Maya sat in the dimly lit living room, her eyes fixed on the flickering flame of a single candle. The room was silent, save for the occasional creak of the old wooden floorboards. It had been a long day, and the weight of her worries pressed heavily upon her shoulders. She glanced at the clock on the wall; it was well past midnight, but sleep seemed like a distant dream.
Ethan had been distant lately. The sweet, caring man she had once known seemed to have vanished, replaced by someone she barely recognized. It started with small things-a harsh word here, a cold shoulder there. Maya had shrugged it off at first, convincing herself it that it was just stress or a bad day. But the incidents had become more frequent, more intense.
Tonight had been the worse. Ethan had come home late, smelling of alcohol and frustration. Their daughter, Ava, had been asleep in her room, blissfully unaware of the storm brewing downstairs. Maya had tried to talk to Ethan, to understand what was going on, but her questions had only fueled his anger.
"You think you can just question me like that?" he had shouted, his face contorted with rage. "You have no idea what I go through every day!"
Maya tried to calm him down, but her words seemed to fall on deaf ears. Before she knew it, Ethan grabbed her arm, his grip like a vice. The pain had been sharp, but it was the look in his eyes that had truly terrified her. It was as if she was staring into the eyes of a stranger.
Now, siting alone in the dark, Maya gently rubbed her bruised arm, wincing at the tenderness. She knew she had to be strong for Ava, but the fear gnawed at her, threatening to consume her. She couldn't let this continue. She had to find a way out, for both her sake and Ava's.
Maya's thoughts were interrupted by the soft sounds of footsteps. She turned to see Ava standing in the doorway, her eyes wide with concern.
"Mommy, are you okay?" Ava asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Maya forced a smile, trying to hide her pain. "I'm fine, sweetie. Just thinking."
Ava walked over and climbed into Maya's lap, wrapping her small arms around her mother's neck. "I love you, mommy."
Tears welled up in Maya's eyes as she hugged her daughter tightly. "I love you too, Ava. Always remember that."
As Ava drifted back to sleep in her arms, Maya made a silent promise to herself. She would protect her daughter at all costs. No matter what it took, she would find a way to escape this nightmare and build a better life for them both.
The candle flicked once more before finally going out, leaving the room in darkness. But for the first time in a long time, Maya felt a glimmer of hope. She had a plan, and she would see it through. Silent suffering would no longer be her story.
