OCTOBER 4TH, 2024Yasmine woke up as usual, feeling dead inside. The weight of the day pressed down on her before it had even begun. She made her way to the bathroom, the routine offering no comfort as she went through the motions—brushing her teeth, washing her face with CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser, and Taking the time to fix her, short curly bob. It was the same space she and Charlie had been sharing for these last couple of months, but today it felt unusually cramped, as if even the room could sense her mood.
When she finally made her way downstairs, Charlie was sitting at the kitchen island, her focus on a cereal bowl and her phone. The kitchen was filled with morning light, but it didn't brighten Yasmine's mood.
"Morning," Yasmine mumbled, her voice barely above a whisper.
Charlie glanced up briefly, her face unreadable. "Morning," she replied, returning her gaze to the screen in front of her.
Yasmine started at her sister for a moment, wondering if Charlie noticed the invisible cloud hanging over her. But, like most mornings, they moved through their routines separately, even while occupying the same space.
After her brief interaction with Charlie, Yasmine climbed the stairs to her bedroom, a cozy space decorated in shades of green and black— her two favorite colors. She opened her closet, searching for an outfit for the day. With fall in the air, she opted for a sage green zip-up jacket, low waisted light jeans, and brown fur boots, completing the look with her brown Telfar bag.
Feeling confident, she took a couple of pictures to capture her outfit before gathering her things to leave the house. Today marked the beginning of a new chapter for her— starting at a real high school. After months of virtual learning since moving in with Charlie, her sister was eager for her to experience life with other kids and get what she called "the real high school experience."
With only fifteen minutes to spare for the drive to school, Yasmine planned to stop by Starbucks for a Cheese Danish and a strawberry açaí refresher before classes began.
After getting her breakfast, she arrived at Bakersfield High School, the place where she would spend the next few years. As she walked inside, she accidentally bumped into a tall boy— around 6'4", skinny, with light skin and a stylish tapered fade. She couldn't help but notice he was good-looking.
"I'm sorry," Yasmine said, slightly flustered.
"You cool, shawty," he replied, a charming smile gracing his lips as he looked her up and down beginning to walking away.
Suddenly, Yasmine remembered she needed help finding the office. "Um, excuse me. Can you help me find the office?" she called after him.
"Uh, yeah. Come on, it's just down the hallway,"he said, turning back with a friendly expression.
They walked together, arriving in front of the office doors. An easy silence fell between them as they exchanged glances. After a few moments, Yasmine broke the silence, saying, "Thank you for your help."
He paused, lost in thought for a moment before responding," No problem, ma. I'm Noah."
"Yasmine," she replied, feeling a spark of connection in their brief encounter.
