The next day at school was buzzing with the usual chatter, but Mia felt like she was moving in slow motion. She and Sarah had spent the night crafting their plan, bouncing ideas off each other like two strategists preparing for battle. They had decided to approach Ryan after school, both excited and nervous about what lay ahead.

Mia's heart raced as the final bell rang, signaling the end of the day. She met Sarah by the lockers, who was practically vibrating with energy. "Are you ready?" Sarah asked, her eyes shining with anticipation.

"Ready as I'll ever be," Mia replied, forcing a smile to mask her nerves. "What if he doesn't feel the same way?"

"Then we'll deal with it. Together," Sarah said, her tone confident. "We owe it to ourselves to be honest."

They walked together toward the courtyard, where Ryan usually hung out with his friends after class. The sun cast a warm glow over the scene, but Mia felt a chill run down her spine as they approached the group. Ryan was leaning against a bench, laughing with his friends, and for a moment, she hesitated. What if this ruined everything?

"Hey, there's Ryan!" Sarah said, her voice breaking through Mia's thoughts. "Come on, let's do this."

Mia nodded, trying to summon the courage to speak. As they approached, Ryan caught sight of them and flashed a warm smile that sent her heart racing. "Hey, Mia! Sarah! What's up?"

"Hey, Ryan," Sarah said, her voice steady despite the flutter of nerves. "Can we talk to you for a second?"

"Sure! What's on your mind?" Ryan straightened up, curiosity lighting his eyes. His friends glanced over, whispering among themselves, and Mia felt the heat rise in her cheeks.

"We wanted to talk about something kind of important," Mia said, her voice trembling slightly. She caught Sarah's eye, and they shared a brief look of reassurance. They were in this together.

"Okay..." Ryan said, glancing between them. "You're starting to worry me a little. What's going on?"

Sarah took a deep breath, stepping forward. "So, Mia and I have been talking, and we both realized we have feelings for you."

Mia felt her heart stop as she heard the words leave Sarah's mouth. It was surreal, saying it out loud, but there was no turning back now.

Ryan's brows furrowed slightly as he processed the information. "You both like me?"

Mia nodded, her voice barely above a whisper. "Yeah, we do."

There was a moment of silence that felt like an eternity. Mia could hear her heart pounding in her ears, and she exchanged a glance with Sarah, who looked equally anxious.

"I... wow. I didn't know," Ryan said, scratching the back of his neck. "I mean, I'm flattered, really. But I didn't know you both felt that way."

"Yeah, we didn't want to keep it a secret," Sarah said, her confidence wavering slightly. "We thought it would be better to be honest."

Ryan shifted his weight, his expression thoughtful. "I appreciate you both being so upfront with me. It's really cool that you can be honest like this."

Mia held her breath, waiting for him to say something more. She wanted him to respond in a way that would put her at ease, but his hesitation left her anxious.

"But," Ryan continued, his eyes lighting up slightly, "I've been doing some thinking, and I need to be honest too. I like you, Mia. A lot."

Mia's heart soared, but she quickly glanced at Sarah, whose expression shifted from surprise to shock. "Really?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.

"Yeah," Ryan said, stepping closer to Mia. "I didn't realize it until now, but I've been drawn to you. You're fun, smart, and you make me laugh. I want to see where this could go between us."

Mia's stomach flipped with excitement. "So... you're choosing me?"

"Yeah, I am," Ryan replied, his gaze steady and sincere. "I think we have something special, and I'd rather explore that than complicate things with both of you."

Mia's heart raced, but when she looked at Sarah, she saw the disappointment flicker across her friend's face. Sarah's expression was a mix of surprise and hurt, and Mia's heart sank.

"Are you okay, Sarah?" Mia asked, concern flooding her voice.

Sarah forced a smile, but it didn't reach her eyes. "Yeah, I'm fine. It's just... unexpected, that's all."

"I mean, I never meant to put you in a position like this," Ryan said, glancing at Sarah. "I really didn't know you felt that way too."

"It's alright," Sarah said quickly, her voice shaky. "I just... I didn't think you would choose Mia over me. I thought we were in this together." Her eyes shimmered with unshed tears, and Mia felt a pang of guilt for having the happiness Sarah was suppressing.

"Sarah, I never wanted to hurt you," Ryan said gently. "You're an amazing person, and I value our friendship. But my feelings for Mia are stronger. I hope you can understand."

Mia reached for Sarah's hand, squeezing it tightly. "I'm so sorry, Sarah. I didn't want this to come between us."

Sarah took a deep breath, visibly trying to compose herself. "I know. I'm happy for you, I really am. I just didn't expect this."

Ryan looked between the two of them, concern etched on his face. "Hey, we can all still hang out, right? Just because I chose Mia doesn't mean I want to lose our friendship, Sarah."

"Yeah, I guess," Sarah replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "I just need some time to process this."

Mia felt a knot tighten in her stomach. She hadn't anticipated the fallout of their honesty.

"Let's talk later, okay?" Mia suggested gently. "I want to make sure we're all okay."

"Sure," Sarah said, forcing a smile again. But Mia could see the hurt lurking beneath it.

As Ryan reached for Mia's hand, she felt a rush of warmth and possibility, but the joy was tinged with sadness for Sarah. They had navigated the tension, faced their fears, and now they were stepping into something new together, even if it felt bittersweet.

Walking away from the courtyard, Mia felt the weight of the moment pressing down on her. Ryan had chosen her, but at what cost? She wanted to embrace this new chapter with him, but she also wanted to protect her friendship with Sarah.

"Are you okay?" Ryan asked, glancing at Mia.

"I will be," Mia replied, though uncertainty swirled within her. "I just need to check on Sarah."

As they walked apart from Ryan, Mia felt torn between the exhilaration of her new relationship and the pain of her friend's disappointment. This was just the beginning of their story, but the road ahead felt fraught with challenges.
