Saturday's were nice. I opened my window to smell the distinctive scent of salt water and seaweed lingering in the air.

Ahh the perks of living near the ocean.

I checked my phone to find two messages.

Lia: we have to hang out today! Please call me when you wake up

Lucas: Good morning :)

I had nothing planned for the day, so I called Lia and agreed for her to come over in two hours. (So I can sneak in a morning swim)

I quietly walked through the living room and out the door without being noticed. Both my parents we sleeping.

Maybe I would see the other mermaid! Even though the chances were unlikely, it was a possibility.

When I got to my special spot on the shore, there was someone else there; a girl that looked about my age. Annoyance came over me. This is my spot!

She made eye contact with me so I did what any civilian would do, smile and wave.

"Hey." She waved back casually.

I couldn't get into the water now, she'd see me. Even if I did swim away in time, it looks very suspicious if someone jumps in and doesn't come back up the surface.

I decided I was better safe than sorry, and started walking along the beach.

"Brook? Is that you?" Jay called.

I looked up and searched for his voice. He was further down the beach with Lucas. "Hey guys!" I waved running towards them.

"That's so funny you're here, we just came out here to chill." Jay smiled.

"I sometimes like to take walks here in the morning, it's relaxing. You know, despite the whole being terrified of water thing." I lied.

"Right." They laughed. "Do you want to hang with us for a while?" Jay asked.

"Actually I think Jay has somewhere to be at this very moment." Lucas said checking the time on this invisible watch. Jay looked confused, but then winked at him. Was I missing something?

"Right...I do! See you later! He patted the two of us on the back and ran off.

"What was that about?" I asked.

"Nothing. Shall we walk?"

"Yeah." I smiled.

We walked in silence for a while, feeling the flawless breeze against us. I looked over at the sea and felt drawn.
I would give anything to dive in right now. Lucas snapped me from the thoughts of swimming. Well, more like his hand.
He lightly touched my hand, signaling that he wanted to hold it. I hesitated and looked down at our hands. I wonder what it would feel like to hold his hand. It felt natural as my hand intertwined with his. Butterflies began to swarm in my stomach. Asdfghjkl.

I looked up at him and he wore a smile.

Then something terrible happened.

I started giggling uncontrollably.

"What? What is it?" Lucas asked.

"I'm sorry I just-I. I giggle when I'm nervous. I've never help someone's hand before."

"You didn't hold your moms hand when you crossed the road? I find that highly doubtful."

"You know what I mean! Like really held hands." I giggled.
