ACT TWO
chapter three

After shooting down JJ's idea of 'direct approach' with his gun, Pope sets in motion his demurer plan of 'tickling' the wire by planting his phone into the back of the pilot's car.

It's dark out once they've sorted their plan down to a T, the temperature having dropped, ready for the night they have ahead of them. Jo sinks further into her green sweatshirt, rubbing her bluing hands together with her knees curled up to her chest in the backseat of Kiara's dad's truck beside JJ.

"Hang on, why does Kie get to tickle?" JJ brings up with a short jut of his bottom lip, ignoring Jo wrinkling her nose at him.

"She's the best tickler." Pope responds like it's obvious.

"Should I do an accent?"

"Definitely disguise your voice."

"Disguise my voice how? Do you want me to talk like this?" She says in a piss-poor English accent. Jo snorts into the neckline of her sweatshirt.

"Not like that."

"No. Like Batman." Pope suggests.

"Batman." Kiara lowers her voice to a hoarse growl and Jo cringes into her shoulder, shaking her head while the boys nod along.

"There you go."

"Spot-on. Let's do it."

Kiara doesn't last longer than a simple 'Hello', before giving up on the voice disguise and getting straight to the point, "I know what happened on the tarmac."

The pilot laughs nervously from the other end of the line, "Um... Who's this?"

"It was Rafe Cameron. But you already knew that, and you lied about it."

"Okay." He gives up quickly, "Who is this?"

"We're gunna prove it." Kiara continues, unperturbed. "You could have saved her, Gavin, and you didn't. And you're not getting away with it."

"Listen to me!" Gavin shouts down the line, "Who is this?"

But Kiara cuts the call off, turning to the others, "How was that?"

"That was actually good." Jo speaks up, mildly impressed, and Kiara shoots her a smile.

"Yeah, I was scared." JJ adds.

"Alright. We tickled the wire. Phase two complete." Pope agrees. "Now we wait and listen."

It's not long before the pilot's reversing out of his driveway, the four Pogue's sinking low in their seats as he drives past. The moment he's far enough away for them not to seem suspicious, Kiara hurriedly puts the car in drive as Pope fumbles for his seatbelt and puts in his air pods to listen into his conversation.
