hard. A get-away into nature sounded relaxing enough, and looking after kids would both give her something to do and make everyday interesting. Maybe, just maybe the sun did shine a bit brighter each day.. things may just be looking up for (Y/N).
(Y/N) had been about to drive off and go look for the camp she'd applied to, but stopped as she realized she wasn't prepared to be out in the wilderness. It might be a good idea to stock on supplies. Getting out of her car, (Y/N) walked to the store that was labeled 'Atlas Hardware'. A sign printed on the window listed the various items the store carried: 'Lectrical supplies, Screw that stuff into the wall, bear traps, manure, and.. manure.. accessories?
Going inside, it looked more like a hardware store. There was... certainly manure, for sure. Cinder blocks, ropes and chains, anvils, pots, a barrel of boots, gasoline, saws, chainsaws, knives, axes, helmets, ..odd masks..., rocking horses, play houses, play.. cages?, gnomes, kid sized backpacks, bullets, arrows, notebooks, paper bags, safes, empty.. boxes?.., giant rolls of paper towels, some canned foods, tents, and more things. Getting the necessities- rope, a hunting knife, a small backpack, a notebook, paper towels, a compass, a map, some personal items, pain killers, a flashlight and extra batteries, first aid kit, and canned food. Since the camp would likely have a majority of the things needed for camping things like a tent, sleeping bag, axe, cooler, and other things.
(Y/N) had a majority of her things packed in the back of her car already so she didn't need to buy any clothes or anything like that. She paid for the items, and carried the box of supplies to her car and put them in the back. With a full stomach and a heart full of hope, (Y/N) finished the rest of her chips and drink on the way to Camp Campbell, the fresh start mingling with the fresh, crisp air.
