it had been three years since the day the barnes siblings met rick grimes.. alot had happened since then, they'd lost and gained people, killed people, gained sanctuary, lost sanctuary. and now they'd just escaped a hell-hole known as terminus. "my legs are tired.." marcee complained quietly to her brother, tugging on his shirt.parker let out a huff before picking the girl up, carrying her on his back. "is that better for you your highness?" he feigned annoyance. "yep!" she smiled, tucking her head against his back.
"HELP!!! SOMEBODY!! HELP!!!!" a strangers voice echoed throughout the woods. parker's grip on marcee tightened protectively as carl tugged on his dads arm to follow him to the source of sound. rick hesitated for a moment before running over to the sound.
as they got closer it became more apparent on who the sound was coming from. a man dressed as a priest, sat on a large rock, kicking away a group of walkers. marcee frowned as parker placed her on the ground, leaving to take out the walkers amongst the others.
"we're clear. keep watch." rick ordered some of the group members. marcee clung back onto parker's arm as she listened to rick talk to the man dressed as a priest.
he introduced himself as gabriel, father gabriel. apparently he had a church a few minutes away. marcee noticed the man's demeanour, he was nervous, like he was hiding something.
michonne managed to convince the man to take the group to their church. gabriel seemed hesitant at first but once he made eye contact with judith and marcee, he gave in and began to lead them through the woods.
"keep close." maggie instructed to marcee, waiting for the younger girl to catch up.
they soon arrived at the small, white church. "hold on." rick called out. "can we take a look around first? we wanna keep ahold of our squirrels." he held his hands out for the keys.
marcee nervously waited for the others to check the prison. clinging onto maggies hand, rocking back and forth on the balls of her feet. around 5 minutes later, rick gave the all clear, heading back outside the prison and handing gabriel the keys back.
"i spent months here without stepping out of the front door. if you found someone inside, well, it would've been surprising." gabriel stated.
"thanks for this." carl gave the man an appreciative nod. marcee could see abraham whispering something to rick, if she was being honest, she didn't care that much to listen in.
"one way or another we're doing what rick does. we're not splitting up again." she heard glenn tell abraham as she walked past.
"how'd you survive so long? where'd your supplies come from?" rick questioned gabriel while the others set their bags down.
"luck. our annual canned food drive. things fell apart right after we finished it. it was just me. the food lasted a long time and then i started scavenging. i've cleaned out every place nearby.. except for one." gabriel explained, his eyes darting around the room at the group members.
"what kept you from it?" rick asked.
"it's overrun." gabriel replied.
"how many?" rick crossed his arms.
"a dozen or so. maybe more." the priest explained.
"we can handle a dozen." rick nodded, looking around at the group.
"bob and i will go with you." sasha volunteered, stepping up to rick. "tyreese should stay here. help keep judith safe."
"that'll be okay?" rick raised his eyebrows, turning his attention on tyreese.
"sure." a grin tugged at tyreese's lips. "you ever need me to watch her, need anything for her. i'm right here."
"i'm grateful for it." rick smiled back.
"you're gonna be fine. you listen to parker, yes?" maggie placed her hand on marcees cheek. "uhuh." marcee nodded in response. "love ya." she placed a kiss on the girls head, her motherly instincts kicking in. "love ya most" the younger girl smiled.
"parker." maggie called over to the blonde boy, gesturing for him to come closer. "i'll see ya soon. kay?" she placed her hand on his cheek.
"yeah. obviously." he muttered, giving her a nod and putting on a brave face. he always got nervous when maggie and glenn went on supply runs but he had to be brave for marcee.
〰️
later on in the evening, everyone returned. this time with plenty of canned foods. the church's atmosphere was light hearted, the room filled with chatter and laughter.
marcee sat next to her older brother, scoffing down her food as if it was gonna run away. "slow down, mar. it's not gonna run away." parker chuckled. marcee gave him a side eye before continuing to eat.
"i'd like to propose a toast." abraham announced. "i look around this room.. and i see survivors. each and every one of you has earned that title." he made eye contact with rick.
"to the survivors." he raised his glass, earning some cheers from the others.
"is that all you wanna be? wake up in the morning, fight the undead pricks, forage for food, go to sleep at night with two eyes open, rinse and repeat?" his words made everyone go silent, letting his words sink in.
"cause you can do that. i mean you got the strength, you got the skill. thing is, for you people, for what you can do, that's just surrender."
abraham's words became slurred in marcees mind.. got quieter.. marcee rested her head on parker's shoulder, her eyes fluttering closed and soon enough she fell asleep.
marcee awoke soon after to gabriel's hysterical cries. "i always lock the doors at night. i always lock the doors.. i always lock the doors.."
during gabriel's breakdown, a whistle came from outside. "parker.." marcee tugged on his shirt, furrowing her brows in fear as she looked over at the window.
"there's something.. there's someone laying on the grass." glenn peered out the window.
sasha wasted no time rushing out the church, running over to the body on the grass. "bob!" sasha yelped.
marcee anxiously watched how rick, sasha and tyreese rushed out the church and soon came back with bob slung in between them.
they laid bob down on the ground, marcee looked at the man who winced in agony. he now only had one leg. "don't look." parker told her, pulling her behind him.
"i was in the graveyard. somebody knocked me out. i woke up outside this place.. it looked like a school. it was that guy.. gareth. and five other ones." bob explained.
"they were eating my leg right infront of me. like it was nothing. all proud like they had it all figured out."
"did they have daryl and carol?" rick knelt down to eye level with bob. "gareth said they drove off."
bob let out a groan as he tried to adjust himself. "he's in pain. do we have anything?" sasha looked up at rosita.
"i think there's pill packets in the first aid kit." rosita replied.
"save 'em." bob winced as he sat up, pulling his shirt down to reveal a fresh bite mark.
