001. NO FUCKING WAY !

real life ; coraline's perspective━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
CORALINE SPARKS tries to cope the best that she can with the cards life has dealt her, she really does, but it's moments like these that feel like a slap in the face to all the healing she worked so hard through.
she sits on the couch of some man she met on a dating app, her eyes boring into the tv—or more specifically, her ex boyfriend's face currently taking up half of the netflix loading screen. she knows her date said something to her, because she can feel him looking at her and he hasn't continued with the remote, but the familiar ache in her chest she feels makes it harder to look away from the face of the man who once left her so easily.
"cora?" snaps her out of it, her eyes blinking repeatedly as the loading screen changes into promo for a different thing. she looks over to the man beside her, finding a questionable expression on his face. "did you hear me?"
"no, sorry," she responds sheepishly, giving him a small smile after he just laughs it off. "i zoned out, what'd you say?"
"i said that i started watching the monsters show and it's actually pretty good," he tells her obliviously, coraline's lips automatically twisting downwards. "like it's not super factual, but it's good. you should let me show you the first episode."
coraline blinks. it's their third date, and he wants to watch such a heavy show together? coraline doesn't know a lot about the show, seeing as she's tried her very hardest to pretend it is not a thing. however, she does know about the case, and has unfortunately seen more about it than she'd like thanks to the show's booming success. she feels her own silence in the seconds that pass after he's spoken, but she really just doesn't know what to say, other than no fucking way, at least.
"um," her voice squeaks as she suddenly sits up and starts searching for her phone, now in the process of coming up with an escape plan on the spot. she finds it somewhere underneath her blanket and pretends to glance at a notification, her date's eyebrows already drawn together when she looks back to him. "my cousin just texted me... she um.." coraline struggles with her explanation after that, trailing off as he continues to stare at her expectantly. after a painful twenty seconds, she still can't come up with anything, so she quickly comes to terms with the fact that she'll never see this man again and hastily stands up from his couch. "she just needs me."
his response that follows and her quickly scrambling to flee his apartment with all of her things in hand is a blur after that. she doesn't snap back into reality until the outdoor air hits her in the face, the chill of winter feeling extra bitter against her cheeks as she walks out to her car.
