Maya had always been a resilient woman. She had faced many challenges in her life, but nothing could have prepared her for what was to come. After rekindling her relationship with Ethan, she had hoped that their love would be enough to overcome any obstacles. But as the months passed, subtle changes began to creep into their relationship.

Ethan's possessiveness, which once seemed like a sign of his deep affection, started to feel suffocating. He would question her about her whereabouts, her friends, and even her thoughts. At first, Maya brushed it off, thinking it was just his way of showing he cared. But soon, the questions turned into accusations, and the accusation turned into anger.

One evening, after a particularly tense day, Maya came home to find Ethan waiting for her. His face was a mask of fury, and she could sense that something was terribly wrong. "Where were you?" Ethan demanded, his voice trembling with barely contained rage.

"I told you, I was at work," Maya replied, trying to keep her voice calm. " I had to stay late to finish some paperwork."

"Don't lie to me!" Ethan shouted, stepping closer to her. "I know you were with someone else. I saw you talking to that guy at the coffee shop."

Maya's heart pounded in her chest. She remembered the brief conversation she had with a colleague earlier that day, but it had been completely innocent. "Ethan, you're being ridiculous. He's just a coworker."

Before she could react, Ethan's hand shot out, striking her across the face. The force of the blow sent her stumbling backward, and she fell to the floor, her cheek biting with pain. Tears welled up in her eyes as she looked up at him, unable to comprehend what had just happened.

Ethan's expression shifted from anger to horror as he realized what he had done. "Maya, I'm so sorry," he whispered, reaching out to help her up. "I didn't mean to...I just... I lost control."

Maya recoiled from his touch, her mind racing. She had never seen this side of him before, and it terrified her. "Ethan, you hurt me," she said, her voice trembling. "This isn't okay."

"I know, I know," Ethan said, his voice breaking. "Please, forgive me. I promise it will never happen again."

Maya wanted to believe him. She wanted to believe that this was just a one-time mistake, that the man she loved would never intentionally hurt her. But deep down, a seed of doubt had been planted. She couldn't ignore the fear that had taken root in her heart.

As the days turned into weeks, Maya tried to move past the incident. She told herself that it was a momentary lapse, that Ethan truly regretted his actions. But the bruise on her cheek served as a constant reminder of that night, and she couldn't shake the feeling that something had fundamentally changed between them.

Ethan, for his part, seemed genuinely remorseful. He showered her with apologies and promises, doing everything he could to make amends. But the trust that had once been the foundation of their relationship had been shattered, and Maya couldn't help but wonder if it could ever be rebuilt.

One evening, as she stood in front of the mirror, tracing the faint outline of the bruise on her cheek, Maya a silent vow to herself. She would never let anyone hurt her like that again. She would find the strength to protect herself and her daughter, no matter what it took. And with that resolve, she began to plan her escape.
