Knocking on the door that read 'Counselor's Cabin', the door sprung open, a young man appeared with a large enthusiastic smile. His hair was styled back and up, short and auburn in color. Green-blue eyes locked onto (Y/N)'s (E/C) eyes. He wore a green shirt rolled at the sleeves, a darker green tree printed in the middle, a small brown vest, olive green shorts, and a yellow scarf around his neck."Well hello there!" The man chirped, surprised but not upset about the new person who came knocking. "What brings you to Camp Campbell?"
"Oh-, hi!" (Y/N) greeted, slightly surprised by the ginger's cheery attitude and sudden appearance. "I'm here about the counselor job? I called earlier today?"
"Ohh, you're the applicant Gwen told me about!" He laughed softly, he was almost.. scarily cheery? It was a bit off putting but didn't quite have the presence of someone evil, he just seemed that positive. One could assume Gwen was who she talked to on the phone, judging by the different way they talked. That or somehow this jolly man was completely different over the phone.
"Y-yeah, I'm (Y/N)! Nice to meet you." (Y/N) introduced herself, offering a hand out for a handshake. One which the sprightly ginger took eagerly.
"Lovely to have you here (Y/N)! I'm counselor David, welcome to Camp Campbell!" The man, now named David, introduced himself. He let her hand go after a quick handshake, a sparkle in his eye. "Come on in and we'll start the interview!" He opened the door to the cabin behind him, stepping aside to let (Y/N) in first.
"Thank you," (Y/N) nodded, stepping inside the cabin. It was moderately sized, two desks mirrored each other from against the walls, across from each desk on the opposing walls were two beds. One of the desks was messy, covered by papers and a box TV, the other was generally clean. It was the same way with the beds, the left side messier than the right. A cork board labeled 'Memories' had photos pinned to it via tacks on the right side just in front of the bed. Beside the door on the left when walking in was a calendar, half a weird wooden bird staff taped up on the wall to the right, and a framed picture with child's writing that read 'Positivity + Max = Useless' just beneath it.
"Sorry about the mess," David apologized, following (Y/N) a step behind her. "I really need to clean up more often." He muttered to himself, loosing his smile for a moment. "Ok! Firstly- ÆAAHH!" David began to speak when the door to the counselor's cabin slammed open, knocking David down. A tan boy in a blue hoodie, yellow undershirt, jeans, tired green eyes, and curly black hair stood in the door. (Y/N)'s eyes opened wide in both surprise and concern for David who's painful groans sounding from behind the door.
"Whoops." The dark haired child, (Y/N) assumed he was a camper, rolled his eyes, unapologetic. He paused when his eyes landed on (Y/N). "Who the fuck are you?!?" He questioned, eyes widening, he pointed a small finger towards (Y/N). The language of the child who couldn't have been older than 10 or 11 years old once more shocking (Y/N).
"I'm-" (Y/N) began, but was interrupted by David getting up from behind the door, rubbing his head to soothe the hit.
"Max, this is (Y/N), our newest co-counselor." David answered, surprising (Y/N). She already got the job? They weren't going to check her resume or anything? No background check? (Y/N) supposed she shouldn't complain, and looked to the child who was now known as Max.
"Hi." (Y/N) gave Max a small wave, a small polite smile making its way onto her face. Max looked very indifferent of the new person, and supposed new co-counselor.
"Oh great," Max began, seeming to grow very annoyed. "Just what I need, another happy-go-lucky adult to deal with." He pinched his nose. David leaned against the open door of the counselor's office, his other hand holding his head.
"Max, be nice. You hardly know her!" David scolded softly, Max looking off to the side, lips spreading out in an indifferent frown.
"Are you a cultist?" Max asked bluntly, turning towards her with a raised eyebrow, the question surprising (Y/N) once again.
"W-what? No? I went to Catholic School once but otherwise no." (Y/N) answered, shocked by the question. Of all questions someone could ask, that was his first. It was only a tad concerning.
"Great! You're better than Daniel already!" Max exclaimed, seeming to want to get away quickly he walked out, leaving (Y/N) with many questions- some she wasn't sure she wanted answered. Walking over to David and offering a hand to help him up, she waited to ask a few of them.
"..So I got the job?" (Y/N) asked hesitantly, deciding it was the most important question currently. David gave a sigh, his eyes tired looked down at her and his smile crestfallen.
"..yes... we need a.. lot of help here. A bit desperately." David explained, his expression solemn now. Looking at him a bit closer now, he looked like a tired parent despite the attitude he had not ten minutes ago. It was admirable how well he held the smile. (Y/N) guided David to the nearest chair in front of the desks.
"I'm going to get my stuff from my car, which bed is mine?" (Y/N) stated, then gestured to the beds against the back wall, making David's green-blue eyes widen.
"Oh.. uh.." David seemed to pause, looking between the beds and (Y/N). Gwen hadn't planned on leaving like last time and he still wanted a bed to sleep in. He'd forgotten about the sleeping arrangements when Gwen told him about a new counselor applicant. While it would make sense to pair the two girls in one bed, David knew how particular Gwen was about having her own space. Besides, he loved camping! He could basically have a camp away from camp! "You can take the one on the right."
"Ok," (Y/N) nodded softly, unaware of the unending kindness David extruded daily. After making sure David didn't have a concussion from being hit by the door, (Y/N) left to go get their things from their car, leaving David alone to sort the new sleeping arrangements. There was an old cot somewhere in camp, so David wouldn't be left without a bed of some kind.
(Y/N) gathered her suitcase and brought in everything else she needed. David had left by the time she got back, probably checking on the campers she assumed. Going to the bed in the right corner of the building, she stuck her suitcase beneath the bed. A pair of arms suddenly wrapping around (Y/N) startled them, making her jump and look back with wide eyes.
"Oh! Sorry!" David apologized, not having meant to scare (Y/N). His hands went up in front of him in surrender. "Just wanted to give you a quick welcome hug!" He assured, the smile back on his face again. (Y/N) relaxed slightly and gave David a wry smile. "You've come at a really great time! Tomorrow the Lake Lilac Summer Social is hosted here at camp!"
"..Summer.. Social?.." (Y/N) echoed in a questioning tone, blinking owlishly. Unsure of what David meant by 'Summer social'.
"It's this big gathering of the camps around Lake Lilac, it's a big party!!" David explained excitedly, clearly enthusiastic about the event. Making (Y/N)'s eyebrows go up.
"That.. sounds like fun." (Y/N) gave a gentle nod of understanding, her mind conjuring up what could happen. Maybe this party would be good, a chance to settle in with everyone around the lake and at camp.
A frazzled tan girl burst into the room, her brown hair in slight disarray, wide purple eyes locking onto (Y/N) and David.
"Oh thank God!!" She exclaimed, her voice familiar. This must be Gwen, who (Y/N) spoke to over the phone. "David, talk to the newbie later, Max is trying to burn down the Mess Hall!!"
"What?!?" David sputtered, eyes widening. He quickly ran out of the cabin in a frenzy, Green following after him equally as quick. "MAX PUT DOWN THE FIREWORKS!!"
(Y/N)'s eyes widened, left behind, and concerned for everyone and the idea of a building being set on fire. She started to run out, but realized she didn't look like a counselor, the kids might question her. Quickly looking to the messy desk, she spotted a lanyard with 'Counselor' written on it in bold letters. Grabbing it, she ran out of the Counselor's office to help in any ways she could.
