Chapter 6
Ty
"You're telling me some guy gave you the vibes in the bar and you said nothing to any of us? What is wrong with you, Kenna? You know better!" Lecturing my sister about something that happened weeks ago is useless now but if that's who is driving by her house in the middle of the night, it's not over.
"I thought it was just me!" She defended her actions and twisted the bottom of her shirt around her finger.
She's nervous and scared more than she's letting on. I know my sister is brave and she doesn't play games with her safety. She wouldn't have been this stupid to risk her own well being just to get someone's attention.
Looking at Devin, I watch him rub her shoulders. He is her hero. He won't let anything happen to her anymore than I will. He's just as careful with her as I am. Why do I feel like there's something more to it?
He's been her friend for years but there's just something in the way he is looking at her that tells me that there's more to it. Has my best friend fallen for my sister?
"Ty, enough!" Mom stopped the argument before it started. "Kenna couldn't have known what he wanted with her."
"We need to call the cops," Devin muttered as he drank his coffee. The guy doesn't look like he slept at all last night.
"I agree," Dad was already dialing the number and getting on the call. He would take care of it. This is his little girl we're talking about.
"You need better security," Devin growled and got to his feet. "Cameras on every door, video if we can get it. Especially out front. Maybe we can catch his license plate and track it."
Devin has been thinking hard about this. More than I can at the moment and I appreciate that. He's been a protector for Kenna since the beginning. I appreciate that more. He will never let anything happen to my sister or any of my family.
"Do you have a company in mind?" I asked, getting up and joining him at the window looking out the front window.
"I did some research last night after the drive by. I can arrange for someone to come and take care of it," he turned then and took a long look at me. "What happened to you last night? You look like shit."
"I got drunk apparently. I don't know. I woke up at some woman's place, naked in her bed, and obviously, had sex. She was nice and offered me breakfast and a reminder of what happened. Turned her down when you called." I explained with a shrug.
Devin rolled his eyes at me and shook his head. "One of these days you're gonna end up with an STD or a kid. Probably both."
He's probably right.
"She was nice, polite enough to give me space to talk to you privately and she didn't ask me for anything. She knew who I was and didn't want a damn thing. She's a fucking Bradford fan." I complained as I remembered this morning. "Besides that, she was damn near perfect."
"You get her number?" He asked, knowing how I am, he rolled his eyes. "Of course you didn't. When are you going to realize that you aren't going to find a woman without getting to know her first?"
"I'm not ready." I reasoned and thought about Gemma. She was almost perfect.
Kenna
I let my family lecture me. I deserved it for not being honest with them about what happened at the bar. I know better than to keep them in the dark about something work related. This involves all of us, I should have told them right away.
I let them coddle me. They needed to know I was okay. I have a habit of being overly independent. I don't want anyone to dote on me or think I can't handle my job. But I'm their little girl and I tend to forget that sometimes they still see me as their baby girl.
When they left, Devin stayed behind. He made his phone calls, arranging security for my house that I didn't ask for, telling them to install cameras and video surveillance without my consent but he is doing it because he cares about me. I know that.
He didn't sleep at all last night. He watched the windows, walked from one end of the house to the other and kept me safe. When the car showed up he was in the doorway blocking the way in and keeping me safe from the driver. Still he never went to bed.
It's well after noon now and he's drinking coffee still to keep himself going. I wish he would get some sleep.
"Why don't you go upstairs and get some sleep?" I offer, he can use my room if he wants.
"Are you going to come with me?" He asks over the rim of his mug.
"You want me to sleep with you?" I ask slowly, not sure if I understand the question.
"I'm not going to sleep without you next to me the entire time. I'm going to make sure you are safe. So if you aren't going to sleep next to me then I'm not gonna sleep without you." Devin explained himself.
He is very protective of me. I appreciate it but sometimes it's a little more than necessary. "I don't think that's necessary. And if you don't get some sleep you are going to suck at practice tomorrow."
"I'll deal with it. Are you planning on going to work tomorrow?" He continued making notes on his tablet.
"Yes, I have a job and I'm going to do it. I'm not going to let this creep keep me from doing my job." I explained, not liking the idea of being too frightened to go to work.
Devin nods and finishes what he is doing then sets the tablet aside. "You need to have security walk you to your car. And you don't close down alone. I know you don't like that but you have to be careful, Kenna. Your safety comes first."
"Devin..."
"No arguments! Now, come on. I'm tired and I need sleep," Taking my hand he guided me up the stairs to my bedroom and right to the bed.
Drawing the blinds closed, he pulls his shirt over his head and drops his jeans to the floor as he toes off his shoes. I'm frozen in place watching him strip down and can't move. It's not like I've never seen Devin before. I see him swim in the pool all the time but this is different.
"Are you just gonna stand there or are you gonna get in?" Devin asks as he crawls into my bed. "Come on, Kenna. I'm beat and I'm not going to sleep without you with me."
My mouth is dry and I can't find my voice so I just nod. Slipping into the bed next to him, I turn my back to him and hope to figure out what just happened to me. I've never felt awkward around Devin before, why do I suddenly feel weird?
Closing my eyes, I try to go to sleep but I feel Devin roll over. His arm slides around my waist and pulls me back against him. His face nuzzles into my neck and his warm breath tickles my ear. I feel the heat from his skin, the hard muscles that are wrapped around me, and something just as hard, pressing right against my butt.
Oh shit!
"Go to sleep, baby." Devin mutters in my ear and kisses my neck, sending goosebumps all over my body. Not the creepy kind but the kind that makes me want more.
What does that mean?
