Chapter 23: The Retaliation Begins
The sun was setting over Manhattan, casting a golden glow across the skyscrapers that framed the bustling city below. From his penthouse suite, Alexander stood by the window, watching as the city slowly transitioned from day to night. His phone buzzed on the desk behind him, drawing his attention. He picked it up, his expression hardening as he listened to Julian’s voice on the other end.
“It’s done, sir,” Julian said, his voice steady. “We’ve located two of the people assisting Emma. The message has been delivered.”
A twisted smile curled on Alexander’s lips. “Good,” he replied, his voice cold. “And what of Emma and Claire?”
“They’re still moving, but they won’t be able to hide for long. We’ve cut off some of their resources and intimidated their contacts. They’ll start feeling the pressure soon enough.”
Alexander turned, his eyes narrowing as he stared at the sleek, polished surface of his desk. He could almost see their faces—Emma and Claire, looking over their shoulders, realizing that they were not as safe as they had hoped. It was time they understood the consequences of challenging him.
“Keep the pressure on,” Alexander said. “Make sure that anyone who even thinks of helping them knows the cost.”
Julian hesitated for a moment, his voice lowering. “Sir, there’s something else. One of our warehouses was raided—seems like Emma’s little stunt has inspired others. The authorities have started paying closer attention.”
Alexander clenched his jaw, his hand tightening around the phone. He knew that once a crack appeared in his empire, others would see it as an opportunity. He had to act quickly, decisively. “Increase security,” he ordered. “And leak misinformation. If they think they’re hitting real targets, we’ll lead them to empty shells.”
“Yes, sir. I’ll take care of it,” Julian said.
Alexander ended the call, his mind racing. He wouldn’t let Emma and her allies gain any more ground. He walked over to his desk, his fingers brushing against a framed photograph—one from years ago, when he had first started building his empire. He remembered the sacrifices he had made, the power he had amassed, and the control he had worked so hard to maintain.
He wasn’t about to lose it all because of one woman’s misplaced sense of justice.
Chapter 24: A Warning Too Close
Emma was sitting in the back of the van, her eyes glued to the map on her phone. They had been on the move for hours, trying to stay one step ahead of Alexander’s men. Claire was in the driver’s seat, her knuckles white as she gripped the wheel, her eyes darting nervously to the rearview mirror.
The tension in the air was palpable. They had narrowly escaped an ambush at the safehouse earlier that day, and Emma knew it was only a matter of time before Alexander found them again. He was relentless, and his reach seemed to extend to every corner of the city.
The phone in Emma’s hand buzzed, and she looked down to see a message from Marcus. Her stomach clenched as she read the words, her heart sinking.
“They got Steven and Julia. They’re sending a message. Be careful.”
Emma’s breath caught in her throat, her mind reeling. Steven and Julia had been among their closest allies, people who had risked everything to help them gather information on Alexander. And now they had paid the price.
She looked up, her eyes meeting Claire’s. “It’s Steven and Julia,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “Alexander’s men got to them.”
Claire’s face paled, her eyes widening with fear and anger. “Are they...?”
Emma shook her head. “I don’t know. Marcus didn’t say.” But they both knew what Alexander was capable of. He wasn’t just trying to find them—he was trying to break them, to scare them into submission.
Claire’s jaw tightened, her eyes narrowing as she stared at the road ahead. “We can’t let him do this,” she said, her voice trembling with emotion. “We can’t let him hurt anyone else because of us.”
Emma nodded, her mind racing. They had to find a way to fight back, to turn the tables on Alexander before more people got hurt. But how? He had resources they couldn’t match, power that seemed almost insurmountable. And yet, they couldn’t give up. Not now.
“We need to regroup,” Emma said, her voice steadying as she forced herself to focus. “We need to find Marcus and figure out our next move. If we’re going to bring Alexander down, we have to be smarter than him.”
Claire nodded, determination flickering in her eyes. “We’ll find a way. We have to.”
