Lyle really did take Laurie to Cheesecake Factory. And she could not even complain. Laurie thought cheesecake in general was the shit.

"So uh...are you from here?" Lyle asked her awkwardly. She wanted to facepalm. They had seen each other naked, but he couldn't make simple conversation? Date questions?

"Yes, I am actually." She said, biting into her fried mac n cheese balls.

"Really? I came here from Florida, actually." He said, drinking his wine.

Laurie's eyebrows raised in interest.

"When did you move here?" She asked, trying to make small talk.

"About a year ago. I go to Princeton, so it doesn't really affect me a whole lot."

"Why'd you move?"

Lyle looked around in almost embarrassment it seemed. He appeared nervous and shy.

"Well, funny story actually," Laurie cocked her eyebrow, intrigued by this "funny story" Lyle had to tell.

"My brother and I got into some trouble..back in Miami," Lyle hesitated, before continuing. "We robbed people. And we apologized. And wrote them checks. And then our Dad moved us here."

Laurie nodded, drinking her wine in one big gulp.

Lyles mouth formed into a straight line.

"Honestly, that's not even half as bad as the shit I did when I was younger. Or even now." She said, finally excited to talk about something other than boring mundane daily stuff.

He smirked in amusement. "Really? Like what?"

She thought for a moment before answering.

"When I was 17 I hot-wired a car, wrecked it, totaled it and to top it all off the fucking car exploded." Lyle blinked at her.

"That's fake. You're lying." He said.

She gasped. "I am not! I will call my Mom right now." She said, offended by him saying her story was fake.

He laughed. "Don't do that—I'm just fucking with you."

Laurie felt her face flush red, but she let out a snort.

"Are you like, okay with your parents after that?" He asked her. She somberly shook her head.

"Since I'm an adult now, I can handle my own shit. I don't really talk to them a lot. That was kinda their breaking point—understandably so," Lyle listened, wishing his parents could let him go like that.

"But I was a bad kid. I'm a better adult—just wish I could take some stuff back."

Lyle nodded.

"I think we would've been friends as teenagers."

Laurie looked up at him, her blue eyes meeting in his chocolate brown eyes. She gave him a genuine smile.

"Maybe."

"My little brother, Erik, he'd love you."

Laurie's eyes lit up at that. "Really?"

"Yes, really."

Her smile turned downwards, in almost an embarrassing way. She had a weird feeling overcome her. Like a sense of pride.

"Can I meet him?" She sheepishly asked him.

Lyle nodded. "I'm sure he'd love that."

"I'd love that, too."

Lyle drove Laurie back to her apartment. She hesitated getting out, her hand hovering over the door handle. She looked back at him.

"Do you do this with a lot of girls?"

Immediately, Lyle shook his head no.

"I don't. It's not my thing. I do this to date someone."

Laurie's eyes lit up with excitement. "You want to date me?"

"Eventually, yes. A few more dates, and we will see, okay?" He spoke to her so soft, as to not hurt her feelings. It worked.

Laurie's feelings weren't hurt. If anything, her heart fluttered as her neared closer to her. Finally, he kissed her. His lips were soft, and so was the hand he had on her jaw. His thumb was making little strokes over her skin.

She pulled away, the tips of their noses still touching.

"Do you want your polo back?" She whispered.

"It's all yours, sweetheart."

The words made her feel like water in his hands. She smiled at him.

"I have to go." He whispered to her. She sadly nodded, before getting out. He leaned over the center console, barely sticking his head out of the window to see her.

She kissed him again, her thumb tracing over his cheek. When she pulled away he gave her a stupid grin.

"I already miss you."

She giggled, repeating his words.

"You already miss me."

Eventually, he did have to go. And she told him goodbye with a kiss on the cheek, before he watched her go inside, and her drove away, a smile on his face like never before.
