As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting warm hues across the sky, I sat on a nearby rock, feeling concrete below my feet. The chaotic events of the day had left me drained, and all I longed for was a moment of solace. Just then, Carmen approached, a mischievous smile playing on her lips.
"Kiya! You're looking a bit worse for wear. How about a wardrobe upgrade?" she said, her tone teasing yet warm. She knelt down beside me, rummaging through a bag she carried.
"Wardrobe upgrade?" I raised an eyebrow, curious. "What do you mean?"
Carmen pulled out a sleek black shirt, its fabric soft and inviting. "This will look amazing on you. Trust me!" Then she fished out a pair of stylish flare jeans, holding them up like a trophy. "And these! I think you'll love them."
I couldn't help but smile. "Thanks, Carmen, but where did you even get those?"
"Let's just say I have my sources," she winked, before handing over the clothes. "Just put them on, okay? You'll feel like a new person."
As I examined the shirt and jeans, Franklin strolled over, a black bracelet dangling from his fingers. "And here's a little something to complete the look," he said, offering the bracelet to me. It was simple yet elegant, the black beads glinting softly in the fading light.
I took the bracelet, my heart warming at the gesture. "You guys are the best. Thank you so much."
Before I could slip into my new outfit, Ethan arrived, his presence a mixture of confidence and concern. He paused at the sight of me, my disheveled state contrasting sharply with the fresh clothes in my hands. "What's going on here?" he asked, a hint of amusement in his voice.
"Carmen's giving me a makeover," I replied, holding up the black shirt with a playful grin.
Ethan chuckled, crossing his arms. "Well, it's about time. You'll look great in that." His gaze softened, and for a moment, I felt a flutter of warmth.
"Want to help her, Ethan?" Carmen teased, nudging him playfully. "You can be the fashion consultant."
Ethan rolled his eyes but approached me, his expression shifting to sincerity. "You really deserve to feel good after everything we've been through. Plus, you always look amazing—just a little messy right now," he said, trying to lighten the mood.
I laughed, my spirits lifting as I stood up. "Alright, give me a moment, and I'll show you how I can clean up."
As I stepped away to change, I felt a surge of gratitude for my friends. They had always been there for me, lifting my spirits when I needed it most. I couldn't wait to show them the new look.
Once I changed into the black shirt and flare jeans, I caught a glimpse of myself in a small puddle nearby. The clothes hugged me perfectly, and I felt a rush of confidence wash over me. I glanced back to find Carmen giving me a thumbs-up, her eyes sparkling with approval.
"You look fantastic! I'll be back in a bit," she called out, shooting me one last smile before she disappeared down the path.
With her gone, the atmosphere shifted, leaving just Ethan and me. He leaned against a tree, a contemplative look on his face as he studied me. I felt a slight blush creeping up my cheeks under his gaze.
"Seriously, Kiya, you look amazing," he said, breaking the silence. "The black really suits you."
"Thanks," I replied, tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear, trying to ignore the way my heart raced at his compliment. "I owe it all to Carmen. She has an eye for fashion."
Ethan stepped closer, his expression serious. "It's not just the clothes, you know. It's you. You have this light about you, even when things get tough."
His words lingered in the air, wrapping around me like a warm blanket. I couldn't help but smile, feeling a rush of warmth at the sincerity in his voice. "That means a lot coming from you."
He shifted, running a hand through his hair. "I know things have been crazy lately, but I want you to know I'm here for you. Always."
I nodded, feeling the weight of his words. "I appreciate that, Ethan. It's nice to have someone to rely on."
"Good, because you can always count on me," he replied, a soft smile breaking through his seriousness. The moment felt charged, and I could sense the unspoken connection between us.
After a few beats of silence, I spoke up, trying to lighten the mood. "So, what do you think? Should I keep the look? Or should I go back to being a hot mess?" I struck a playful pose, pretending to look disheveled.
Ethan laughed, the sound brightening the evening. "Definitely keep it. You should rock this style more often. I'm sure the Psychoids will be too distracted by your fabulousness to eat you."
"Right? Fashion is the ultimate weapon against monsters," I joked, grateful for the moment of levity.
As the sun dipped lower, casting long shadows across the ground, I felt a warmth blossom inside me. It was more than just the clothes or the laughter; it was the understanding that even in the chaos, I had people who cared.
In from the ocean. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest, every beat echoing my thoughts. The space felt charged, filled with the unspoken words we had held back for too long.
Carmen had just stepped out, leaving us alone, and I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. Ethan's gaze was locked onto mine, his dark eyes searching, questioning. The way he looked at me made my cheeks flush, and I could feel a warmth spreading through me.
"Hey," he said softly, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Hey," I replied, my voice shaky but determined.
We stood there for what felt like an eternity, the world outside fading away. I stepped closer, drawn to him like a moth to a flame. My pulse quickened as I watched his lips part slightly, as if he was about to say something, but I didn't want to wait anymore.
I closed the distance between us, my heart racing as I reached up to touch his cheek, feeling the warmth of his skin beneath my fingers. He leaned into my touch, and in that moment, everything else vanished. With a gentle pull, I brought him down to me, and our lips met softly at first, testing the waters.
It felt electric—his lips were warm and familiar against mine, igniting a fire deep within me. I kissed him with all the pent-up emotions I had kept hidden: the fear, the longing, the hope. He responded instantly, deepening the kiss as his hands found my waist, pulling me closer.
Time stood still as we lost ourselves in that moment, everything around us fading into the background. It was just Ethan and me, and I knew, right then, that this was just the beginning of something beautiful.

As I sat down in the cafeteria with Ethan, Carmen, and Franklin, I felt a wave of happiness wash over me. I couldn't quite explain it, but I was practically glowing. My heart was lighter, and a smile tugged at the corners of my lips.
"Hey, what's with you today, Kiya?" Carmen asked, tilting her head, clearly puzzled. "You're unusually chipper."
"Yeah, you're practically beaming" Franklin added, shooting me a bewildered glance. "Did something good happen? Did you finally learn how to cook or something?"
I laughed, the sound bubbling up without restraint. "Nope! Just feeling... well, happy! Can't a girl just be in a good mood?"
Ethan grins, knowing exactly why Im happy. "Oh what a surprise"
"It is!" I said, feeling the warmth spread through me. "I mean, even with everything going on outside the base, I'm just... content."
Carmen exchanged a confused glance with Franklin, who shrugged, still trying to wrap his head around my sudden cheerfulness. "Well, it's nice to see you like this," Carmen finally said, a smile creeping onto her face. "But we need to know what's causing this"
"It's nothing, I promise!" I insisted, unable to contain my happiness. "Just enjoying being here with you guys."
I could feel their eyes on me, filled with a mix of confusion and curiosity, but I didn't mind. I was simply too happy to care. The food, the laughter, the company—it all felt brighter today, and I intended to savor every moment.
