I'm sitting in my car, staring at the mall through the windshield. The engine hums softly, but my mind is racing. Leaving Shanaya there, all alone, feels like a mistake. She stood in her shining dress, laughing, completely unaware of the darkness that surrounded me. What is it about this girl that makes my heart feel alive again? I shouldn’t be feeling anything. It’s been years since I let anyone close, years since I allowed myself to trust.
I turn the ignition, and her favourite song starts playing, wrapping around me like a warm blanket. It’s infuriating how much I think about her. “Why do you have to be so reckless, Shanaya?” I mutter under my breath, gripping the steering wheel tighter. She doesn’t understand the danger of being near me.
As I pull into the parking lot of the dark building, I remind myself why I’m here. To the world, this is just another business meeting. But for me, it’s about saving lives—children taken from their homes, victims of terrible crimes that no one talks about. This all began one dark night that still haunts me.
I step out of the car, feeling the weight of responsibility pressing down on me. The hallway is dimly lit, and I can sense the tension in the air. My team is waiting in the meeting room: Mia, the tech genius; Karan, the head of operations; and Rohan, the mastermind behind our plans. They nod as I enter.
“Late again,” Karan remarks, crossing his arms.
“Traffic,” I reply, trying to sound calm.
Mia raises an eyebrow. “Was it some girl keeping you busy?”
“Let’s focus,” I snap back, trying to shake off the irritation. I don’t want to talk about her right now.
Rohan leans forward, his expression serious. “We’ve got intel about a shipment of kids coming in tonight. We need to intercept.”
I nod, pushing thoughts of Shanaya to the back of my mind. We start discussing the plan, going over every detail. Just when we begin to feel like we’re making progress, the sound of gunfire shatters the air. My heart races.
“Get down!” I yell, instinct kicking in as I draw my weapon.
Mia quickly flips a table for cover. Karan moves to secure the exits, while Rohan scans for the source of the shots. I can’t afford to panic—not now.
Suddenly, a group of armed men bursts in, and chaos erupts. Gunshots ring out, echoing off the walls. I can feel the adrenaline surging through me as I aim and fire at the nearest threat.
“Mia, behind you!” I shout, but I’m too late. I fire at the man approaching her, taking him down just in time. But as I do, I feel a sharp pain hit my head, like a heavy blow. I stumble, blood trickling down my face, my vision blurring for a moment.
“Keep fighting!” Karan’s voice cuts through the chaos. I push myself back up, adrenaline pumping as I focus on the task at hand.
We exchange fire with the intruders, the noise deafening. I see Rohan take a hit, stumbling back, and my stomach drops.
