The hospital kept me another day for evaluation but discharged me seeing as my wounds weren't fatal.
"Are you sure you're okay?" Britt asked quizzically.
"Yes. I'm fine," I swore. "I didn't have a nightmare last night."
"Yeah. For the first time in a while," Britt's face softened. "Okay. Fine. But call me if you need anything," she said.
"I will," I promised.
"Okay. See ya," she hugged me and dashed out of my kitchen with a bagel, smiling as she waved out of my front door. I waved one last time from the front door before I locked it.I decided to go take a shower. It was much needed. Just as I was enjoying the hot cascading water, the doorbell rang. It could be heard throughout the entire house and it was so sudden and loud, I almost slipped in the shower. "Dear god," I huffed. "I've got to get a grip." The doorbell rang again and I quickly finished my shower. I wrapped a towel around me, quickly sprinting to the front door.
When I opened the door, nothing but a cold breath of wind greeted me. I stepped out, my eyes prowling the street and nearby yards. "Weird," I went back inside. I locked the door again and went upstairs to find comfy pajamas. Then there was a loud rapturous knock that wouldn't stop while I fished for clothing. "What is it now?" I sighed.
But no one was at the door. "Must be kids," I convinced myself. "Leave me alone! Bother someone else," I said to no one in particular. Outside was empty so I headed back inside my home.
I had a fire craving for ice cream and murder so I settled against the couch with a tub of vanilla and watched Criminal Minds. At some point, someone decided to disrupt my peace again. "I swear I'll call the police!" I threatened from inside, my hand grazing the knob. "Go away!" I opened the door and there was a neatly decorated package on my porch. I still didn't see anyone as my eyes wandered near and far for a suspect. I sighed, "I wonder what could you be?" I said to myself as I headed back inside.
I immediately opened it, my breath stiff as I opened the package. "Ah," my jaw dropped seeing the gorgeously fashionable navy blue button down jacket.
It was beautiful! I tried it on, it's warmth enveloping me. I twirled in it, my giggles escaping me as the coat spun. "I love it." I felt something poking from the inside. "So many pockets," I got overwhelmed seeing so many hidden slots inside. "What's this?" There was an engraving of a heart in the front left pocket but that wasn't all! There was a white foldable card with the letter J on the front etched in black and inside, there were just a few words from Jake that read, To my love.I quickly dialed his number only to reach his voicemail. I left a lengthy message, hoping he'd return my call soon.
I neatly folded the coat and tucked it back in its packaging. I sat the coat on the table and returned to my television. My eyes were starting to get heavy and I snuggled deeper into the blanket as I attempted to blink away the sleepiness. Yawnnnn.
I was somewhat parched and reached out to find nothing to drink. I went to the kitchen for a glass of water. I stood at the kitchen window, drinking my glass of water by the faucet.
And that's when I saw it.. a dark shadow gliding through my house in the reflection of the window. The glass slipped from my hand, shattering across the floor. The water went every which way and with the pieces of glass landing so close to my feet, I was lucky a shard didn't stab me as I quickly turned around to try and catch this ghost with my eyes.
I was scared to move. Rooted to one spot with my feet soaked in a spill, threatened by glass. Scared I'd miss something. So, I waited. And waited. Quietly, patiently and so still.
But it didn't happen anymore. Maybe my mind was playing tricks on me. I cleaned the spill of water and glass. I fled to the bathroom, dousing my face with water. When I looked at myself in the mirror, I could only see that I was tired; the red eyes and the dark bags under my eyes were more than enough proof. I opened the mirror, my eyes searching my medicine cabinet. My hand hovered over a bottle of sleeping pills and I said what the hell. I chugged one and went downstairs to find the door cracked slightly open. I opened it and again, no one was outside waiting for me.
I stepped back inside, my hand instinctively reaching for the lock. I thought nothing of it again, bored of the kids pranks. And now, since my house was quiet and the night was falling, I would finally get some sleep.
I snuggled into the blanket again, tuning into the television once more.
..
..
"Previously on Criminal Minds," I jumped up from my couch. I reached for the remote and shut the tv off. I skipped to the kitchen as just as I was about to reach the doorway, I stopped in my tracks. The static from the tv could be heard as it cut back on. I pivoted ever so slowly as I heard a familiar menacing whistle that seemed to come from the tv. Again, whisssstle.
"No," I began to pinch myself so hard until my skin turned purple. "Wake up, Chris. Wake up," I slapped myself.
Whistle, whistle. "My darling, people say that you've been away."
I have to hurry. His song grew louder, echoing throughout the house as if there were tvs surrounding the entire house. I spied the faucet and twisted the knobs frantically. Nothing came out. Not even a spout. "Fuck!" I cursed.
"And I agree.
Way too long. That's why I sing this song.
I've come to claim what's rightfully mine."I guessed he wanted some control over my dreams especially since the last nightmare. Back to it. Think! Think! I dashed upstairs.
"So darling run! You can't hide! Haha.
You're running out of time." Whistleeeeeeeee. I heard a pair of heavy footsteps plant themselves firmly on the ground. From the top of the stairs, I saw the maniac crawling out of the tv. His hood was up and his scythe came out first. When his feet were firmly on the ground, his cold dead eyes locked into mine.
He grinned and I felt the cold sweat beads drip from my skin, the fear choking me alive as I watched him torture me with his first steps. "Stay away from me!" I screamed."Oh darling I can't," his raspy voice made me jump. "You're mine."
"Screw you!" I yelled.
"Tut. Tut," he smacked his tongue. "I really wouldn't make me angry.""Yeah?" I felt bold. "Why's that? Going to kill me?" I taunted unabashedly.
"I was going to do that anyway," the grin fell from his face and he moved like lightning up the stairs."Yeah. Well not if I can do it first," I stuck my tongue out as I climbed the rail.
"No," he said desperately.
But it was too late. I was falling. And I was falling quickly with a smile on my face. The gale in my hair and my legs fluttered in the air. Thud! I hit the ground.
