Mia's heart was still heavy the next morning as she walked to the park. She hadn't slept much, the weight of Sarah's betrayal pressing down on her like a storm cloud. Her mind kept replaying the conversation from the night before—Sarah's cold confession, the way she justified everything as if hurting Mia was the only way to deal with her own pain.

Ryan had texted her first thing in the morning, asking to meet. Now, as she approached the park bench where they usually sat, she saw him waiting, his hands shoved into his pockets. His expression was hard to read, but Mia could tell something was weighing on him too.

"Hey," Ryan greeted her softly, his eyes searching hers. "How are you holding up?"

Mia took a deep breath and sat beside him, the cool breeze offering little comfort. "I don't even know how to answer that. I feel like my whole world just flipped upside down."

Ryan nodded, sitting down next to her. "I get it. Sarah's been your best friend for so long. Finding out she's been behind the threats must've been a lot."

Mia glanced at him, surprised by how easily he said it. "You already know?"

Ryan sighed. "I had a feeling. After everything, the way she's been acting... it just made sense."

Mia looked down at her hands, feeling her emotions starting to bubble up again. "She was so hurt, Ryan. I didn't even realize how bad it was. She said she was always coming second, that she felt like she'd lose me too if you chose me."

Ryan frowned, his jaw tightening. "That's not fair. You didn't make her feel that way. She did that to herself by lying and manipulating everything."

"I know," Mia whispered, wiping away a tear. "But it's so complicated. I don't even know if I can forgive her, but I also can't just erase all those years of friendship."

Ryan placed a hand on her shoulder, his voice gentle. "I don't think anyone expects you to forgive her right away. She hurt you, and that's going to take time to heal."

Mia nodded, the truth of his words sinking in. But then she remembered why Ryan had asked her to meet, and her heart thudded with a different kind of anxiety. "What about us?" she asked, her voice shaky. "Last night, you said you wanted to talk about us."

Ryan shifted in his seat, turning to face her fully. There was a seriousness in his expression that made Mia's pulse quicken. "Yeah, I've been thinking a lot about everything that's happened. And I want you to know... I'm sorry for how I've handled things. I should've been more open with you, especially when all the weird stuff started happening."

Mia's chest tightened. "You didn't know any of this would happen. I didn't either."

He nodded, but his gaze was still intense, like he was building up to something. "That's true, but I've been thinking about what I really want. I care about you, Mia. A lot. And I thought maybe I needed time to figure everything out, especially with Sarah in the picture... but now I see things more clearly."

Mia's breath caught in her throat. She knew where this was going, but hearing him say it felt like standing on the edge of a cliff, waiting for the ground to give way.

"I've made up my mind, Mia," Ryan said quietly, his eyes locking with hers. "I choose you."

Mia's heart skipped a beat, a rush of warmth flooding her chest. He was choosing her. But before she could even process the moment, a wave of guilt followed—Sarah.

"You really mean that?" Mia asked, her voice trembling. "Even after everything with Sarah?"

Ryan nodded. "Especially after everything with Sarah. What she did doesn't change how I feel about you. It only made me realize that I need to be honest with myself. I want to be with you, Mia."

Mia felt a rush of emotions, conflicting and overwhelming. Happiness, relief, but also a deep sadness for what this meant for Sarah. She couldn't help but think of her friend, of how devastated Sarah would be to hear that Ryan had chosen her after all the lengths she went to.

Ryan noticed the hesitation in Mia's face. "What's wrong?"

"I just... I feel awful for Sarah," Mia admitted, her voice soft. "I know what she did was wrong, but she's hurting, Ryan. I don't know how to move forward with you when I know she's out there, heartbroken."

Ryan sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "I get it. This whole thing is messy, but we can't live our lives trying to make everyone else happy. Sarah made her choices, and now we have to make ours."

Mia nodded, knowing he was right. It wasn't fair to keep punishing herself for Sarah's actions. She had to move forward, even if it meant things would never be the same between her and her best friend.

Ryan leaned closer, his hand reaching out to gently take hers. "We'll get through this. Together."

Mia looked into his eyes, the sincerity there calming her nerves. She squeezed his hand, feeling a small sense of peace settle in her chest. "Okay. We'll figure it out."

They sat in silence for a while, the weight of everything between them finally starting to lift. The park was quiet, only the sound of leaves rustling in the wind filling the air.

But deep down, Mia knew this was only the beginning. Things with Sarah were far from over. And while Ryan had chosen her, the fallout from everything that had happened would ripple through their lives for a long time to come.
