Chapter 9

Kenna

Devin has never given me an ultimatum. I didn't think he was interested in me that way. No one usually is. I'm the matchmaker. The way to get a free drink, meet a socialite that the guys on the team want to be associated with, maybe get a weekend at the resort.

The women who come into the bar beg me to introduce them to the team. They know who I am coming to the resort. It's part of The Matchmaker's Curse. I'm the key into the locker room of receivers and defensive ends and to the quarterback.

I'm Tyson 's sister, the coach's daughter and I'm no one any of these guys feel comfortable getting naked with. They use me to fix them up with the beautiful blonde or sassy redhead, the sultry brunette or the quiet little lady they can't get a read on.

They know I see through the facades of the women who are out for money and status. So they ask my opinion, they introduce me to their dates, invite me along on nights like this and ask me to "get to know" the woman they've brought along. They don't see me as a woman they could date.

I don't usually mind. I'm not interested in a meat head and I'm fairly picky about who I get close to. Devin is one of the few players that I actually care about what he thinks about me. But I didn't see this coming and usually see the signs before most.

"What?" I whisper the word before Tyson interrupts and tugs Devin away from the group.

I don't understand this sudden change. Everything was fine before I left for the ladies room. What did Denise do for him to act like this?

Devin huddled with Ty in the corner and left me face to face with the devil herself and I'm not sure what I just walked in on but my presence isn't what she had planned.

Narrowing my gaze, I became very interested in Denise suddenly and her sudden presence in our group. Is that what this is about?

Taking a few quick strides over, I tugged Devin around to face me and ignored my brother's gripe about my rudeness. "What are you up to?"

He looks panicked. Like I just called him out for cheating on me. That's not who Devin is, I know that. But this didn't just come out of nowhere. Something prompted him to say that.

"You want to get rid of her, right? She is only going to keep hitting on me until I give in or get a girl." Devin's reasons are on the mark. "You and I both know if that girl is you, she doesn't stand a chance of getting me or Tyson."

Thinking about it for a moment, I have to consider the consequences. Denise isn't stupid. She'll ask around and she'll watch closely to see if this is an act or the real thing. That means we can't let our guard down in front of anyone. Including my family.

That could get complicated.

"You know Dad will corner you? So will Tyson. If this is real..." And for the first time, I thought of something that I never thought about, myself. "Devin, this could ruin our friendship. It could be really bad for us."

"Or it could be the best thing to happen to us," he smiled that cocky grin I've seen several times just before a big game.

"But Dev..."

"Let's do this. Really do this and give us a chance." My mouth drops open as he steps closer to me and wraps his arms around my waist. "We're best friends, Kenna. I know you better than anyone. Who would be better for you than me?"

I can't answer that. What if this blows up in our faces? What if I lose him? Am I really willing to risk that? Taking my chin in his hand, Devin makes me look at him. Really look at him for the first time in a long time. I'm not sure what I see but it scares me.
