Aurora had always been curious about the Maze, particularly the two boys who ventured into its depths daily—Newt and Minho. They were the bravest of the Gladers, their confidence radiating whenever they spoke of their runs. She admired their determination, and each time they returned, she found herself captivated by the tales of their discoveries and the dangers they faced.
But lately, her curiosity had morphed into a burning desire to see it for herself. What lay beyond the towering walls? What kind of wonders awaited her in the labyrinth? The more she pondered, the more restless she became. One bright morning, as Newt and Minho prepared for another run, Aurora made up her mind. She would follow them into the Maze.
Disguised by the towering grass and the noise of the other Gladers, she slipped out of the Glade unnoticed. Her heart raced with excitement and trepidation as she crept along the path, keeping her eyes glued to the backs of the two boys ahead of her.
The Maze opened up before her, and she marveled at its beauty. Vines clung to the stone walls, and colorful flowers bloomed in the crevices, their petals dancing in the gentle breeze. She picked one and twirled it between her fingers, momentarily lost in its vibrant colors.
Suddenly, Newt and Minho stopped, and Aurora froze behind a tall wall, pressing herself against the cool stone. They talked in hushed tones, pointing at something deeper in the Maze. Aurora strained to hear, curiosity piqued. She was itching to know what they were discussing, but her instincts warned her to stay hidden.
"Do you think we should take the north route today?" Minho asked, glancing around cautiously.
Newt nodded, his brow furrowed. "Yeah, it's been a while since we checked it out. Just keep an eye out. You know how the Walls can shift."
Aurora's heart raced as she listened. The mention of shifting walls sent a shiver down her spine, but her curiosity overpowered her fear. She crept forward, hoping to catch a glimpse of whatever it was they were talking about.
But in her excitement, she lost track of her surroundings. When Minho and Newt finally continued down a narrow passage, Aurora followed eagerly. The thrill of adventure surged through her veins, but her sense of direction quickly faded. The paths twisted and turned in every direction, and before she knew it, the boys were nowhere to be seen.
Panic set in as the towering walls loomed over her. "Guys?" she called out, her voice trembling. No response. Just the eerie silence of the Maze. She tried to retrace her steps but found that every direction looked the same. The vibrant flowers and vines had become a blur, and the paths felt like they were closing in around her.
As the sun dipped lower in the sky, Aurora's heart raced with fear. The vibrant daylight was being swallowed by shadows, and the familiar warmth of the Glade felt miles away. She stumbled upon a small gap at the bottom of one of the walls, a dark crevice hidden by tangled vines.
With dread creeping into her chest, she pressed herself against the wall and crawled through the narrow space, hoping it might lead her back to the Glade. But as she crawled, her imagination spiraled. She remembered whispers of monsters lurking in the Maze, creatures that prowled when the sun went down.
Suddenly, she heard the sound of shuffling footsteps behind her. Aurora's heart raced. The panic that had settled in her chest erupted into full-blown terror. She felt small and vulnerable, as if she was nothing more than a lost flower in a vast garden of predators.
Back in the Glade, chaos erupted as the boys returned from their run, panting and covered in sweat. Gally was the first to notice Aurora's absence. "Where's Aurora?" he shouted, scanning the Glade.
"What do you mean? She was here earlier!" George exclaimed, glancing around frantically.
"I swear I saw her around here," Minho said, worry creeping into his voice. "She must have followed us into the Maze."
Newt cursed under his breath. "We need to find her. Now!"
As the boys spread out, calling her name, Trevor leaned against a wall, arms crossed and an unimpressed expression on his face. "Who cares? She's just a kid. Let her get lost for all I care," he muttered, rolling his eyes.
Gally shot him a glare. "You're heartless, Trevor. She could be in danger!"
Ignoring the chaos, Trevor shrugged, seemingly indifferent to the rising panic around him.
As night began to fall, the boys congregated near the entrance of the Maze, anxiously awaiting the returning Runners. The shadows cast by the towering walls grew long, and the chilling air filled with tension. Every second stretched into an eternity, and with the last rays of sunlight disappearing, dread hung heavy in the air.
"Where is she?" Frypan muttered, pacing restlessly.
"We need to get back in there," Minho said, determination fueling his voice. "We can't leave her in there alone!"
Just then, the Walls began to shift, their creaking sounds echoing ominously. The boys exchanged worried glances, their hearts pounding. "We have to wait for morning!" Alby insisted, his voice steady but filled with concern. "We can't risk going in until we can see!"
As the night deepened and the fear mounted, Aurora remained hidden in her small crevice, praying she would find a way back home before the monsters awakened. With each passing moment, she felt the weight of the Maze pressing down on her, but she clung to the hope that somehow, she would escape its grasp before it was too late.
