Her POV
Miss Brown made me sit next to the nerd. I hoped that we would be paired only for that day. She was handing out our math tests.
"Rylan!" she called out. "Congratulations. You've scored another full." She smiled and patted his back. He thanked her and went back to his seat, like it was nothing surprising.
"Bianca!" she called out. I walked up to her. She frowned at me while handing over my paper and said, "There is a lot of room for improvement." I ignored her and went back to my seat. It wasn't the first time I had failed a test.
After school, my parents asked me to talk to them. I was confused. We never usually sat down and talked.
"I got a call from your math teacher, Bianca. I'm utterly disappointed in you. You can't be living like this. You're in the 11th grade, and you must understand how important it is to score well in your high school," my mom lectured me.
"Mom, it's just a math test. It's not a big deal."
"Listen to your mother, Bianca. If you fail another test, we'll cut your pocket money. You understand that?" my dad said. I nodded my head and went to my room.
'How do they expect me to live without any pocket money?'
'Guess I'll have to put efforts into studying.'
(the next day)
I groaned when the teacher made me sit with the nerd again.
"Ma'am, how many more days do I need to put up with him?" I asked.
"Until your grades improve."
I looked at him. He was quiet, doing his own work. I didn't realize that I was staring at him for too long.
"I know I look good, but you should try hiding it," he said and closed my mouth.
"Want some gum?" I offered. He refused it and fixed his glasses.
'Typical nerd.'
'Is he a psycho or something? Who says no to gum?'
In the lunch break, I went to sit with my friends.
"Oh my god, I'd die to sit with Rylan!" one said. 'Oh, that's his name?' I thought.
"He's so hottt," another said.
"Guys, stop drooling over him. He's just a boy," I said.
"A very handsome boy," they corrected me. I scoffed and took a small glance at him. I saw him talking to his friends. That friend group had hot guys—the basketball player, the nerd, and the model. I didn't understand how the other two got friends with Rylan, considering how nerdy he was.
During physics class, I passed a note to Rylan. It read, 'I need your help.'
He raised his eyebrows, asking me what it was. I wrote, 'I don't understand any of this.' He nodded at me and mouthed, 'later'. At the end of the class, the teacher took a quiz.
"Why don't we start with...Bianca?" I groaned and got up. "Who stated the third law of thermodynamics?" I looked around, clueless. Rylan wrote the answer in his book and showed it to me.
"Walther Nernst," I said. The teacher looked surprised and made me sit down. I thanked Rylan quietly.
(after the last class)
As Rylan was leaving, I ran up to him. I saw his friends surrounding him. The basketball-friend of his winked at me. I blushed and asked Rylan if he could come aside.
"No, I didn't ask Andre yet-" he tried saying, but I cut him off.
"Nevermind, he just winked at me. I wanted to thank you, uh, for helping me," I said.
"My pleasure," he replied.
"Uhm, could you tutor me?" I asked. He thought over it for a few seconds.
"Yeah, alright," he said. He continued, "But I don't tutor for free."
"I could pay you," I offered.
"I don't need money. Let me think about it."
I groaned. "Seems like you won't pass 11th, then," he added.
"Okay, fine," I agreed.
