The sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the city streets as Jax and Ava prepared for what felt like the biggest race of their lives. The adrenaline that had surged through them during the last encounter was now replaced by a heavy weight of anxiety. They knew this wasn’t just another race—it was a battle for everything they cared about.
“Do you really think we can trust him?” Jax asked, leaning against the hood of his Skyline. They were parked in a secluded area of the city, the quietness only broken by the distant hum of traffic.
Ava was pacing back and forth, her thoughts racing. “I don’t know if we can trust him, but we don’t have a choice. We need that flash drive. It’s our only lead to Leo.”
Jax rubbed the back of his neck, feeling the tension building. “What if this is all a setup? What if he’s playing us to get to you, Ava?”
She stopped, turning to face him, determination etched on her face. “I won’t let him use me as bait. This is my brother we’re talking about. I have to know what happened to him.”
Jax nodded, understanding the fire that drove her. They were in this together, and he wouldn’t let her face it alone. “Okay. But we need to come up with a plan. We can’t just walk into this race blind.”
“Agreed,” Ava said, her voice steady. “We should find out who else is racing and what we’re up against. If we know the competition, we can prepare ourselves.”
Just as Ava finished speaking, her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out, glancing at the screen. “It’s Mason,” she said, frowning. “He must have heard about the race.”
Jax watched as she answered the call, his stomach twisting with unease. Mason had been a loyal friend, but the stakes had risen, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that they were walking into a trap.
“Mason,” Ava said, her voice tense. “We’re in a bit of a situation.”
Jax could hear Mason’s voice on the other end, filled with urgency. “I heard what happened at the last race. Are you okay? What’s going on?”
“We’re fine, but we need your help,” Ava replied. “We’re racing tomorrow night, and it’s not just us. There’s a whole team involved. We need to know what we’re up against.”
“I’m on it,” Mason said. “I’ll find out who’s racing and get back to you. Just stay safe. Don’t let your guard down.”
After hanging up, Ava turned to Jax, her expression serious. “Mason’s going to gather intel. He knows the underground scene better than anyone. If there’s a chance we can get an edge, he’ll find it.”
“Good,” Jax said, feeling a glimmer of hope. “The more we know, the better. But we need to prepare for anything.”
They spent the rest of the evening strategizing, going over every possible scenario that could unfold during the race. Jax helped Ava fine-tune her Mustang, ensuring it was in peak condition. As the clock ticked closer to midnight, the reality of what lay ahead weighed heavily on their shoulders.
Hours later, they found themselves standing in front of their cars, the city skyline twinkling behind them like a million watchful eyes. “Are you ready?” Jax asked, glancing at Ava.
She took a deep breath, steeling herself. “As ready as I’ll ever be. This is for Leo, and for us.”
Jax nodded, admiration swelling in his chest. He had never seen anyone fight so fiercely for their family. “We’ll get through this. Together.”
The next day arrived with a sense of foreboding. Jax and Ava met up with Mason at a nearby diner, the familiar smell of coffee and fried food doing little to settle their nerves. Mason slid into the booth across from them, a serious expression on his face.
“I’ve got some intel,” he said, glancing around to ensure they were alone. “The race tomorrow night isn’t just about speed. It’s a gauntlet—a series of challenges that you have to complete before you even get to the final race.”
Ava’s brows furrowed. “What kind of challenges?”
Mason leaned in closer, his voice low. “They’ll throw everything they can at you: obstacle courses, timed challenges, even sabotage. It’s designed to weed out the weak. They’re testing not just your driving skills but your ability to handle pressure.”
“Great,” Jax muttered. “Just what we need—more ways to get killed.”
Mason shot him a look. “Stay focused, Jax. We can do this if we work together. The more prepared we are, the better chance we have.”
Ava’s eyes sparkled with determination. “What else do you know?”
Mason pulled out a piece of paper, laying it on the table. “These are the names of some of the other racers. Some of them are good, but others… they’re ruthless. They’ll do anything to win, including taking you out of the race.”
Jax studied the list, his heart sinking. “Looks like we’re up against some serious competition. We need to come up with a strategy for each of them.”
Mason nodded, his expression serious. “And we need to stick together. Watch each other’s backs. If one of us goes down, we all go down.”
As they discussed their strategy, Jax couldn’t shake the feeling that they were running out of time. The race was drawing closer, and with it, the looming threat of danger. He glanced at Ava, whose determination only seemed to grow stronger with each passing moment.
“Whatever happens tomorrow night, I want you to promise me one thing,” Jax said, his voice low and earnest.
Ava looked at him, curiosity flickering in her eyes. “What is it?”
“If things go south, you get out. You don’t take any unnecessary risks. You get out and find help.”
Ava’s expression hardened. “I’m not leaving you behind, Jax. We’re in this together.”
“I know,” he replied, a mix of frustration and admiration in his tone. “But I don’t want to lose you. You mean too much to me.”
She hesitated for a moment, and Jax could see the internal struggle on her face. “You mean a lot to me too, but this is about more than just us. It’s about finding Leo and taking down whoever is behind this.”
Jax reached out, taking her hand in his. “Then let’s make sure we both get through this. Together.”
---
As the sun began to set, they all returned to their cars, their hearts pounding with anticipation. The weight of what lay ahead pressed heavily on them, but they were ready. They would face whatever challenges came their way, and they would do it together.
“Let’s do this,” Jax said, glancing at Ava and Mason.
With one last look at each other, they revved their engines, the roar echoing in the quiet street as they set off toward the unknown. The city lights flickered around them, and the thrill of the upcoming race surged through Jax’s veins. They had each other’s backs, and together, they would fight for the truth.
