Chapter 3
Devin
I did my damnedest to do what she needed. I held her in the privacy of her grandmother's office. I gave her a whiskey and I listened to what she had to say. Then I sent Ty and her dad a text. The family needs to know what happened to her.
Kenna doesn't freak out like this. In the five years that I've known her she's never been flighty. Kenna is the most level headed, logical woman I know. She doesn't jump to conclusions and she doesn't jump at every opportunity.
She loves horror movies. She adores haunted houses. Nothing scares her or freaks her out. The woman has a steady sense of reality. She loves football, the outdoors, and has a great sense of humor. If I'm being honest she's almost the perfect woman. Almost.
"I didn't imagine it!" Kenna states again looking from her grandmother to her father and mother. "I know someone was in there with me. Just as I know someone broke into my locker."
"I believe you," the grand matriarch who built this resort assured her, tapping her long fingers on her desk. "I don't like to think that we have a thief in my resort, my home. It's a personal violation to our family."
She isn't wrong.
Grace Masters with her husband Dean built The Masters Resort from a few cabins in the hills of Napa Valley. They planted the vines. They started their dream of becoming vintners and expanded their business. Now they have a thirty five room resort, with three restaurants, two bars and a vineyard that can compete with the more commercialized brands. They made their dream come true and with the family they have risen to one of the most popular resorts in Northern California.
The Masters are kind, strong and generous people. Grace is straightforward and professional, but doesn't take any shit. Dean is relaxed and easy going, happy to please his wife but will defend her with his life. I've only met one other family as close and as generous, genuine as the Masters, that's the Bradford's. The royal family of football.
They too have been through their own personal attacks over the years. I never met the matriarch, Georgia Bradford, but I've heard the stories about her. I was recruited by her son, Blake to play for their team but I chose to be here. Blake's old team and the only place I've considered home in a very long time.
Ty and his family were the reason for that decision. They accepted me into their home and lives when I was alone and in a pretty dark place. They gave me what I needed most and I will always remember that. They don't deserve to be violated this way.
Yes, this was definitely a personal attack on them.
"Devin, I'm glad you were there for my granddaughter." Grace touched my arm and gave it a gentle squeeze. "This son of a bitch needs to be found and castrated for his torment!"
She's a little scary when she's mad.
"I think that's a little extreme," Dean replied, only to get a raised eyebrow from his bride. "I know Kenna was frightened but she is fine. She wasn't harmed and it could have been a mistake. We don't have all the facts yet. Grace, you know we can't make rash judgements. Let's look at the security tape and see if we can find out who was in there. If we can get some evidence..."
Kenna wiped at the tears on her cheeks and nodded, much calmer now that she has the support of her family around her. "We need proof. It's my word alone and that's not enough. I understand."
My brows lowered into a deep frown, wrinkling my forehead and showing my annoyance with her words. Her words are enough. For me it is. Stepping behind her I rest my hands on both of her shoulders and I feel the stress, the tight knots keeping her tense.
