Chapter 7
Kenna
I had security walk me out every night. The company Devin called upgraded the system on my house and I could now see everything from my phone no matter where I was. And Devin was back to work with the team and no longer staying at my house, or sleeping in my bed.
I can honestly say my house feels empty without him in it and it's never felt that way before. I'm not sure what to make of that.
That afternoon, sleeping with him, was the best sleep I've had in a very long time. There's something about sleeping with a man that you completely trust that just makes you relax more and sleep deeper. Even his snoring didn't wake me. If anything it was soothing, as strange as that sounds.
When I got up, he was gone but he left me a note saying that he would be back after practice. He made the drive for three days. Three hours to and from practice each day to stay with me until I finally told him to focus on his job. He was exhausted and was going to end up hurt if he wasn't careful. I didn't want that on my conscience.
He agreed but still texted me every night to check on me. It's almost like having a relationship with someone. Almost. But better. I don't have to worry about Devin cheating on me or fans coming on to him. He's not mine to worry about that way.
One day he will find someone else and I won't have his attention like I do. I hope I can be friends with her. I hope we get along and there's no animosity between us. I hope Devin doesn't forget about me. I'll miss what we have when that time comes.
Two weeks on my own and I'm still looking over my shoulder but there hasn't been a single incident since the drive by. I'm hoping that this has passed and I can move on with my life. I would like to say that I'm ready to move on but I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Going into the resort early, I am determined to not be scared off from working out at the gym. I have avoided it all this time, using the excuse of all the events we have had for not getting my workout in. I can't continue to do that. So dressed ready for battle, I walked into the gym and straight into Tabitha.
"I was wondering when you were going to come back. I'm glad you came in. I want to work with you again," she took my arm as she spoke and guided me to the free weights.
"I just came in for my walk." I tried to escape her torture chamber.
"You need to build your strength. Ken, you have to be able to protect yourself. You can't rely on Devin to always be there to defend you. I know he's your knight in shining armor and that's romantic and noble but it's not realistic. He's gone. You have to be strong enough to defend yourself." Tabitha's tawny cat eyes drilled into mine.
I hate that she's right. I know she's right. That's the pisser. Devin won't always be here for me. He isn't here now. I have to take care of myself.
"I'll work with you every day. I'll stay with you in the locker room while you shower and change. Girl power. We stick together. But you have to learn to defend yourself." She will push me to get out of my comfort zone.
Defeated, accepting my fate, I nod knowing what I have to do. "What do I do?"
I worked out. I did squats, weights, crunches. I learned how to punch a bag, kick some ass and elbow someone in the ribs. And I reminded myself that I could, if necessary, knee a man in the balls and mean it.
"I know you don't want to hurt anyone, Kenna," Tabitha said as she pinned me against the wall. "But this is a guy who means to hurt you, possibly rape you. Are you going to let him?"
