John had changed his mind.
Today was definitely not going to get any better. Not only did he not understand a damn thing in maths and was bored out of his mind, but as he walked down the corridor his brown eyes wandered over the students gossiping about him. Were they aware that John could hear them?
"Hey, isn't that the new boy?"
"Yeah, the one rumoured to be level 7.0."
"What?" John thought. "I haven't told anyone yet? When did they find out?" He ignored the whispers as they reached his ears.
"Do you think it's true?"
"I have no intention of testing it."
"Is Seraphina going to do anything about it?" John blinked slightly at the sentence he heard. He remembered the purple-haired girl sitting in front of him. If these lower and middle tiers knew John's level, then there was no way that the higher ranks didn't as well.
"All she can do is get stronger but I don't know, but why would someone who calls herself 'perfect' call herself 'perfect' if she can't be stronger than everyone else? I'm a bit disappointed, to be honest." John's eyes widened. He remembered all the gossip about him in New Bostin, the so-called 'disappointment' from people who had expectations of him, just like here. Why he could never be King. Why he was crushed by that 'responsibility' and why he finally snapped and hurt everyone.
Monster.
John ignored the voice and tried to clear his mind. So it's the same here.
Hierarchy and power.
You don't deserve any of the power you have now!
"SHUT. UP!" John didn't realise that he was clenching his teeth, clenching his jaw really hard. He only realised it when he heard someone mutter, "Oh no, did he hear us...?" He tch'd and left, ignoring everyone else.
Isen looked down the corridor. John reached the stairs at the end of the corridor and disappeared. Isen bit his lower lip and stepped forward, trying not to lose sight of him. Only when he turned left and reached the stairs did he realise that John was only one step below him and facing him. Isen was able to stop at the last moment, the distance between him and John was small, the danger in the boy's brown eyes seeping through, Isen's body screaming at his cells to run. Isen couldn't move because of fear.
John came up the stairs and stood in front of him with his hands in his pockets.
Isen swallowed and closed his eyes tightly. Please let me be remembered as a good person.
"Hey, you all right?" John asked and Isen opened his eyes. A look of concern appeared on John's face. "You've got a white face. You almost hit me. We don't want more than one ladder accident in one day, do we?" He smiled. Isen stared, blinking fast. His brain was trying to catch up with what had happened.
"I'm fine," he stammered.
'What's the rush?' John asked. His smile widened. "I'm not depriving you of your urgency, am I?"
'No, no, well...' The image of Arlo and the fork flashed through his mind and oddly he managed to pull himself together. He had to give John something to make him less suspicious. "They're serving triple chocolate cake tomorrow." He coughed into his fist and smiled confidently. Isen could have sworn he saw John drooling as he opened his eyes again. It was like the look on Isen's face when he saw an overly dramatic event and imagined his name on the front page and the story he'd already written.
"Thank you for the information,' John said. He held out his hand. 'I'm John, but I think you already know that."
"I assure you, I didn't know, I-I'm Isen."
