Over the next few weeks, Henry found himself spending more time at Olivia's house than he had ever anticipated. What began as a movie night evolved into regular dinners, game nights, and study sessions. Every moment felt both comforting and exhilarating to him, and he relished each opportunity to be a part of Olivia's life.
Sitting on the floor in Olivia's living room, surrounded by scattered textbooks and crumpled snack wrappers, Henry was helping Olivia with a school project. As she explained their topic, her passion illuminated her features, and he couldn't help but admire her energy. Her excitement was contagious, and he loved watching her light up when she spoke about something she enjoyed.
"Okay, so if we structure it this way..." Olivia began, glancing at him, her eyes sparkling.
"Yeah, that works. I like how you're laying out the main points," Henry replied, his heart warming. The way she animatedly gestured while discussing their project made her more beautiful in his eyes. He found himself somewhat lost in her expressions, particularly in the way she occasionally tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
As the afternoon turned into evening, the scent of dinner wafted from the kitchen, prompting Henry to glance toward the sounds of clattering pots and Jen's cheerful voice. She often invited him to stay for dinner, but tonight felt particularly special. There was warmth in the air, a sense of family he had long craved since losing his mother.
After finishing their project, Olivia leaned back against the couch, stretching her arms above her head and smiling brightly. "I'm so glad we got that done! Now we can relax a bit before it's due."
Henry chuckled, leaning back as well. "Yep, we totally nailed it. I'm proud of us." He felt a sense of satisfaction in knowing that he had contributed to something important to her.
At that moment, Jen entered the room, balancing a tray of homemade lasagna, garlic bread, and a salad. "Dinner's ready!" she smiled at both of them. "I hope you're hungry."
"I could eat a horse!" Olivia proclaimed, eyes wide with excitement.
Henry's stomach growled in agreement, but beyond his hunger, he felt grateful for being included in such a heartfelt family moment. As they settled down at the dining table, he observed how Jen and Chris interacted with Olivia, playfully bantering and exchanging stories. While he longed for those interactions with his own family, he also felt a pang of sadness mixed with joy at being part of this one.
As they shared dinner, Henry listened intently to the stories Chris shared, laughing at their shared family humour while occasionally stealing glances at Olivia. Every time their eyes met, something stirred in him. He couldn't deny how stunning he found her—his heart would race a little whenever she smiled, and he would often find himself captivated by her animated expressions.
However, his admiration went beyond her charm; he often noticed Olivia's gaze linger on him, especially when she looked at his blond hair and blue eyes. She had told him before how much she loved those features, often complimenting him in soft yet lingering tones that made his cheeks flush. He couldn't help but feel flattered whenever she mentioned how handsome she thought he was, her appreciation shining brightly in her smile.
After dinner, once the dishes were cleared, Olivia suggested a game night. "Let's play 'Guess Who'! It's been forever since we've played board games."
While the three of them set up the game, Henry took a moment to breathe it all in. The laughter, the playful competitiveness, the warmth of sharing these moments together felt like a breath of fresh air. This was the kind of family he yearned for, the kind of connection he wished he had with his own father.
His thoughts drifted to the strained relationship he had with his dad—the long silences, the unasked questions, and the emotional distance that had formed like an impenetrable wall. His mom's passing had only widened the gap, leaving him feeling lost and alone. But here, with Olivia's family, he found a version of home he hadn't thought possible.
