Since the egg incident, mom really doesn't like me hanging out with guys instead of girls. She basically said she would rather have drama then adventures. But okay, okay I see how it is. Mr.Newton didn't press charges, he didn't even tell us to clean up our mess, he only told us that we had to spend an hour every evening talking and working for Ms.Chester, his next door neighbor. None of us understood why.
Pulling my damp hair into a tight ponytail, I stared into the mirror. Ever since I met Cameron, he boosted my self esteem. I felt like I could be myself, as demoting as that sounds. I pulled on a t-shirt, a pair of capris, and my favorite pair of shoes, my blue converse. Pushing my glasses back up, I turned to pick up my backpack.
Sighing, I walked to my brothers room and knocked on the open door. Cole, my brother, held his phone five inches from his face and was squinting.
"Stop denying your need for glasses. Your phone is literally inches from your face dingbat." I laughed and threw a granola bar at him.
"Shut up. I'm not a nerd like you." He was right, he isn't.
Cole is skinny and tall. I am short and chunky. Cole is athletic and popular. I would rather curl up with a book by myself.
Glaring at Cole before I walked out, "you will someday. And right now, it's time for your first day being a Junior!"
Scurrying downstairs, I kissed dad on the cheek, picked up an apple, and ran out the door. I met Cameron and the twins at the bus stop when my brother opened the front door and yelled, "GET SOME!"
I didn't get mad or turn red because Cameron and I are okay. Just okay.
"Excited for school?" Cameron pushed me with his shoulder.
"Yeah sorta." I murmured while watching the twins throw grapes at each other's faces.
"You don't seem excited." He frowned.
"I am." I smiled without showing my teeth.
The screechy old bus slowly came to a stop in front of us. Getting in, I scanned the bus for an empty seat. I sat down, hoping Cameron would sit next to me.
He didn't.
Cameron walked passed me and sat next to his rude friends, Sean, Aaron, and Jay. Why do I call them rude? Because they are part of the popular kids. The kids that put the "nerds" down for not being a walking advertisement by not wearing Nike shoes.
I felt lonely, but it was just a bus ride.
But it wasn't just the bus ride. It was all day, Cameron's nice boy cover seemed to vanish. He didn't even say hi in the hallways.
Finally in seventh period, we had class together, Mr.Lawrence's. As 28 other kids and I shuffle into his class I search for seats.
Glancing around, I found an empty seat next to Cameron. Wow shocker.
Sliding into my seat Cameron looked up at me and smiled.
"Hey." he said.
"W-T-F? Why have you been avoiding me?" I angry whispered to him.
"What do you mean?" Cameron stretched backwards with a partial flex.
"Students in the back." Mr.Newton said as our cue to shut up. I glared at Cameron and looked down at my book, "Where The Red Fern Grows."
I like him lots but at the same time I want to punch him in his gorgeous face.
Class zipped by fast, probably because I was so swept up in my thoughts that I wasn't paying attention.
The last bell of the day rung, and I was just about to run out when Mr.Newton called me back.
"Ms.Chester's house?" Mr.Newton looked down at me from his glasses.
I nodded and walked alone to the bus stop outside. Cameron was talking to his group of friends.
I had no one else. Well, I had Kenzie. But she was younger than me and had dance all summer with Abby Lee. And when she had a chance to hang out with me, I would already be with Cameron.
Feeling alone and hurt, I walked home instead of waiting for the bus. Guys are so confusing.
"Ugh!" I accidentally said out loud.
Stomping home I reached my front door before the bus did. Yeah, it was that slow.
"Hi honey how was your day?" Mom asked, but I completely disregarded her.
Collapsing on my bed tears of frustration built up. Why did Cameron just ignore me? I thought we had something special.
He's messing with my mind. I jumped at the sound of something hit my window.
Glancing over teary-eyed at my window I wiped my eyes and stood up. Pushing my window open I saw Cameron, Trey, and Gray throwing pebbles.
"Come on we're going to Ms.Chester's!" Gray yelled.
"Okay okay fine." I pulled my shoes back on and rushed through the front door again, ignoring my mom.
The four of us trudged down the street to the light pink house with brown tile roof. All the windows were covered with a black blanket. The guys all looked at me when we came to the door, they depended on me to knock on it for them.
Shaking, my small fingers curled into my palm as I hit my knuckles against the hard wood.
A few silent moments went by until the door creaked open an inch. A puff of smoke blew through the crack and into our faces.
Hacking and wheezing, an elderly woman opened the door.
She was tall and thin with long fingers. Her nails painted red, she wore a mink coat. Her lips held six coats of purple lipstick on her wrinkly face.
"Cameron Long, Trey and Gray Sanders," the woman said before taking another inhale of a cigarette, "and Mia Leon."
We all froze, still not speaking a word.
"Come in. Craig told me you'll be coming over here. I'm Ms.Chester. But you kids call me Matilda." Matilda said blowing smoke out her nostrils.
"Now, explain." She sat down in a red chair.
