"Then we fight."

The magic surged within Liora, pulsating like a living entity, and yet it felt increasingly difficult to control. Each wave of energy left her feeling more drained, her limbs heavy as exhaustion seeped into her bones. She glanced around, her heart sinking as she realized there were too many invaders closing in, their relentless numbers overwhelming. Rowen fought valiantly beside her, but she could see the fatigue etching itself into his features, the strain evident in the way his brow furrowed with concentration.
"Rowen, we need to go back!" Liora shouted, her voice cutting through the cacophony of battle as she struck down another opponent, vines spiraling from the ground to ensnare a small group of men. The roots twisted and coiled around their legs, rendering them immobile as they struggled against the binding foliage. Liora's heart raced-not just from the thrill of battle, but from the fear that they were running out of time.
Rowen's gaze met hers, and in that brief moment, she saw understanding mirrored in his eyes. "Let's go," he responded, his voice firm as he swiftly took her hand, his grip reassuring yet urgent. He pulled her back into the dense embrace of the forest, away from the chaos and danger.
As they moved, the thick smoke billowed around them, swallowing the sounds of battle. Liora felt a flicker of panic rise in her chest, but she pushed it down, concentrating on the magic that flowed within her. With a swift motion, she summoned the bubble of protection once more, encasing them in a shimmering sphere that allowed them to breathe easy amidst the cloying smoke.
"Keep close," Rowen urged, his voice steady despite the chaos swirling around them. They maneuvered through the underbrush, Liora's heart pounding not just from fear, but also from the closeness of Rowen's presence. The adrenaline coursing through her made her acutely aware of every brush of his hand against hers, every shared glance as they navigated the forest together.
With the forest canopy overhead, Liora felt a sense of security begin to wash over her, though the shadows of the invaders still loomed large in her mind. They needed to regroup, to warn the castle of the imminent threat. But the forest felt like a sanctuary, a momentary refuge away from the chaos.
"Can you hold the bubble a little longer?" Rowen asked, glancing back toward the thickening smoke. "We need to get deeper into the trees before we can stop."
"Yes," Liora breathed, channeling her remaining energy into maintaining the protective shield. She could feel the magic swirling around her, echoing her determination. The forest whispered around them, the leaves rustling as if urging them onward, away from the danger that lurked just beyond.
Together, they pushed deeper into the shadows of the trees, hearts racing, breaths coming in quick bursts. As they ran, Liora couldn't shake the feeling that they were being hunted, shadows slipping through the smoke like wraiths. Each step felt heavier, yet with Rowen beside her, she found strength in their shared resolve.
Finally, they reached a small clearing, a patch of moonlight breaking through the branches above. Rowen slowed, turning to face her, his expression serious. "We can't keep running forever. We need a plan."
Liora nodded, her mind racing as she caught her breath. "We need to tell my father. We need more guards, and we need to find Gareth." She could see the determination in Rowen's eyes, mirroring her own.
Just then, the sound of rustling leaves pulled their attention. The shadows flickered, and Liora's heart sank. The invaders were closer than she had hoped. She tightened her grip on Rowen's hand, her mind racing for a solution. They couldn't be cornered here-not now.
"Rowen," she whispered urgently, "we have to make a stand."
Rowen nodded, his shoulder pressing into hers as he released her hand, drawing his sword once more. The blade glinted under the sparse moonlight, a stark contrast to the encroaching darkness surrounding them. Liora's heart raced as she felt the weight of the situation settle over them like a thick fog.
"Stay close," Rowen murmured, his voice a steady anchor in the chaos. With his sword raised, he stood ready to defend her, a warrior prepared to face whatever danger lurked beyond the shadows.
Liora took a deep breath, closing her eyes to block out the panic creeping in. She needed to focus, to harness the magic within her. As she concentrated, the world around her faded into a swirl of muted sounds and sensations. She could feel the earth beneath her, its heartbeat echoing in time with her own. With every pulse, she became more attuned to the movements around them, sensing the weight of approaching footsteps and the rustle of fabric brushing against skin.
"Rowen, we're surrounded," she whispered, the words barely escaping her lips. The realization sent a shiver down her spine, but she steeled herself, her resolve hardening. They were in this together, and she wouldn't let fear dictate their actions.
"Then we fight," he replied, determination etched into his features. The glow of the sword illuminated the space between them, casting a warm light that flickered against the cold shadows closing in.
Drawing from the earth's energy, Liora opened her eyes, her gaze sharp and focused. She could feel the tension in the air, a thick electric charge that heightened her senses. As she lifted her arms, the ground responded to her call, tremors rippling beneath her feet. With a powerful thrust, she commanded the earth to rise, sending a cascade of jagged stones and hardened roots spiraling upward, creating a barrier around them.
The invaders hesitated for a moment, taken aback by the sudden eruption of the earth. Rowen seized the opportunity, springing forward with a fierce battle cry, his sword flashing through the air. Liora's heart surged with adrenaline as she reinforced their defenses, summoning vines and thorns to ensnare their attackers.
"Now, Liora!" Rowen shouted as he engaged with the nearest invader, his movements swift and practiced. "We need to create an opening!"
With a determined nod, Liora focused all her energy, feeling the magic flow through her veins. She thrust her arms forward, sending a shockwave of energy rippling through the ground. The earth heaved, creating fissures that erupted around them, startling the assailants and causing them to stumble.

However, the invaders regained their balance quickly, and before Liora could muster another shockwave, a strong grip seized her from behind. A scream escaped her lips, cutting through the chaos like a knife.
"Liora!" Rowen shouted, his head snapping in her direction, but before he could react, a pair of arms grasped him roughly, forcing his arms behind his back. The clatter of metal echoed as his sword was wrested from his grasp, the glint of steel disappearing into the hands of one of their captors.
Liora was dragged into the woods, the smoke consuming her, rowen was dragged after her. He could hear her struggling against the invaders, but he couldn't see her.
